John McCain Escalates "Celeb" Attack

The third iteration of John McCain's "celeb" attack on Barack Obama is, I think, the most egregious, as it just blatantly makes shit up about Obama's tax policy, fearmongers about the safety of seniors' "life savings" and portrays Barack Obama not only as a celebrity "not ready to lead", but as an elitist who is uncaring and oblivious to the plight of people who are hurting.

Watch it:

McCain here is going directly to where Democrats are traditionally strong, on the concept of compassion, but in so doing opens up himself to attacks on his own wealth. Not that wealth in itself is a crime or equates to elitism necessarily, but if McCain wants to go down that road, Josh Marshall sums up what turnabout might look like.

Must be grand to be flying in your private jet and trying to decide which of your eight homes to fly to.

Will Team Obama go that route? Not likely and so far their only response to this ad is a sternly worded statement. Why the statement is good: it uses the word "lie" twice.

"This ad is a lie, and it's part of the old, tired politics of a party in Washington that has run out of ideas and run out of steam. Even though a host of independent, nonpartisan organizations have said this attack isn't true, Senator McCain continues to lie about Senator Obama's plan to give 95% of all families a tax cut of $1,000, and not raise taxes for those making under $250,000 a single dime. The reason so many families are hurting today is because we've had eight years of failed Bush policies that Senator McCain wants to continue for another four, and that's what Barack Obama will change as President."

I'm glad to see the Obama campaign flat out calling McCain and Republicans liars. It's not the first time, you'll recall on Wednesday when Barack hit back against the implication that "inflating your tires" was the extent of his energy plan, he said "first of all, they're lying." It's nice to see Obama not mincing words.

Why the statement isn't really that good: it's just a statement.

More please.

Update [2008-8-8 14:27:23 by Todd Beeton]:I also like the prominence of the phrase "old and tired" to refer to McCain's politics -- not an accidental turn of phrase I suspect.

"Lie" (2.00 / 1)

That's right. Just say it. In 2004 I wanted Kerry to call Bush the liar he is sooooo badly!

A TPM Reader's Response: (none / 0)

Maybe have some ads showing the adoring crowds that fawned over JFK and Ronald Reagan and have the narrator ask if Senator McCain thought those people's hopes and dreams were worthless, too.

Barack's response shouldn't be an attack on McCain himself but rather his implication that movements don't mean anything when in fact they have the power to lift the country.

Re: A TPM Reader's Response: (2.00 / 1)

I think it would just feed the argument that Obama is full of himself for him to respond by comparing himself to JFK.

I think people are focused on real problems and real solutions, and Obama has been doing a good job discussing exactly those things of late.  By getting into a pissing contest over "celebrity" arguments, he'd be doing exactly what the GOP wants him to do.

I just don't understand the celebrity argument.  We've always elevated our President to celebrity status.  Why would we want a President who we couldn't elevate to celebrity status?

I'm curious to know why the media hasn't asked this of John McCain.

Re: John McCain Escalates "Celeb" Attack (2.00 / 1)

I think the best answer are more biography ads about Obama's life that then segue to policies. No, they are not flashy, but that doesn't mean they won't be effective.

Pre 1992 Democratic convention, lots of Americans thought Bill Clinton came from a wealthy family. They didn't know he had a child. They didn't know about his mother raising him with her parents (sound familiar?). They knew he went to fancy schools.

The "Man from Hope" video and the convention erased that impression.  Obama can do the same thing with his convention, with the help of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Meanwhile, many in the press are appalled at what their bud John McCain is doing.

Speaking as someone in Georgia (dunno where you're from), I've seen PLENTY of biographical ads. What we haven't seen is enough issue-based ads. Or ones that point out what a brain-addled phony the GOP is running. This IS a race between two candidates, right?

You make a good point. Elections are about CHOICES. It's not Obama or not-Obama. It's Obama or McCain.

This is a great offensive ad/policy line of argument against McCain: http://thepage.time.com/2008/08/08/obama -camp-uses-ohio-dhl-issue-against-mccain /

Re: John McCain Escalates "Celeb" Attack (none / 0)

Once Obama makes this clear (which will inevitably happen as the campaign heats up), he will have won. He just needs to make sure that he gets enough momentum from his convention that he kills the GOP convention dead in its tracks. And then he needs to find something that will completely distract from McCain's speech.

I believe Obama must go that route, at least partially. Remember John Kerry and the Swift Boaters? As I recall, Kerry issued sternly worded statements, but look where that got him. He didn't fight back in the same media. While Obama's statement is certainly stern, his team at least needs ads calling McCain a liar over and over again.

Finally the word "Lie".  Twice even.  Next, Liar.  Please.

meh (none / 0)

this is a pretty common negative ad, I was expecting  something to the effect where they called Obama's mom a whore. A statement is good enough for this one ,but the campaign better call BS after the convention.

Yeah, what kind of idiot would want to be popular while running for president. geez, I would rather pick the loser no one really likes that finished at the bottom of his class then the one who finished highly and is very popular, I can see how dumb and unlikable is enough for some though I guess

Re: John McCain Escalates "Celeb" Attack (none / 0)

1. I thought it was Obama's plan to have a response ad out within 24 hours of McCain's "attack ad." So will we be seeing that soon?

2. When is Obama going to go on the offensive instead of just responding to McCain's attacks?

3. It seems to me that the big thing that nobody is talking about is that the underlying sentiment to these "celebrity" ads is that John McCain is simply jealous of Obama's rock-star attention. Why has nobody brought that up? If we keep pointing this out, then McCain will look more and more pathetic and desperate every time this "celebrity" claim is made.

Re: John McCain Escalates "Celeb" Attack (none / 0)

McCain's crew is running this ad abut 6-1 in Central PA (see my comments in the PA Polling stuff...) and it seems to be doing nothing in PA but wasting McCain's money.(Go John waste money!)The more he puts into ads like this in Places he will lose and lose big like PA is great for us..There are no big Senate races here and it means it can't improve the run after 60 either.
