NY-20, Gillibrand is 19 points down but....

Kirsten Gillibrand is hovering around 19 points below the Incumbent John Sweeney.  Some mentions in blogs would help, donating will help and emailing friends in New York about her campaign will really help!

If we can get rid of Sweeney this time around we'll be able to get rid of Bruno next time around.

It is time to take America back from the Rich Racist Power Hungry White Male's that are currently in power.  Oh and if you have friends that are registered in NY but are going to be abroad please send them this link.

Adwatch: Kirsten Gillibrand, NY-20 vs. Rep. John Sweeney

Here is the latest ad from Kirsten Gillibrand who is challenging 4 term Republican incumbent John Sweeney in NY-20.   I believe this is her 4th ad.  The first two were apparently designed just to raise name awareness.  They were feel good bio pieces and I wasn't happy with them.   She then moved to a more issue based ad that mentioned Iraq at the end.  Now she has this ad that focuses almost wholely on Iraq.

Here is a link to the ad (I apologize for not knowing how to link directly to YouTube in a diary).

My thoughts:

It opens with a clip of Bush saying we are making good progress in Iraq and then she follows by saying she disagrees with the president.   According to the first rule in the accountability memo this is very good.

She also talks about it being a "time for a change" and a "new direction in Iraq" which I believe are a good start.  What the ad doesn't do is:

Mention her opponent and his support for Bush.
Mention that she is a Democrat
Mention Republicans.

Its also interesting to note that Sweeney is one of the Abramoff crew and has ties to the Marianna Island debacle.  He also is being investigated in NY for using tax payer money to fund a lobbyist and freind ski weekend.  He's corrupt.  She isn't addressing that.   If i understand what happened in CA-50, then this probably is a good move.   However, I saw this ad that was used against Ralph Reed and I have to think this approach might work aside from the fact that the average voter doesn't know anything about the issue.

New Congressional Quarterly Ratings: Very Good News

Congressional Quarterly recently updated its 2006 Projections. Of the 18 contests with new ratings, sixteen have moved in our direction.  Both of the seats moving in the Republican direction are already Republican seats, so no change there.

Of the three Senate seats, Nevada (John Ensign-R) has moved to "Safe Republican," New Mexico (Jeff Bingaman-D) has moved to "Safe Democratic," and Rhode Island (Lincoln Chafee-R) is now a tossup.

In the House, only California-50 (Brian Bilbray-R) is moving toward the Republicans.  Arizona-08, Illinois-06, Minnesota-06, and Connecticut-04, all Republican seats, are now tossups.  Arizona-01, Illinois-10, and Nebraska-01 have entered the list, going from "Safe Republican" to "Republican Favored." Democratic seats in New York-27 and Oregon-05 have dropped off the list, becoming "Safe Democratic." Connecticut-05, Nevada-02, New York-20, Wisconsin-08, and Wyoming-At Large have all been upgraded to "Leans Republican."

Rep. Sweeney Soliciting Peculiar Donations

New York Republican John Sweeney -- yes that John Sweeney, the one who appeared to get lushed up among some of his college aged students back in April -- is soliciting support from some pretty interesting sources these days, including a strip club owner, reports The Hill's Under the Dome column.

Rep. John Sweeney (R-N.Y.) has proudly accepted a $1,000 contribution from a strip-club owner.

Salvatore DiCarlo, the owner of DiCarlo's Gentleman's Club in Colonie, N.Y., contributed the money to Sweeney's reelection campaign, according to Federal Election Committee campaign-finance reports.

"Congressman Sweeney accepts contributions from legitimate small-business owners," a campaign spokeswoman said.

Given the impressive fundraising of Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand, the fact that George W. Bush only narrowly carried the 20th district in 2000 and 2004, and the real possibility that both Eliot Spitzer and Hillary Clinton will win their statewide races in New York this fall with more than two-thirds of the vote, it's no wonder that Sweeney is going to town with a strip club owner.

And with the profusion of photos of Sweeney (perhaps) three sheets to the wind, news of accepting campaign contributions from the owner of a gentlemen's club who happens to be a longtime acquaintance will only serve to raise more questions in the minds of District 20 voters as to whether or not Sweeney has the gravitas necessary to serve in Congress.
