Interesting Voting Patterns

It’s widely known that the Democratic Party rests upon a voting base of minorities – those who don’t completely fit within the American mainstream. After the Civil War, the states in the former Confederacy voted Democratic. When Catholics were discriminated against, they voted Democratic.

Today the most well-known Democratic minorities constitute blacks and Latinos. President Barack Obama’s coalition rested firmly upon these votes – a problem in mid-term elections, when these voters tend not to turn out.

There are, however, a lot of very Democratic minorities out there other than just blacks and Hispanics. Asians and Native Americans, for instance, vote Democratic. Immigrants have always tended to vote Democratic. Women also lean Democratic.

This can lead to quite interesting voting patterns.

For more than a generation (1932 to 1964), for instance, both blacks and segregationists voted Democratic. The Democratic Party’s tent was so wide it covered both Martin Luther King Jr. and George Wallace. At one time, Democratic politicians included both Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. – the first black congressman from New York – and Mississippi Senator James Eastland, who once said:

In every stage of the [Montgomery] bus boycott we have been oppressed and degraded because of black, slimy, juicy, unbearably stinking niggers…African flesh-eaters. When in the course of human events it becomes necessary to abolish the Negro race, proper methods should be used. Among these are guns, bows and arrows, slingshots and knives…All whites are created equal with certain rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of dead niggers.

And to think both men called themselves Democrats!

Today the Democratic Party still creates strange alliances. It brings together groups which absolutely despise each other.

Take Jews. They have always voted extremely Democratic based upon social issues and discrimination from the main-stream. 77% of Jews voted for Obama.

So do Arabs. They have been alienated by former President Bush’s policies regarding the Middle East. In 2008 Zogby projected Democrats to win 68% of the Arab vote (I suspect that estimate low-balls the actual results).

When Jews and Arabs are both overwhelmingly voting the same way, that’s ironic. That’s the Democratic Party today.

Days of Awe(kward)

First, the Family Research Councilheld its "Values Voters Summit" on Rosh HaShanah.  Maybe they figured it was a good way to avoid the embarrassment of having any Jews show up because they thought "Values" actually meant "values." Or more likely none of them knew or cared when Rosh HaShanah was.  That, or they were looking for a way to keep the liberal media away from their conference.

Now, Glenn Beck is calling for a day of "fast and prayer" on...Yom Kippur?  Are the right-wingers trying to win us back?

Wonder what the right-of-right-wingers are cooking up for Sukkot...

In unrelated news, Norman Podhoretz just spent a book puzzling over Why Are Jews Liberals?

Why Jews are liberals

Subtitle: Why Norman Podhoretz is wrong as usual.

Podhoretz began his political life on the Trotskyite left but swung sharply to the right and edited the conservative magazine Commentary for more than three decades. His latest book is called "Why Are Jews Liberals?", and he published a few thoughts on the subject in the Wall Street Journal this week.

All the other ethno-religious groups that, like the Jews, formed part of the coalition forged by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s have followed the rule that increasing prosperity generally leads to an increasing identification with the Republican Party. But not the Jews. As the late Jewish scholar Milton Himmelfarb said in the 1950s: "Jews earn like Episcopalians"--then the most prosperous minority group in America--"and vote like Puerto Ricans," who were then the poorest.

Jews also remain far more heavily committed to the liberal agenda than any of their old ethno-religious New Deal partners. As the eminent sociologist Nathan Glazer has put it, "whatever the promptings of their economic interests," Jews have consistently supported "increased government spending, expanded benefits to the poor and lower classes, greater regulations on business, and the power of organized labor."

As with these old political and economic questions, so with the newer issues being fought out in the culture wars today. On abortion, gay rights, school prayer, gun control and assisted suicide, the survey data show that Jews are by far the most liberal of any group in America.

After the jump I'll offer my thoughts about why many Jews are liberals and, equally important, why many Jews who are not liberals vote for Democrats anyway. Podhoretz is convinced that more American Jews should identify with political conservatives, but today's Republican Party makes that unlikely.

I think it okay to kill jews

MIDDLETOWN - Stephen P. Morgan wrote that he had a grudge against Jews and "beautiful,""smart" Wesleyan students -- but most of all, he had a grudge against Johanna Justin-Jinich, the 21-year-old Wesleyan University junior he is accused of gunning down in a cafe near campus on Wednesday.

"Kill Johanna," he scrawled in a notebook police found in his car. "She must Die."

On a page in the notebook dated May 6, the day of the shooting at the Red & Black Cafe at Broad Street Books, he wrote: "I think it OK to kill Jews, and go on a killing spree at this school."

Morgan was arraigned this morning in Superior Court in Middletown. A judge raised his bail to $15 million. The new revelations about Morgan were contained in the warrant for his arrest.

Morgan surrendered Thursday night to Meriden police after a manhunt that began shortly after Justin-Jinich was gunned down."

Gannett: Neo-NAZI Cards Not "Offensive," Say Police

Update III: Fond du Lac Police Captain Steve Thiry: "Obviously, people were offended," or we would not have investigated the incident. The Fond du Lac Reporter's lede gets knocked down, as do efforts to pooh-pooh the incident.

Update: SPLC Maps 12 Racist Groups in Wisconsin

I read with disappointment this morning's report in the Fond du Lac Reporter (Gannett Company) on the neo-NAZIs leaving their business cards on the car windows of several participants of a Hispanic-Latino event last week.

The "Aryan Wear" group's cards asks if the car-owners had "had enough diversity?"

The card is pictured at: ml.

The lede in the Reporter piece by Sharon Roznik reads: "Fond du Lac police said the content of anti-diversity cards left on the car windows of several participants of last Thursday's 'HOLA!' event is neither threatening, nor blatantly offensive racially."
