Obama and the Experience Argument

[Update: It was pointed out to me that I called the diarist out by name. Sorry, forgot about that rule (although by linking the diary you can see the person's name anyhow, so it's all the same, no?)]

This diary is written in response to another diary wherein he or she insinuates that Barack Obama's lack of political experience disqualifies him, or at least underqualifies him, to be President of the United States. And so the diary proceeds to lambaste the media for not stating unequivocally that Barack Obama is not qualified to be President of the United States, and so forth and so on...

So given the premise that vast and extended experience in government is the sine qua non for a successful presidency, let's test this notion by examining the public sector experience of the presidents who are widely regarded as the most successful in our nation's history.

Fighting Smart - Why Clark had to Take the Hit

This was originally comment, but by the time I finished saying everything I felt needed saying (and by the time I'd reiterated it incessantly to make sure I was understood, as I neurotically tend to do), I realized I'd written a diary.

There's a lot of anger out there and frustration over Obama's apparent leap to the center. I've thought about writing about FISA, but the fact is what can be said has been. By the time I got up the confidence to write something, the lines were drawn and that was that.

Well I'm getting in on the ground floor of this Wesley Clark hullabaloo. Thanks in advance for reading. I'm a bit nervous but here it goes:

This is what we need to address

I am an intern for the Democratic Party in a swing state. Part of my duties today (besides making coffee of course!) was to answer incoming phone calls. Some people in this area decide to call the local Democratic Party to vent their anger and frustration regarding the primaries and their results. Many of them are angry Clinton supporters, though there are some Obama people who are very upset that she hasn't stepped out yet. I want to tell this community of a conversation that I had this morning with a Catholic woman who identified herself as a lifetime Democratic voter.

This caller is a Clinton supporter and she started the conversation by asking, "Why did our party make this mistake of nominating an inexperienced candidate with so much baggage from Chicago?" I of course provided the company line that the Democratic Party has not endorsed a candidate and that ultimately we are going to support whichever candidate is nominated.

She pressed further, "but even him?!" This is when I started to engage with her and try to push her towards the candidate that does appear to be our persumptive nominee. In regards to the lack of political experience, I told her that Barack Obama has been in elected office for more years before the presidency than George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and many former presidents, including Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Franklin Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson. What matters in this election is judgement, which can be achieved through the sheer number of years in government or the ability to appropriately see a problem and find its solution. In regards to Obama, we know that he wants to push for an end to the war in Iraq, economic reform, and greater health insurance benefits. For McCain, we know that he wants 100 years in Iraq, no substantial change to our nation's "markets," and reductions in a number of items that affect our nation's safety net. Who has the better judgement there to solve our problems?

"Were You Ever Even Vaguely An Obama Supporter?"

In response to a comment I made on another diary I was asked the question that is the title of this one.  I started to reply and then realized that this needs to be a diary of its own.

As a matter of fact, I was an enthusiastic Obama supporter for over two years.  His speech at the 2004 Democratic convention blew my spouse and me away.  I couldn't wait to vote for this man.  Here, I thought, is a true leader and we will see him lead us through the next four years.  I even told all my friends and family that this man should be the next President of the United States.

I was wrong.  Here is why.

Special Interests Tougher than 90 Minutes of Questions

Appearing on FOX 29 Good Morning Philadelphia, this morning, Hillary was asked about Senator Obama's complaints all day yesterday about the debate Wednesday night.

"Being asked questions in a debate is nothing like pressures you face in the Whitehouse."

Global Warming's State Size Chunk of a Problem & Hillary Support Reason #2

Each day the news of global warming and the climate change brings us updated information that shows a worsening trend.  The affects are happening faster and with more intensity.  This is something we must confront and deal with immediately, if not sooner (if only we COULD go back in time).

Yesterday [even] CNN reported that a size the state of Connecticut has just broken from the Antarctic shelf.

Bosnian Vet Accuses Hillary of Valor Theft

Posted today on the Pennsylvania Progressive:

Tammi's father commented on post.  These people are a picture of character, courage, patriotism and selflessness and paint a stark contrast to a certain nominee whose name I don't want to honor by sharing this space.

The whole thing makes me furious.  We are better people than some political lifers would have us believe.

Bosnian Vet Accuses Hillary of Valor Theft

A veteran of Bosnia who was at the event in Tuzla where Hillary Clinton falsely claimed to have landed under sniper fire is accusing the Senator of theft of valor.  As General Walter L. Stewart Jr. of the Pennsylvania National Guard said earlier today on a conference call, soldiers who actually have been in war zones and performed under fire deeply despise those who falsely claim such valor.  They feel this way because it attempts to cheapen or make less, their real and actual valor.

The General pointed out "this wasn't an emergency resupply mission to the Alamo.  If there had been any danger that mission wouldn't have landed."

