Markos Crushes Tom Tancredo on MSNBC

We're still waiting for the video to be clipped, but folks watching MSNBC earlier this hour saw what will undoubtedly be an instant Youtube classic: Markos hitting Tom Tancredo so hard in response to Tancredo's attacks on the Veterans Affairs department that Tancredo scampered off set. Here's what Markos had to say that set Tancredo into flight:

"Tom, I'm a veteran. I did not get a deferment because I was too depressed to fight in... Vietnam."

While I love a Tancredo owning (2.00 / 2)

as much as the next guy, his chickenhawkery isn't really germane to the debate.  I think a better response to the "OMG gummint beauracracy" point is "And you think insurance providers aren't bureaucratic?"

Can someone explain the details of Tancredo's defferal?  Is it believed he wasn't clinically depressed and paid a psychiatrist to say he was?  Unless there is some support for this theory I'm not sure I can get behind a member of Team Blue ridiculing a person for having a mental problem like depression at some point in their life.  I admit that either way it is presumptious of someone who has never served to think they can tell a vetran about military life and it should be called out but I'm not sure I can support Markos's insinuation without some reason to believe that Tancredo bought his way out of service.  If it is true however, good for Markos.  That kind of hypocrisy should be revealed and used to shame such a person to no end.  
I have no familiarity with Tancredo's past so I'd appreciate some opinions.

I agree.....I just dont think that Markos line of attack using that issue was acceptable. I know folks who have had mental illness and its not a pretty think. So without im having some proof that Tancredo(who is a terd) made it up....I think it was uncalled for. I am not much of a fan of Markos anyway. I dont subsribe to his left wing vitriol....

It's ad hominem and not germane to the topic but very enjoyable nonetheless.

The heart of the matter is that the VA provides the highest quality most cost efficient healthcare in the United States. It is a pity that no one is really talking about it.

Before you tie your panties in a knot and ask about Walter Reed, Walter Reed is run by the Department of Defense and is not affiliated with the VA. There is an accessibility problem at the VA because the Bush Administration tightened eligibility requirements.

The VA has the highest consumer satisfaction rating of any public or private health care system in the country. As per cost, the VA is treating patients at the same cost per patient even as healthcare inflation since then has been galloping at a double digit clip.

In 2006, Harvard's Kennedy School awarded the VA its innovation in government prize for  being "the model for what modern health care management and delivery should look like."

Sometimes I wonder if the VA has higher customer satisfaction because veterans, on the whole, are not as whiny as the rest of us.

Megan McArdle had a post on the VA yesterday in The Atlantic but I'd go back and read Phillip Longman's piece in the Washington Monthly. 2005, I think.

The VA has some structural advantages built-in. It treats patients over the course of their lives so it is geared toward preventive care. Prevention is a big part of the healthcare equation as any good progressive knows. Saves costs. Cheaper to prevent and catch earlier than treat.

The other thing that the VA did was electronic medical records. HUGE cost savings.

The VA, the best run healthcare system in the country and it's government run.

I agree it is an ad hominem attack, but I'm not entirely convinced it isn't germane to the discussion.

Little bigot Tommy Tancredo is asserting that Veterans are complaining about care at the (government run healthcare) at the VA, and that because Markos is unfamiliar with these veterans, Markos's point is invalid. If I recall correctly, Tancredo is actually himself committing a logical fallacy (petitio principii, or more commonly, Begging the question).

Markos's response is ad homenm, but it also completely cuts off Tancredo's begging of the question at the knees. If Markos is a veteran and Tancredo is not, then how can Tancredo tell Markos what veterans prefer?

Despite all this philosophy, a chickenhawk getting punched in the throat on natonal TV is always welcome.

I think about a recent debate in which Dan Choi was lectured about life in the military by some conservative who had never served. He had to stop her to remind her that he had military experience.

I think political debates work on many levels. There is the level of reason and relevancy, but also the unspoken emotonal debates going on that liberals often erroneously ignore.

Who is this guy to lecture Kos? Is he trustworthy? It may not be relevant to the specifics of the VA, but it is absolutely relevant to the unspoken debate that occurs all the time that actually influences people.

Proud to say I didn't watch the video.  It took me a very short time at DKos to realize what a piece of shit Markos is.  This is the same bare-faced bastard who made allegations of voter suppression against the Clintons and ridiculed McCain for not having perfectly straight, white teeth (they were knocked out in Vietnam, btw).

He's a complete waste of matter, he's our very own, walking, talking, self-aggrandizing Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh.  He's the unwiped anus of the Democratic party and progressiveness in general.  I've said it here, I'll say it anywhere to anybody in any forum, and I dare anyone to tell me I'm not correct.  

The evidence speaks for itself.

After his student deferments were exhausted, Tommy Tancredo was given a 1-Y deferment from serving in Vietnam. The reason he claimed was that he was treated for mental illness while in high school.

Apparently, it wasn't cured.

I watched it live and knew it would instantly be heralded on lefty sites.

Markos didn't crush Tancredo as much as Tancredo forfeited. You would think politicians and pundits would realize that a high profile walk off never accomplishes anything, other than make yourself look weak.

Markos no doubt had that dig in reserve in case the opportunity presented itself, knowing Tancredo's background. As others have commented, I'm uncomfortable with the hoopla because I've seen relatives treated for depression and psychological issues for 40+ years, including high functioning professionals who no one sensed had a problem.

Every once in a while, Markos deserves a smack to the jaw. He's got plenty of talent and moxie but there's a whiny instability there, and too much glee when members of the other party get in trouble. It comes across that he'd prefer to have Republicans fail than Democrats succeed. He's certainly more agile and effective in ripping the other side than boosting Democrats, like tonight when he pulled off the Tancredo dig with ease but then wobbled through the subsequent point -- a very valid one -- that Republicans can't afford to have government succeed because it destroys their argument. You could tell that even Olbermann though Kos' closer was weak because he cut the clip off at that point.

A realigning wake-up belt to the jaw every once in a while would do it. That would be about as subtle as his site.

Sympathetic draft boards (none / 0)

Were oddly more sympathetic in areas largely inhabited by middle class to upper middle class white people. Think a kid from  Compton, or East St. Louis or working class white neighborhoods in Brooklyn or the wrong side of the tracks in Brownsville could get a medical exemption simply by bringing a note from a family doctor?

Everyone old enough to remember understood the game, if your parents had money there was always some. college to accept you and keep your ass safe, when student deferments ran out draft boards accepted the equivalent of school notes from your parents: "Please excuse Tommy---". I don't know Tancredo's draft history, maybe he flunked his physical after an examination by a military psychiatrist, but from what I see he seems on the same level as Rush "Pilodinal Cyst" Limbaugh and Dick "Had other priorities" Cheney.

Though I think it could have been better handled (something like "I am a veteran, and have used VA services...and 70% of veterans approve of the care they get") I still enjoyed Tancredo throw a fit, take his ball, and go home.

I also believe that Markos probably had some inside information beyond pure conjecture (he's sort of hooked up with the shiz, I understand.)

I'm a veteran (none / 0)

But am not eligible for VA medical. And judging from Kos's dates of service he probably isn't either. The VA loosened eligibility rules this year or maybe last but most vets are not covered even now. Retirees get covered under Tri-Care, people with service related disabilities under VA. Veterans like me who never got shot at or who got shot at and got lucky are grateful that there is care for those who caught a bullet or otherwise got injured in the line of duty.

And at least we served, I spent some of the last years of the Cold War cruising off the coast of the then USSR. Got lucky.
