Salt Lake City Creates No Church Zone

Yesterday the Salt Lake City Council passed an ordinance banning the construction of any non-Mormon churches within 1 mile of Temple Square, the site of the Mormon Tabernacle. This was in response to a poll of city residents showing that 62% of responders oppose the proposed construction a branch of Rick Warren’s Southern Baptist Saddleback Church. The Mayor is expected to sign the new law tomorrow.

According to City Council spokesman Robert Smith, the Saddleback Church and Community Center would be only three blocks from the Tabernacle and might even be visible from parts of the Tabernacle. He stated that the Council in no way questions the right of churches, as a matter of religious freedom, to build wherever they wish but that they must comply with local zoning laws. The Council respects the 1st Amendment but church officials must have the wisdom not to build where it would offend the sensibilities of the residents.

SCOTT BROWN JOINS WASHINGTON THINK TANK

Roger Andrews, president of the influential think tank American Values Institute, announced yesterday that it had hired new Senator Scott Brown as a part time analyst and commentator.
The Senator will have an office at the Institute and access to its extensive research team.

Andrews conceded that this was a departure from the Institute's policy of separation from political officeholders. However, the Institutes Board was so impressed by Brown's body of work and instant prominence that an exception was warranted.

Mr. Andrews closed the conference with the statement that the Institute was looking forward to a long and productive relationship with Senator Brown.

Wembly apologized to those who have lost baggage or had bags shipped to the wrong city. He said that George was quite mature and intelligent and should have known the different cities of Portland and that Warsaw Poland was not the same as Warsaw Indiana. Wembly added that he was supervising closely and was surprised that George wAS able route bags to New Delhi just for fun.

ENSIGNS DONATE TO SANFORD PARAMOUR

ENSIGN PARENTS DONATE TO SANFORD PARAMOUR

Michael Ensign, father of embattled Senator John Ensign, disclosed today that he and his wife had made gifts to the mistress of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford. The gifts, in the form of travelers checks in $12,000 increments, had been mailed to Argentine reporter Maria Bellen Chapur and her family.

Mr. Ensign explained that the gifts were just part of the pattern of generosity that had earlier led them to offer gifts to videographer Rielle Hunter, whose affair with Senator John Edwards had engendered so much sympathy on their part.

While well known for its philanthropy, the Ensign family has apparently turned down the request from the city of Los Angeles to help pay for the extra security needed for the Michael Jackson memorial.

MADOFF'S FAREWELL SPEECH

MADOFF'S FAREWELL SPEECH

Sub Rosa's investigative reporter, Tracy Richards, has obtained a draft of what appears to be the final remarks of accused financier, Bernie Madoff, before being sentenced to prison (or fleeing to Brazil?). Mr. Madoff first states that he is sorry if he offended anyone or caused monetary loss. Other highlights of the draft:

Madoff claims that he has been unfairly criticized when his period of financial administration was really a success. Many investors enjoyed excellent results and, except for some disgruntled elites in Europe, his financial institution was widely respected throughout the world.

He understands that some people disagreed with his policies or actions, but that he had the ultimate responsibility and did not flinch from making the hard decisions.

His financial plan would have had continued success had it not been interrupted. He had taken bold action but had an exit strategy involving some unnamed sovereign funds. History will take a favorable view of his legace.

Madoff did concede some mistakes, which he called disappointments. One of these was his failure to send substantial relief funds for Katrina victims. He had been assured by the government that its response had been timely and quite sufficient.

What many did not understand and appreciate, Madoff maintained, was that, post 9-11, he had kept the country safe from incursions by Russian oligarchs and Nigerian financial schemes. In these times of globalization, his financial institution had kept our money in our homeland.
