Evolution 1/ Palin 0

The Vatican has just announced that the theory of Evolution is compatible with the bible according to Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, the Vatican's culture minister.   Creationism belongs to the "strictly theological sphere" and could not be used "ideologically in science."

Gov. Palin supports teaching both creationism and evolution in schools, her idea of "teach the controversy" is just a back door strategy to promote this discredited pseudoscience.

Intelligent Design has no business in a science classroom, same as alchemy, astrology and wizardry being elevated as alternatives to chemistry, astronomy and physics.

People are entitled to their own beliefs, but that does not give them the right to substitute beliefs for facts and mandate their instruction.

To quote Adam Savage, "I reject your reality and substitute my own."

Its not about your beliefs, but how you go about promoting them.

Creationism should be taught in schools (none / 0)

along with the mythology of other cultures - Greek, Native American, Chinese, Indian, etc.

Perhaps the Pope is watching what is happening on Wall Street and has become convinced that the theory of "survival of the fittest" is actually quite robust.

Poor Pastafarians!!  Their "scientific" world view that the giant spaghetti monster created man and life on earth will be denied the right to be taught along side all these other "theories"!!

Oh the unfairness of it all!!

Alternative Theory (none / 0)

Hey, don't knock the Patafarians who worship at the alter of Olive Garden.

While we're at it, gotta teach the Paul Bunyan theory of geology, creating the grand canyon by dragging his ax and the rocky mountains by putting out a campfire.

I might be crazy... but are you seeing what I'm seeing?

Unfortunately it's meaningless (none / 0)

Most fundamentalist Christians think that Catholics are a mere step above devil worshippers or pagans.  That the Vatican is starting to come around to its more clever and scientifically minded members like Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi is a good thing for the understanding of evolution among educated and reasonable people, but essentially meaningless when it comes to American fundamentalists.

Mutually exclusive (none / 0)

You put your finger on it - "educated and reasonable" doesn't describe fundamentalism.

How about voting for an atheist next time around?

I'd be happy to. (none / 0)

Sadly it's nearly impossible for athiests to be successful in politics.  We believe in Seperation of Church and State but not a Seperation of Religion and Statesman.

I have the feeling there are a lot of atheists in politics. I think they just lie about it.
