Callaghan Challenges Capito on Foley/Republican Leadership

Cross-posted from dkos:

In WV-02, Democratic challenger Mike Callaghan has challenged Shelley Moore Capito to take a stand for Washington pages' families and against the sorry corrupt leadership of the Republican Party. He called for the resignation of Speaker Hastert. Callaghan, a former federal prosecutor, also wants more action to correct this gross negligence in the House. In a letter written today and addressed to Congresswoman Capito, Callaghan asked her and all members of the Page board to step down.

2006 and Terror suspect torture: a 2002 Homeland Sec. redux

Cross-posted from dkos:

It was going to happen, a Republican "agreement" from AP:

The White House and rebellious Senate Republicans announced agreement Thursday on rules for the interrogation and trial of suspects in the war on terror. President Bush urged Congress to put it into law before adjourning for the midterm elections.

Our Dem leadership in Congress doesn't know what disaster it is waiting in store if it does not come out strong and takes on Republicans on this move reminiscent of 2002 Homeland Security.

WV-02: Callaghan in traditional and strong Democratic district

Here's my post from DKos earlier today:

"West Virginia is, simply put, a Democratic State. It is proven time and again as the party continues to dominate both houses of the Legislature and most statewide offices. For the last, oh let's say, 10 years, political comemntators have looked at WV and its "social conservatism" and the last two presidential elections and have written it off as "trending Republican". It is the only thing that the seems to comfort the state Repbublican Party these days, as they put up "credible" challengers against Alan Mollohan and Robert Byrd. But the results from the last two presidential races and the state's characterization as social conservative are misleading in whether the Democrats have a chance to take back WV-02 with Mike Callaghan."

NRCC Polling Proving Credible Callaghan Challenge in WV-02

Subscription-only Roll Call article today cites recent NRCC polling for Shelley Moore Capito as evidence that "safe Republican seat" is not being taking for granted. It was unexpected for many insiders in Washington because Capito had won re-election easily the last two cycles. But what most people forget is that this year the Dems have a credible challenger in Mike Callaghan.

Here's the skinny from Roll Call on WV-02:

"The only somewhat surprising district on the list is that of Capito, who currently is not considered among the most vulnerable Members of the House.

Capito won re-election easily since a tough 2000 campaign. But while West Virginia has trended Republican in recent antional elections, the Democratic underpinnings of the state could create problems for the only Republican on the in the Congressional delegation this cycle. President Bush raised money for Capito last week."
