Chris Matthews: Limbaugh Will Let Hillary Clinton Win So He Can Be "Government In Exile"

[Republished from]

In an exchange with Howard Fineman and Michelle Bernard on today's Hardball, Chris Matthews suggested that Limbaugh would let Hillary Clinton win in order to become the government in exile:

Howard Fineman: McCain is relying on the idea that if he does get the nomination, the prospect of Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama will be enough to unite the conservatives.  I don't necessarily think that's the case.  Sometimes conservative activists get in a mood where they prefer to loose...

Chris Matthews: Right.

Fineman: ...They prefer to lose...

Matthews: Yes! Yes!

Fineman: ...They want to Lose.  They love to lose.

Matthews: I just think that's so true.  Michelle, I think these guys like Rush Limbaugh, who I think is a great professional at what he does, would love to be the government in exile, have a democrat like Hillary Clinton, especially Hillary Clinton as president.  And he would be in heaven for four years, putting her in hell.

Michelle Bernard: No one is going to unify the Republican party more than Hillary Clinton, you know.  Let's make that clear.  I've got to actually agree with...

Matthews: No, I mean let her win the presidency, so that guys on radio can dance for four years on her grave.  I mean, they'll just love it.

This is multidimensional nonsense.  It's pretty clear that for the safety of others, going forward, MSNBC should only allow Matthews to use NERF on Hardball.

For context, in the subsequent segment, Matthews reads a letter from former Speaker Tip O'Neil's daughter that praises Barack Obama and states that Tip would support Obama if he were alive.  Matthews goes on to talk about the cut of Obama's jib.

he's crazy to suggest that

Limbaugh wants the GOP to lose, but I don't think he would cry in his sleep if he had a Democratic president to rail against on his show. It would be very liberating to be able to trash the other party as opposed to trying and defend the worst president in modern US history.

Chris Matthews is crazy

anyone watching him and Bob Menendez? Just asked like 5 straight questions on whether Bob would switch his super delegate vote to Obama if he beat HRC in NJ.

Re: Chris Matthews: Limbaugh Will Let Hillary Clin

As much as I hate to agree with Matthews, I actually think he is not too far off on this point. Limbaugh admitted he was relieved when the Dems won Congress in 2006. With another four years of a Republican in office, Limbaugh will have to continue defending the administration in power. If Hillary or Obama win the general election, Limbaugh can take the offensive once again, which is where I think he would prefer to be.

Not to mention -- with either a woman or African American in the Oval Office, Limbaugh can reach out to his bigot demographic by making subtle racist and/or sexist comments for another four years.

...I meant to say "another eight years."

Re: Chris Matthews:

Truthfully, it's Chris Matthews who love to put her through hell, which he has been doing for months- he doesn't want her to win the nomination, though- but if she does- he will be the one dancing on her grave then dancing for 4 years on it if she is President.  If she does become President, I hope she and Bill refuse to go on any Chris Matthews or Tim Russert show and instruct the White House to give them no INFO on ANYTHING.
