Two years ago, former Secretary of State Cathy Cox earned the ire of many in the GLBT community when she released a statement expressing her disappointment in a Fulton County Superior Court judge's ruling striking down Georgia's gay marriage ban.
"I am disappointed that Georgia's constitutional amendment defining marriage as a sacred union of one man and one woman has been overturned, Cox said in a May 2006 statement. "I strongly support Attorney General Thurbert Baker's decision to appeal this ruling to the state Supreme Court. Should his efforts fail, I agree that the General Assembly should meet in special session to pass a new resolution that could be voted on in November."
Eventually, the Georgia Supreme Court upheld the state ban on same-sex unions but not before leading members of Georgia's GLBT community declared Cox, who was running for the Democratic Party's nomination for Governor, dead to them [Source: 5/18/2006 Atlanta Public Affairs blog "Cathy Cox Is Dead to Me"].
Cox went on to lose the Democratic gubernatorial nomination to Lt. Governor Mark Taylor and even had gay and lesbian supporters demanding she return contributions made by them to her campaign [Source: 12/29/2006 Southern Voice article "A roller-coaster year for gay Atlanta"].
Now there are some who wonder if Barack Obama may suffer a hemorrhage of GLBT support similar to what happened to Cathy Cox in 2006 should he tap former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn as his vice presidential nominee.
Not really a diary, just a news alert FYI. This is big folks. Cross your fingers...

A positive ruling in this venue could represent a seismic shift in the American political landscape. It won't be Lawrence v. Texas, but it will be pretty darn close.
There is an article on MSNBC that quotes Sen. Obama as saying that he would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
This MSNBC article is based upon an article from The Advocate.
I wonder what would happen should that be repealed.

It seems that Donna someone should commit me Brazile is starting to have a meltdown. Not since her vainglorious days as Al Gore's failed campaign manager has she been getting so much attention. And these days she uses that attention to weigh in on everything Democratic. Or so she thinks. The trouble is, that by weighing in on everything she is starting to let her biases show and giving everyone a glimpse at the ugly side of the person we all once had great respect for.
A few days ago someone at Hillary is 44 decided to publish the emails received back from Brazile to questions about her seeming Obama bias. To put it mildly, Brazile's comments were hardly what one would expect from a "party leader." In fact, some of the things she said were downright mean. Ben Smith over at Politico picked up on the story and further revealed the dark side of Donna Brazile.
Inside Donna Brazile's BlackBerry
Do you know how many undeclared supers are now just turned off by people like you? Do you understand you're hurting her and not promoting Hillary? Perhaps that explains why a candidate like Obama has raised $40 million in one month. You don't have to e-mail me again.
Below is an excerpt from and article on towleroad.com. You know there is a reason that hate spitting folks such as Kern, McClurkin, Meeks, Dobson, Perkins, etc., have the prominent positions they do. People, lots of people, agree with their every word and support their evil wholeheartedly.
Below is a piece from The Advocate online magazine. Despicable.
<AFA Warns Against Day of Silence </p>
The American Family Association is urging parents to keep their children home from school on April 25, the National Day of Silence. The Day of Silence, first organized in 1996, encourages students to remain voiceless for a day to represent the silence faced by LGBT people and their allies. Today, hundreds of schools across the country participate in the event.
"DOS leads the students to believe that every person who identifies as a homosexual, bisexual, or cross-dresser is a victim of ongoing, unrelenting harassment and hate," the AFA said in its mass e-mail. "Students are taught that homosexuality is a worthy lifestyle, homosexuality has few or no risks, and individuals are born homosexual and cannot change. Those who oppose such teaching are characterized as ignorant and hateful bigots."
The AFA is asking parents to inform their school that they will not allow their children to attend that day. They also want parents to explain to their children that "homosexual behavior is not an innate identity; it's a sinful, unnatural, and destructive behavior."
The Day of Silence is coordinated by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network. (The Advocate)>
I especially love that last bit about what parents should tell their children. When will this SHIT ever stop? Will I live long enough to see it?
A new poll, conducted by Hunter College, finds Hillary Clinton is the strong favorite among LGB voters. The poll, a first of it's kind "ever conducted by a university-based team of scholars with a nationally representative sample of lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGBs) Americans", shows Clinton with 63% of the vote, a full 41 points ahead of her closest rival. The poll was conducted with 768 respondents by from November 15th through November 26th, 2007.
Sen. Obama posted this defense of his inclusion of "ex-gay" gospel singer Donnie McClurkin at a campaign stop on The Bilerico Project. Read the rest here. My thoughts, after the jump.
The question of GLBT equality was placed on center stage by the appearance of Donnie McClurkin at one of my campaign events. McClurkin is a talented performer and a beloved figure among many African Americans and Christians around the country. At the same time, he espouses beliefs about homosexuality that I completely reject.Read the rest! The events of the last several weeks are not the occasion that I would have chosen to discuss America's divisions on gay rights and my own deep commitment to GLBT equality. Now that the issue is before us, however, I do not intend to run away from it. These events have provided an important opportunity for us to confront a difficult fact: There are good, decent, moral people in this country who do not yet embrace their gay brothers and sisters as full members of our shared community.
