OBAMA CALLS BUFFETT

Wednesday March 11 - Sub-Rosa's senior investigating reporter, Ronald Davit, has obtained a discarded duplicate copy of the tape recording of part of President Obama's day in the oval office.
It appears that there are some omitted or deleted sections but we have pieced together these excerpts:

Hello, Warren, this is the President. How are things in Omaha?

Good. I want to thank you again for your help and advice during the campaign and the advice you have continued to offer. But I have to take issue with your view that I am taking on too many issues at one time and that I have to focus on the economy. Let me assure you .... oh, excuse me for a minute.

I'm back. That was Governor Sebelius and her chief of staff. They wanted clarification of one point in my health plan.

Tim Geitner and I are meeting later this afternoon to .... please hold, call coming in.

That was the Vice President, calling from Brussels. Joe needed approval of some draft language in NATO's letter to Putin. Tim and I are going to be discussing .....

(long silence)

Secretary Gates and Holbrook arrived early for their appointment. We had to make final decisions on some points in the new strategic plan for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Tim and I feel that some clarification .... just a minute....

Thanks for holding. That was Emanuel. He needed to know which members of Congress will require strong persuasion to support a lower tax benefit for some itemized deductions in order to help fund our health plan. We have hopes .....sorry ...

That was just a draft of my speech tomorrow on our education overhaul.

As I said , I am focusing like a laser on the banking and jobs crisis. In fact .... Oh, Michelle. Yes, I will be available soon to help the kids with their homework.   ....

And the Romanian delegation is here now?

Well, Warren, I know that you're very busy running Berkshire Hathaway so I won't keep you any longer. Thanks again for your help.

REPUBLICANS ADOPT NEW SLOGAN

REPUBLICANS ADOPT NEW SLOGAN

Rupert Tisdale, Chief of Slogans  for the Republican party announced today the formal adoption of the new rallying cry, "Failure is Our Option".  This new banner was inspired by the thoughtful and eloquent statements by the new leader of the party, Rush Limbaugh.

In Mr. Limbaughe's radio performances and speeches he has roused his audiences by repeating that he wants President Obama to fail. This may seem harsh, but not when you consider that, unless Obama fails, the Democratic party will prevail, giving us big government with liberal agendas.  True, the country and its economy will also fail, but this is a small price to pay. It is often necessary to tear down the old to build the new, in this case the return to traditional, conservative values.

Now, as soon as RNC chairman Michael Steele acknowledges that Rush Limbaugh is the head of the Republican party, and apologizes to Mr Limbaugh, ther will be a nationwide launch and media campaign "Failure is Our Option".

Professor Obama

Professor Obama

At the close of his bipartisan fiscal conference, President Obama held an unprecedented wrap-up
meeting with all of the attendees. Staged in a press conference format, the President offered his closing remarks and then proceeded to call upon a number of the Senators, starting with John McCain, and others present to express their thoughts on the topics covered.

Throughout, Mr.Obama, in good humor, acted as a combination of a college professor, conducting a class, and a high-powered CEO presiding over an important meeting. At all times, in tone and in substance, he was completely in charge and did himself and his country proud.

Forever Burris

FOREVER BURRIS

There are many calls for the resignation of Roland Burris, the Illinois Senator appointed by Governor Rod Blagojevich, after his arrest but before his impeachment.

But such a resignation is doubtful. Remember how persistent Burris was when practically everyone opposed his taking the seat in the Senate? He persisted and no one could find a legal way to stop him. So now the Democrats sorely need his vote in the coming months and would do well to keep him there until the 2010 election, which he will probably either skip or lose in the primary.

A new appointment now by the current Illinois Governor would be problematic. I won't comment on opinions that the next Senator there should be black, since when it comes to discussing race I am a coward.

NO DRAMA OBAMA

NO DRAMA OBAMA

President Obama, ever sensitive to the needs and wishes of the media and their audiences, has taken steps to avoid political boredom and inject some drama into his administration. It started with the sudden withdrawal of Bill Richardson as candidate for Secretary of Commerce. A pay-for-play problem. Then came Tim Geithner, who became Treasury Secretary despite failure to pay some income taxes when due. Meanwhile, the President was having cocktail and Super Bowl parties and otherwise courting Republicans to support a huge, controversial stimulus bill.

Further drama ensued when former Majority Leader Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for health secretary because of tax problems involving a limousine lifestyle. Then came the latest surprise when Judd Gregg, a prominent Republican, withdrew his nomination as secretary of Commerce, upsetting the Team of Rivals nature of the Obama cabinet.

The Gregg withdrawal was sudden and surprising. Mr. Gregg apparently just realized that his views were in conlict with those of the administration. What was it about the Democratic platform and Obama's speeches did he not understand? It seems that, as in Casablanca, he was "shocked, shocked" that there were Democratic policies going on in the White House.

