So, I've been thinking about posting this for a few days now...you know how the news on outgoing Gov. Spitzer broke on Monday? Well, in December 2004, I posted this on my blog.
Obviously, said post wasn't getting that many visits to my blog until this past week. Anyway, it's garnered roughly 40 comments or so...most of which are anti-Semitic in nature and I'm disturbed by the anti-Semitism directed at not just a Jewish governor but Jewish people, like myself, in general.
It was not fun reading some of these comments, which have led to two people being banned, including the one that commented that they were glad that Tom Lantos died. WTF?
From The NY Times:
Gov. Eliot Spitzer, reeling from revelations that he had been a client of a prostitution ring, will resign today, some of his staff members said they have been told.Mr. Spitzer is scheduled to speak today at 11:30 a.m. at his Manhattan office, and the resignation is to be effective Monday, aides to the governor said.
Lt. Gov. David A. Paterson would likely be sworn in to replace him at some point after that.
The Albany Project puts the whole thing pretty succinctly:
We just wasted the biggest electoral victory in the history of the state of New York. It's totally okay to begin throwing up right about now.
Gov. Spitzer is speaking now.
Update [2008-3-12 11:52:26 by Todd Beeton]:The remorse I feel will always be with me...
From those to whom much is given, much is expected...
I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me. To every New Yorker and to all those who believed in what I tried to stand for, I sincerely apologize...
I look at my time as governor with a sense of what might have been...
There is much more to be done and I can not allow my private failings to disrupt the people's work...
I am resigning from the office of governor. At Lt. Governor Patterson's request, the resignation will be effective Monday, March 17, a date that he believes will permit an orderly transition...
Democrats privately floated another option, telling The Associated Press that Spitzer was considering what was almost unthinkable immediately after Monday's bombshell apology: hanging on."If the public is fine, he'll stay," said a Democrat who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.
Sounds like a plan! C'mon Democrats and democrats, we have a democracy to defend: don't buckle under to the prudes!
Right now the people are being bullrushed by the media scandalmongers, and feel 'weird' to say they "don't get" why this should mean anulling the 2006 gubernatorial election. But if Spitzer waits this out a few weeks, like Bill Clinton did when the 'stained' dress evidence came out, the feeding frenzy will pass. The media will move on to another sex scandal, and average people will recover their common sense.
Eliot Spitzer is a man. And far be it from me to say that is a good thing. We actually don't know but assume he has behaved badly toward his wife. However, on the other hand, doing the wild thing with a prostitute doesn't screw over the people of New York. Right? So why is the media demanding his head? Is any real person doing so (excluding of course TV talking heads and politicians)??
Let's get real about this: the media is demanding that the results of the 2006 New York governor's election be revoked because Eliot Spitzer had sex with a prostitute. Just like they demanded that the 1996 presidential election results be revoked because Bill Clinton got a blow job from Monica Lewinsky.
While I was doing my usual blog surfing to catch up on what I missed over night, I came across a blog entry by Ezra Klein about Eliot Spitzer that struck me as warning for all those would be reformers out there, including Barack Obama.
...what we're seeing here is not the fall -- if indeed he does fall -- of a high-flying governor. It's the final tumble of a crushed reformer. Spitzer, for reasons both structural and personal, has been utterly humbled by Albany. The new capitalism he promised, the age of transparency he spoke of, the national ambitions he harbored -- all have broken before the obstacles he faced in the governor's mansion. When you think of the hype he was getting only a couple years ago, that's a rather remarkable fact. I don't care about the prostitution. But the capacity of the system to stand against those who would reform it, and who come into office with a broad mandate to do so, is really quite sobering.
I was watching FOX News and it is known that Spitzer is going to resign. Say Hello to GOV. DAVID PATERSON!
