Since efforts to rebrand the GOP are going so well, the RNC will reportedly be moving on to rebranding the Democratic Party next:
A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the "Democrat Socialist Party."
First of all, is anyone who would be swayed by this still listening to Republicans? My guess is no, but I suppose I could be wrong. Secondly, it's proof that Republicans are pretty much out of slurs. Liberal isn't scary anymore, so socialist is up next. Trouble is, socialism isn't really that scary either these days... though I'm sure it'll whip up the base for a few days. If this doesn't work, will the next step be the Democratic Baby-Eating Party? Thirdly, and maybe it's just a quirk of Simon's writing, it's kinda funny that the RNC is planning to just up and rebrand the Democratic Party. Of course the RNC has that power- just ask your freedom fries.
It seems that this is the only resolution to be considered that would approach any sort of substance, and shockingly- Michael Steele (about whom an RNC member tellingly remarked "Who cares?") isn't a fan:
Steele wrote a memo last month opposing the resolution. Steele said that while he believes Democrats "are indeed marching America toward European-style socialism," he also said in a (rare) flash of insight that officially referring to them as the Democrat Socialist Party "will accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans."
Well no. It will make it easier to properly characterize Republicans. Transparency can really be nice sometimes. In the midst of the party's electoral collapse, a major economic crisis, a battle for the future of the party and the ideas that will shape a generation of conservative leadership, the RNC's flagship issue will be- name calling. Because ideas and leadership must be for socialists.
Winning hearts and minds, it's your present-day Republican Party.