Common sense tells us the First Lady and Chelsea would never have been put in harms way by our military.  Hillary's tale of bravery and valor, because it was false, is finding resentment among those who actually did serve and Tammi K. (nee Jann) Hertherington who was at Tuzla when Senator Clinton landed is one.  Here is her story.

Dear Sir,

I feel compelled to write to you in regards to Senator Clinton's remarks regarding her visit to Bosnia.

I was present at the base in question when the First Lady visited and am intimately familiar with the situation on the ground at the time. It strikes me as beyond misstatement or clarity of memory for Senator Clinton to suggest that this visit in any way compares with the reality of those of us serving in theater experienced or presented a threat to her or her daughter.

As a service person in the US Army, I was deployed to Bosnia immediately after the Peace Accord was signed and served there for eleven months in 1996. I was there at Tuzla Air base when the First Lady visited, and there was no sniper fire or anyone running under cover.  I saw both the First Lady and her daughter in our headquarters building (we called it the 'White House'). When I saw them in the lobby of our Headquarters neither her or her daughter had on the "Flak" vests which even we were required to wear at all times when not inside a building.

It was my fortune to be working in the Headquarter building as a Communications Specialist, and while I did go out to the ZOS (Zone of Separation) once and lived under "Full battle rattle" rules, I would never in any way compare my experience with those who daily risked their lives. That was the M.P.'s who went on daily missions trying to round up weapons and militant individuals who opposed the Peace Accord and the contract workers who aided the Multi-National forces in trying to rebuild the infrastructure (bridges, communication, water) that had been blown up. If, as I believe, it is improper for me to compare my involvement with those who took the bulk of the real risks it is even more improper for any visiting dignitary to compare their own for any reason, let alone for personal gain.

I am quite angry that what I and my fellow soldiers worked to achieve should be used as a playing card to build up a political nominee and tear down another.  This is not what those of us who actually risked our lives were working for, we were trying to maintain a Peace Keeping mission in a country that had  been ravaged by ethnic cleansing.  To trivialize the atrocities suffered by the real people I met in that country for political gain is beyond my ability to comprehend.  I met mothers who had lost their children and children who had lost their parents. The sheer leap of credibility that the First Lady would have brought her daughter into an active war zone is an insult to the people there who suffered more than real risk, they suffered real loss.

I did have contact with some of the general population on a daily basis. Many came to work for the Military in custodial capacities. Many carried all that they possessed in plastic bags every day. They brought their own food and cooked daily on little burner plates. I was constantly amazed at how upbeat and optimistic some of the people were in spite of things. It still is hard for me to think of Srebenica and all of the women who lost husbands, sons, and fathers because of religion and nationalistic fervor.

My father still works as a Civil Servant at WOMAK on Ft. Bragg, NC and a couple of years ago he met a Bosnian woman and her daughter, who had lived through the worst of it. They got to talking and found out that I had been over there and told him to tell me 'thank you' for what we had done. It still humbles me and chokes me up a little to know that even after all of these years there is appreciation for our past efforts.

I was simply a soldier doing my job in Bosnia and I believe in what we accomplished there.  I do not either want to make of my service more than it was nor to denigrate those who served with me and those who lived through more than any of us.  It seems to me that if I simply stand by while others "spin" their involvement for their own personal or political ambitions that I would be contributing to the slander of my fellows in arms and the people we were working to help in Bosnia, so I offer you my personal experience of the reality of the situation.

To verify my story I have included a copy of an commendation I received for service in the Bosnian theater during that period. It would be my honor to provide you more of my perspective if it would serve to deliver the truth to the American people.

Best Regards,

Tammi K  Hetherington (nee Jann)

Sniper Fire Over My Head During Early Morning Missions

My wife says that if something is too obscure, or too small, or TOO DANGEROUS in this home, her spouse should do it.

Take my early morning missions to get the operating refuse out to the meeting point, at the curb.  Sounds like nothing, like something a thousand guys do!  But I can tell you clearly of my memory of these ecologically-motivated endeavors, driven by my unselfish desire [this is about you!] to help the world in its most complex challenge, accomplished I can tell you, with sniper fire blazing over my head, sometimes with my small daughter huddled for protection at my side. [I first thought this was the backfiring of a neighborhood car, but have since concluded differently.] The strategy I have developed, and have taught my daughter, is what I call "evasive compression" (known in some quarters as "ducking").  It seems to have worked so far, despite the fact that the inhabitants of this neighborhood seem to believe that it is deadly important to prevent me from rendevousing weekly with my armed vehicle [Waste Management ordinance].

Don't know how long I can survive doing these dangerous military missions.  My only comfort is to know that someday they will qualify me for some higher national position. Because they give me a substantial background in affairs that affect the world. God knows that at least I will be prepared for anything at 3 A.M.!  I am ready!
