Al Gore's oratory electrifies Bali summitThursday, 13 December , 2007, 20:05
Bali: In a speech likely to go down in history as an oratorical milestone in the fight against global warming, Al Gore, former US vice-president and co-winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, electrified the December 3-14 UN conference on climate change on its penultimate evening on Thursday.
Clearly speaking from his heart, Gore exhorted the nearly 11,000 delegates from 187 countries gathered here for the summit to bypass the US government delegation that is threatening to derail the entire Bali roadmap to start global negotiations that will help fight global warming.
Pointing out that climate change was already here, that it was no longer a matter that would affect future generations but was affecting the present one, Gore quoted the famous lines from the Nazi era: "First they came for the Jews and I did not do anything; then they came for the gypsies and I did not do anything; then they came for the neighbours and I did not do anything; when they came for me there was nobody to do anything for me."
Al Gore is now our Ambassador to the world regarding the climate crisis. To me that far surpasses the temporary status of any president of the military industrial complex, especially one that dismissed this crisis for thirty years thus bringing us to this point.
I am truly hoping that Mr. Gore will also then be attendfing the UN summit in Bali this December as his imput in that process will do much to bring this world towards a more sustainable future with the GHG reductions we have no choice now but to commit to.
I would love to see him there as a Un Ambassador for the Global Environment to have the chance to lead the summit and to inspire world leaders on this crisis including our own, who better get with the program regarding this crisis now.
I also believe such a position would afford Mr. Gore the political influence he needs without all the beltway constrictions along with balancing the freedom he treasures to address this crisis the way he knows it must be addressed now. Therefore...
""Summary: After Iraq, we may be tempted to turn inward. That would be a mistake. The American moment is not over, but it must be seized anew. We must bring the war to a responsible end and then renew our leadership -- military, diplomatic, moral -- to confront new threats and capitalize on new opportunities. America cannot meet this century's challenges alone; the world cannot meet them without America.
Barack Obama is a Democratic Senator from Illinois and a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.""
Joe Conason brings up the possibility in Salon today that Karl Rove might have one more trick left in the bag that would return control of the Senate to the Republicans. Conason speculates that Bush might again offer the job of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to Sen. Joe Lieberman.
Conason mentions that when Bush allegedly offered the job to Lieberman previously he considered it for a week before he turned it down.
The United States, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau. Once again they have proved their unshakable loyalty to the Israeli occupation by voting against all of the six UN General Assembly resolutions regarding the "Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine".
Today marks the 45th anniversary of the first raising of the Morning Star - the national flag of West Papua - on December 1 1961. Prior to 1961, West Papua was a Dutch colony, but in 1952 the Netherlands recognised the West Papuans' right to self-determination in accordance with Article 73 of the United Nations Charter. Indonesia felt differently and claimed the territory for itself. However, it declined the Netherlands' invitation to stake its claim before the International Court of Law. A West Papuan government was set up in May 1961, tasked with the preparation of the country for full independence in 1971.

For those of you who desperately miss Seinfeld, and are not satisfied by the reruns, DVD releases or even racist rantings of Michael Richards, DON'T DESPAIR!
NBC has agreed to pick up the option on my new sitcom, BUSHFELD. Here's an excerpt from the pilot, called THE PITCH FOR WAR:
SCENE: THE OVAL OFFICE
CHENEY: I think I can sum up the Iraq War for you with one word: NOTHING.
BUSH: Nothing?
CHENEY: (Smiling) Nothing.
BUSH: What does that mean?
CHENEY: The war is about nothing.
COLIN POWELL: (To Cheney) Well, it's not about nothing.
CHENEY: (To Colin) No, it's about nothing.
POWELL: Well, maybe in philosophy. But, even nothing is something.
CONDOLEEZZA: What's the war's premise?
POWELL: Well, I would go to the U.N., and make a presentation about mobile biological labs and we would pretend there are threats of mushroom clouds, yellow cake and apocalypse.
CHENEY: Yeah, but nothing happens to trigger the war. You see, it's just like life. You know, you eat, you go shopping, you read. You eat, you read, you invade Iraq.
