It is a disservice for the Media to claim that Mark Penn has been fired or has stepped down or that he will not be affiliated with the campaign. This is contradicted in Maggie Williams' statement which says "After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign. " From the following statement it is accurate for the Media to say he has been DEMOTED! Although many in the Media are trying to insinuate that he has been fired or has stepped down, this is a FABRICATION and Media has a right to inform Truth and not falsifications.
'"The president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, James Hoffa, said through an aide tonight that the change is of little significance, since Mr. Penn will continue to advise and poll for Mrs. Clinton's presidential bid. "Demotion doesn't answer General President Hoffa's concerns. Mark Penn is still on her payroll and Burson-Marsteller's payroll," a spokeswoman for Mr. Hoffa, Leigh Strope, said. "Title demotion doesn't indicate loss of influence."' "In a statement on Friday, Mr. Hoffa called for Mr. Penn's ouster. "Someone like Mark Penn should not be dictating strategy, and possibly legislation, for a Democratic candidate for president," the Teamster leader said."
Anyone with any Political smarts and savvy, should know that the Clintons are not REALLY getting rid of Penn and that this is just a smoke screen -- he is far too valuable to them and knows WAY too much for them to push him under the bus. He will still be pulling the strings behind that Wizard of Oz Curtin, as they say, polling and advising! This is just more double talk, double speak, misstate, misspeak and misspoke moment. Mark Penn should step down for Real!

Rumors of Mark Penn's demise have been greatly exaggerated. I am writing this diary to try to set the record straight.
Mark Penn did not resign. Mark Penn was not fired. In fact, this is just another bit of smoke and mirrors from the Clinton campaign. From TheNation:
CLINTON DROPS PENN, SORT OF... After months of criticism and allegations of conflicts of interest swirling around Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton's "chief strategist," the Clinton Campaign announced on Sunday that Penn is losing his title.

Music to my ears.
Mark Penn, the pollster and senior strategist for Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential bid, left the campaign Sunday after it was disclosed he met with representatives of the Colombian government to help promote a free trade agreement Clinton opposes.
"After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton Campaign," campaign manager Maggie Williams said in a statement released Sunday. "Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign."
Communications director Howard Wolfson and pollster Geoff Garin will craft strategy for the campaign going forward, Williams said. [...]
"Senator Clinton was disappointed that meetings with Colombians had occurred. She is a strong opponent of the trade deal," said a Clinton campaign officials speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not given authority to speak publicly. "Over the course of the weekend he recognized he needed to step aside as chief strategist."
Update [2008-4-6 19:47:47 by Todd Beeton]:It should be noted that Penn will still be doing work for the campaign, so perhaps this is just cosmetic, but anything at this point to put distance between him and the campaign is welcome, although months too late in my opinion.

HILLARY CLINTON'S CHIEF CAMPAIGN STRATEGIST, MARK PENN, IS STEPPING DOWN AMID CONTROVERSY OVER HIS ADVOCACY WORK ON BEHALF OF A TRADE DEAL CLINTON OPPOSED

I have supported Hillary Clinton for president for months, and I will support her until the last dog dies. However, I would be a lot happier if she would fire Mark Penn. According to TPM, the country of Clombia has fired him, after he admitted it was a mistake of judgment to meet with Colombian officials about a treaty Senator Clinton opposes. According Eric Kleefield,
"Apparently the Colombians did not take kindly to Penn calling the meeting "an error in judgment." From their statement: "The Colombian government considers this a lack of respect to Colombians, and finds this response unacceptable.""
It really is time for HRC to cut this guy loose, too. His lack of judgment has been brutal throughout the campaign. She has gotten as far as she has despite his pathetically bad strategy. Every time he has talked to reporters, he has said something stupid. When he went on tv and said, "no one is talking about cocaine use", he outraged people across the country.
