BURRIS AND THE SEAT

BURRIS AND THE SEAT

Did Roland Burris try to buy from former g0vernor Rod Blagojevich the Senate seat formerly held by President Obama? Many of the TV talking heads think so. I think not.

Chris Matthews and some pundits cite the FBI wiretap transcript of conversations with the brother of Blagojevich dealing with possible contributions and fund raising by Senator Burris. Burris has not helped his cause by his varying and confusing explanations of the phone conversations. However, he did make at least one good point, how ludicrous it is to think that a $1000 contribution could "buy" the seat.

My view is that the conversation was with the bounds of normal campaign discourse and not "pay to play". Burris could be expected to give support to the governor's campaign. The conversation was convoluted because of Burris' wish to get the Senate appointment.

But two main points. Burris had neither the political or financial clout to "buy" the seat. And, more important, Blagojevich made the appointment, not for any payoff, but as a way to thumb his nose at his critics.

Re: BURRIS AND THE SEAT

I agree completely.  The only thing Roland Burris is guilty of is poor public relations.  It's a shame;  I think he's probably a good guy.

Re: BURRIS AND THE SEAT

Kick Burris the curb.  ... And quick.

What a sham he is.

Re: BURRIS AND THE SEAT

I listened to the audio and agree with altara assessment. Burris may be an embarrassing excuse for a Senator, but the evidence on the tape does not support the charges alleged.

Re: BURRIS AND THE SEAT

Agreed.  It seems to me that Blago's brother was trying to extort money from Burris.  That being said, I can't wait to be rid of him in 2010.

What the tape DOES show

After listening to the tape, its plainly evident that Roland was eager for the appointment and was dancing around with Blago's brother trying to see if he could supply some kind of financial inducement.  Since he did not pony up, there is sufficient wiggle room for Roland to continue bleating his innocence.

However, his sworn depositions continue to change and contradict each other.

The Democrats needs to get rid of this clown and his gimongous ego before he does more serious damage to the party.

Re: It's up to

the Democrats in Illinois. Burris is Blago's screw up, and I'm sure they will replace him in due time.

The quid pro quo is very clear. Burris needs to

do the honorable thing and resign.
