GOP Posts Lowest Ever Favorable #s in NYT Poll

Watching "Morning Joe" on MSNBC this morning, which for whatever reason I do while here on the West Coast, I got to hear Pat Buchanan lament how bad things had gotten for the Democratic Party. Interesting. Let's go to the numbers. Here's the CBS News/New York Times (.pdf) poll out last night:

20. In general, is your opinion of the Republican party favorable or not favorable?

Favorable: 28 percent
Unfavorable: 58 percent

21. In general, is your opinion of the Democratic party favorable or not favorable?

Favorable: 57 percent
Unfavorable: 32 percent

In case this spread weren't telling enough, with the Democrats being viewed more favorably than the Republicans by over a 2-to-1 margin, consider this: As bad as the political environment has been for the Republicans over the past four years, it's only getting worse. That's right, worse. The GOP's 28 percent favorable rating is the lowest ever measured by The Times in 25 years of polling. Don't believe it? Check out the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll (.pdf), which also finds the Republicans at an all-time low.

Electoral politics is a zero-sum game. And while it may be the case that the situation isn't great for the Democrats -- and I'm not necessarily buying that premise -- what is clear is that the Republicans continue to slip to new lows within the electorate, which can't be bad for the Democrats.

Rankles has no life.... (none / 0)

He has spend the better part of the last 5+ years being a total pest, here and on Kos.

KOS finally found a way to totally ban any and all of his identities, so he just lurks here I think.

Why are we losing the message war then? (none / 0)

That is what I don't get?

Why are we not controlling the debate?  We are letting Newt, Rush, Cheney, and the rest drive it.   Obama is starting to see a drop in poll numbers and people starting to question his handling of the economy because of it.

Sometimes I think that Democrats in D.C. think that they are above the spin wars and the competition to win the news cycle.   We are ceding a lot of furtile ground to the Republicans if you ask me.

They voted not to fund the troops yesterday and I hear barely a wimper from our side attacking them for it.

by RichardFlatts on Thu Jun 18, 2009 at 08:58:44 AM EST

Primarily because the Republicans ALL speak (2.00 / 1)

with one voice, the talking points, which are magnified and amplified by the media.

And, as far as voting down the funding for the troops, this generation of pundits, the Wolf Blitzers of the MSM would NEVER question the Republicans devotion to the troops..THEY can get away with not voting on a military funding bill, because OBVIOUSLY it's for real reasons.

Had the democrats done it, the first question would be "Why do you hate the troops!"

Until this generation of MSM talking heads dies off, I expect no change there.

Obama is really the only focused spokesman we have, hell, half the DINOs in the Senate sounds like Republicans (which they are...)

Look at how they all folded like a house of cards on the Gitmo vote. Any wonder the polls dumped after that?

Health Care, well, the Demo Senators sound more like they are worried about Primera Blue Cross and Big Pharma (probably becuase their wives are all on the corporate boards) then the American people.

Obama won, so the Executive Branch moved left.

Congress, well, I think we have about 1/3 of the Democratic Senators more aligned with Ronald Reagan then Franklin Roosevelt.

But, what Obama needs now is, 3-6 months of economic recovery, and if he doesn't get it, THEN will think he is in trouble, forget the polls or the pundits.

All that's fine, yet it still seems that in spite of the unfavorable ratings of the Republicans, the Democratic congress and WH are willing to be held hostage at every step of the way by this shrinking and unpopular minority. Seriously what gives?

Bought and paid for whores, whose Wives are all over Big Pharma corporate boards...

Also, the Senate has an amazing lag, they are always a decade behind the poltical movement of the country, because of incumbancy and long terms.

A vast majority of these Senators have been forged in Reaganomics as the dominant political philosophy in America.

Hell, almost ALL of them sound like Ronnie, it's all about the sanctity of the Free Market, etc...

Bernie Sanders is about the ONLY Senator that sounds like the Democrats of my youth, and he is an independent!

Yet, I turn on CNN and what was Wolf Blitzer lead (none / 0)

Is Obama over?

They are ready to follow the lead of the talking points, when in fact, it's THEY, the MSM, that drives the conversation to this....

I only saw this information, about the low point of the Republicans, on MSNBC.

I wouldn't be surprised of CNN and certainly Faux was too busy celebrating the polls showing Obama's iniatives support waining.

I wouldn't make too much of this... Most republicans have an poor view of their own party... mostly 'cos they have no influence anymore and think that the uber-minority party should still find a way to "do something" to stop the Democrats...
