McCain Will Do the Network News, But Not a Debate?

Color me confused. John McCain is apparently so embroiled in negotiations that he can't participate in tomorrow night's debate, but he's not so busy that he can't appear on all three network news programs tonight?

John McCain will appear on all three network newscasts tonight, a top aide said.

McCain is at the White House meeting with President Bush, Barack Obama and congressional leaders now and will tape interviews with NBC, ABC and CBS after the West Wing session.

McCain also appeared in a taped interview last night with Katie Couric on CBS.

I have been watching some cable news this afternoon, and although a few (Debbie Wasserman Schultz comes to mind) have articulated that John McCain's "suspension" of his campaign is no suspension at all, that it is a purely political ploy that is not backed up in reality, there hasn't been a whole lot of talk about this. But with McCain clearly violating his sham "suspension" by going on all of the network news programs tonight, can anyone seriously give credence to his threats to unilaterally withdraw from the first presidential debate tomorrow night?

he's trying to stem the speculation that he's now a completely doddering old fool?  How strange, bet he brings his note cards with him.  This is getting surreal.

I would love to see Ms Schultz run for President (none / 0)

....

on the bailout side.

What would happen if the US Government just gave 1 million dollars to every person in the US, 300,000,000 of us, let us pay off mortgages buy new houses, spend like the rich folks do?

Instead of 700 billion payout?

Re: Bailout (none / 0)

Seriously, even, say, $15-20k for each household earning under $250k a year would float most people's mortgage payments for a year, or at least help them to pay mortgage plus food and gas bills.  For anyone without a mortgage, it's money to pay down debt, etc.

The thing is, the economy runs on a "Tinkerbell theory."  It exists so long as we believe in it.  There's value only if we all agree something has that value.  Just suggesting the idea of a bailout has prompted a partial market recovery.  It's a mind problem, not really an asset problem.  Some infusion of money somewhere is going to help with this mind problem.

Rather than buying worthless mortgages, why not help people pay them?  It actually accomplishes something better than the bailout would - the mortgages are real assets again, because people can pay them.  Stops the free fall, home prices could begin to rebound.  It's a better idea than saddling us all with a bunch of defaulting mortgages.

Re: McCain Will Do the Network News (none / 0)

What if we said, ok, lets just have the vice presidential candidates debate tomorrow, we can work this out ourselves.  We'd be making a "concession" or act of good will.  And Palin will die miserably in debate.  And when McCain flips out at the idea it will totally reveal him and Palin for what they are.

My Prediction (none / 0)

I predict that most of the House and Senate Republicans will miraculously decide to vote for the bailout, but they won't do it until Saturday or Sunday, AND, their change-of-heart will be attributed to McCain. Then, McCain and the Republicans will claim they are the ones who "saved" America from financial ruin. Theater!

Re: My Prediction (none / 0)

It seems to me that if McCain votes for this bailout he's got bigger problems than merely a bit of grandstanding.  The back-story to this whole issue is that the US public, rightly or wrongly, are apparently dead set against it, especially his 'base.'  The '08 Republicans are the recalcitrants in this agreement and with good reason, McCain faces the same challenges.  It is ironic that the Congressional Democrats are the ones who seem to understand the necessity of this package irrespective of electoral considerations and the awesome risk to our aspirations is that the Republicans will somehow succeed in tying this albatross around our necks, which is central to McCain's current strategy.

Tough choices all 'round, not least of which for Obama's staff who have to negotiate a difficult path between good governance and economic prudence on the one hand and not having the million-pound shithammer of public outrage fall squarely on their candidate.  McCain, free from considerations of propriety is playing fast and loose with the hot potato of public opinion and represents a genuine, high-risk threat to us right at the moment.  Let's hope that Congressional Democrats and Obama have a cunning plan to achieve the essential national objective of economic recovery without committing assisted electoral suicide.

Hey, the man's a maverick! (none / 0)

Unpredictable, he follows his own nose, not some predetermined planned event like a debate?

That's for ordinary NON-Mavericks?

By day he's is a mild mannered (OK, he's a grumpy curmudgeon) Senator from a SW state.

But, SUDDENLY, he can morph into

CAMPAIGN SUSPENSION-MAN!

Able to cancel scheduled events at the drop of a poll...

Book McCain?

He may show up.

He may not?

Just ask David Letterman?

Ask a University to organize a multi-million dollar TV event?

But, again, he may show...HE MAY NOT!

Only the Shadow knows (oh, wait, that is a different comic book..)
