Allegations of Playing Politics with Public Safety Haunt Palin

There is already one investigation into allegations that Sarah Palin abused the powers of her office by putting undue pressure on Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire Palin's former brother-in-law. Now new allegations are arising that Palin injected politics into the firing of another key public safety official, as ABC News reports.

Gov. Sarah Palin is already facing ethical questions over her firing of the Alaska public safety commissioner, and now she faces questions over the firing of a longtime local police chief.

After taking over as Mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Palin fired the longtime local police chief. The former police chief, Irl Stambaugh says he was fired because he stepped on the toes of Palin's campaign contributors, including bar owners and the National Rifle Association.

The allegations from Stambaugh included that his move to combat drunk driving by moving last call from 5:00 AM to 2:00 AM was not well received by bar owners, and that his position on concealed weapons did not sit well with the NRA. While a judge ruled that it was Palin's prerogative to cashier city employees like the police chief for any reason, the optics of allegedly firing a police chief for trying to crack down on drunk drivers and concealed weapons -- particularly coming in the wake of allegations of the removal of another key public safety official because he would not fire the Governor's former brother-in-law -- are decidedly bad and raise some fundamental questions about Palin: What are her views on public safety? Does she believe that politics and familial grudges are more important than public safety? Or does she have some other explanation of why not one but two top public safety officials were fired under her watch?

If we could have one these scandals everyday up until the election, that would be wonderful.

Keep it coming.... (2.00 / 1)

I am pleasantly surprised that the MSM is digging into this so hard.

I wonder if it will cut through the Pundit Love Fest going on for Governor Palin at the moment.

Right now, if you didn't know any of this OR her hard right ideological views, you might think she is some female version of Teddy Roosevelt, straight from the Bull Moose Party.

Exactly.  Where has this press been for the last 8 years?   Did they finally rediscover what it means to be a journalist?   Did they finally just remember what it means to ask the hard questions?

Oh, and I have to say Poor Joe LIEberman.   He just isn't liked anywhere.

Playing politics with public safety?  Palin should have hired Michael "hell of a job" Brown when he became "available" three years ago.

As everyday passes by it becomes more and more clear that she was not properly vetted.  McCain would be stupid not to ask her to step down, rather than continue the daily discoveries that are harming the campaign and the GOP.

No way.

If McCain is seen in any way even THINKING about getting rid of her, he is toast amongst the Evangelicals.

No, he threw the Hail-Mary, no way to get the ball back....

IN all actuality, I think McCain chose her because she is anti abortion and has a pregnant unmarried teenage daughter who is going to 'keep the baby'.

It's a made for TV scenario designed to invigorate the fundie base.

Not to mention the fact that she did not vet her replacement for Monegan and then had to fire him 2 weeks later.

Sounds familiar...

Hopefully that position wasn't too important because they have gone a long while without an effective leader.

Last call at 5:00 AM? Sheesh. Some hard drinkers there in fundie town.

What we need is evidence that Wasila somehow became less safe. Otherwise, this is about a thin an allegation as one can make. But keep it coming.  What is lacking in substance can be made up in volume.

Re: Allegations of Playing Politics with Public Sa (none / 0)

Could it be that she was not in any way concerned with drunk driving and actually thought it was wrong for them to be curtailed? After all, Mr Palin has a record of DUI.  Perhaps it was an issue too close to 'home'.

Re: Allegations of Playing Politics with Public Sa (none / 0)

I don't know what the hour of last call has to do with drunk driving. What is the difference is you leave the bar at 5:00 AM or 2:00 AM? Either way you can be drunk.

Maybe with 24 hour daylight in certain times of the year, open to 5:00 AM makes more sense than it does in the lower 49 states.

She also reportedly tried to get fired state trooper who is also an ex-brother in law who got drunk on the job and drove drunk on duty, tasered her ten year old nephew, refused to comply with court custody orders, and threatened to kill her sister and father. The only problem is that no-one alleges that she asked anybody to fire the guy.

strategy question (none / 0)

I am also encouraged to see the media continuing to dig (I would especially like to know more about librarian-gate) and I hope that continues despite McCain's transparent attempt to cow the media with claims of bias and sexism.  But I have a genuine question about whether the rising tide of stories has an overall positive or negative impact.  On the positive side, maybe people see the growing cloud of stories and conclude,  even if they don't understand all of the allegations and can't really sift through them, that there is just too much uncertainty about Palin and too much doubt about McCain's judgment for picking her.  On the negative side, maybe people see the growing cloud of stories and start to glaze over and tune it all out, and conclude that the left is just throwing the kitchen sink at Palin to see what will stick.  In other words, is it better to hit her with a drip, drip, drip of the deadliest stuff (with the risk that McCain could define her in the meantime so she has some footing and can better weather each attack), or try to swamp her with a wave of good, bad and nonsense (with the risk that people will tune it all out as noise).

Can't we frame up a good narrative about her with a couple of really strong storylines, and paste in the new information as it emerges.  Forget her inexperience (total boomerang issue) and her family issues (who cares), and let's go right after her strengths and hear more about these Sarah Palins:

1.  Sarah Palin is a radical culture-war extremist, who was nearly run out of office for trying to fire a librarian who refused to ban books; who believes that the Iraq war is a crusade for God (4 more years!); who would outlaw abortions even in cases of rape; and who attended a convention for a fringe secessionist political party.

2.  Sarah Palin is a cynical politician who is corrupt (abused her office to further personal vendettas and lied about it until confronted with evidence) and opportunistic (supported Ted Stevens until it was politically expedient to disavow him; supported the bridge to nowhere until it was politically expedient to disavow it; supported earmarks until it was politically expedient to disavow them; and lied about all of these things in her first speech to the nation).

Palin's numbers (none / 0)

"Still, I find it staggering that two out of three women say Palin is unqualified to be president, and that more women say the choice of Palin makes them LESS likely to vote for McCain, while more men say it makes them MORE likely."--Jim Ledbetter, Slate.