GEITHNER SPEAKING TOUR

GEITHNER TO EMBARK ON SPEAKING TOUR

                                                  Groundswell of Support Expected

President Obama is sending Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner on a nationwide speaking tour to explain the bank bailout plan carefully crafted by Geithner and his team of experts. While there were some doubters, most who heard his initial speech on the Plan were impressed by the way he brought light and understanding to the immense detail that he had to present.

Just as the President has gone to the country to give the public confidence in his stimulus plan, Mr. Geithner will be seeking citizen support for his Plan. It has not yet been decided whether to adopt the town hall style used by the President or to make a series of riveting speeches that will raise the level of enthusiasm for the Plan.

In any event, it is expected that Secretary Geithner's tour will not only drum up additional grass roots support, but will also serve to entice private investors to join the government in acquiring some of the assets of the banks.

TO THE COTS

TO THE COTS

I've already noted that, in my opinion, the stimulus bill should have been written by the crack economics team in the White House and then forced through Congress. Now we have the House bill with too many easy targets for Republicans to attack and a compromise in the Senate that has let the Republicans water down the bill at the expense of the economic recovery.

Examples: cut in aid to states, a fast track economic help; too much in tax cuts, a weak economic help. And the total sum, already too small, has been reduced.

With Obama's bully pulpit eloquence, and with more spine in Congress, we should force the Republicans to demonstrate their intransigence and disregard for our economic distress. Vote for the best damn bill possible and make the Republicans do an actual filibuster.

CLOSING GITMO

CLOSING GITMO

It is like a breath of fresh air.  The new Obama administration has renounced torture, adopted real science, and ordered the closing of the prison at Guantanamo. The closing may take a year to complete.  A fair trial procedure must be established and a place must be found for those who can't be proved to deserve continued detention and for those who must continue in confinement.

Right away we hear protests from residents and politicians in areas where there are prisons  that are logical destinations.  "No terrorists""Not in our backyard" Here they are near prisons that house murderers, rapists, and street killers, complaining about a few foreign nationals with some connection to terrorist attacks.

And then there are nations that have refused to take back their citizens released from Guantanamo. With our new, more diplomatic and understanding foreign policy, perhaps we can now persuade them to change their minds.  A new coalition of the willing?

MADOFF'S FAREWELL SPEECH

MADOFF'S FAREWELL SPEECH

Sub Rosa's investigative reporter, Tracy Richards, has obtained a draft of what appears to be the final remarks of accused financier, Bernie Madoff, before being sentenced to prison (or fleeing to Brazil?). Mr. Madoff first states that he is sorry if he offended anyone or caused monetary loss. Other highlights of the draft:

Madoff claims that he has been unfairly criticized when his period of financial administration was really a success. Many investors enjoyed excellent results and, except for some disgruntled elites in Europe, his financial institution was widely respected throughout the world.

He understands that some people disagreed with his policies or actions, but that he had the ultimate responsibility and did not flinch from making the hard decisions.

His financial plan would have had continued success had it not been interrupted. He had taken bold action but had an exit strategy involving some unnamed sovereign funds. History will take a favorable view of his legace.

Madoff did concede some mistakes, which he called disappointments. One of these was his failure to send substantial relief funds for Katrina victims. He had been assured by the government that its response had been timely and quite sufficient.

What many did not understand and appreciate, Madoff maintained, was that, post 9-11, he had kept the country safe from incursions by Russian oligarchs and Nigerian financial schemes. In these times of globalization, his financial institution had kept our money in our homeland.

BURRIS THE PERSISTENT

BURRIS THE PERSISTENT

After trying unsuccessfully to sell the President-elect's Senate seat, accused Illinois Governor Rod Blogojevich gave it away by appointing an unblemished journeyman politician, Roland Burris. This was less a "clean" appointment action than an effort to embarrass those opposing the Governor. He succeeded.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democratic leaders said emphatically that any appointee of the Illinois Governor would be so tainted that the Senate would never accept him.
They underestimated Roland Burris. Mr. Burris showed up, was turned away, but then hung around claiming that he was the junior Senator from Illinois, holding press conferences, and picking up supporters and endorsements.

He wore Mr. Reid down. The grounds for rejection were really quite shaky. The Illinois governor was still in office, performing his other governing duties. Backtracking daily, Harry Reid was finally reduced to reliance on the fact that the Illinois Secretary of State had not signed the appointment certificate. A slender reed indeed.

Roland Burris will be accepted as Illinois Senator. Blago will smile. And Mr. Burris can add another "Burris the Trail Blazer" to his worshipful mausoleum.
