McCain falsely invokes POW Card for Liking ABBA

short diary but it's amazing that anytime McCain needs to justify something he invokes his captivity in vietnam.

First there was his story that he told in Wisconsin while campaigning that he gave the name of the starting line for the Green bay packers to his captors in nam.  However, in his book he said it was the pittsburgh steelers.

Just now on MSNBC they played a clip of him saying "Dancing Queen" by ABBA was his favorite song because his tastes in music "stopped evolving when his plane intercepted a surface to air missile.

The only problem is that ABBA formed in 1972 and "Dancing Queen" was produced in 1975.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abba

Of course the surface to air missile incident was in 1967..

I know a small issue but this guy lies better and gets away with it more than anyone else I've ever seen.

Or he really THINKS ABBA was around then.... (none / 0)

Don't know so much as he is lieing as he is getting slightly absent minded, he almost seems slighly senile at times.

I saw him speak here in Seattle very early on in the 2000 campaign, he spoke at a small aircraft plant down by Boeing field, to about 200 people, so I got really close.

He seems so much less sharp, almost dull witted, he never had to keep saying "my friends" as a set-up line.

I don't know HOW the Obama campaign can expliot this, but I think, if he continues to detoriate like this, how the hell can he keep up the pace and mental processes need to be CIC?

The debates will be interesting, won't they?
Obama faced Hillary and got better and better, McCain has a hard time staying on message sometimes and had what, 3 debates with Fred, Rudy, Romney and Ron Paul? Oh yeah, don't forget the Huckster. All on the same stage.
Not mention that he'll look old and tired sitting next to Obama.

The question is, will the press call him on it?

Katie, Wolf, Tom Brokaw all seem to love the Maverick Man.

If if was up to Couric, maybe she would edit the tape to help McCain out of a gaffe?

Fro what I've read, we're getting Jim Lehrer as mod for the first debate, Tom Brokaw for the second and Bob Schieffer for the third.
No more "gotcha" debates, I hope!

Yee gods, he's getting as bad as "a noun, a verb and 9/11" Rudy with this POW stuff.
And sometimes, I don't think he's lying, I think he just doesn't have that good of a memory. OR he's "confused".
Here's something I heard about ABBA (okay, I admit it, I was a fan!), not one member of the band spoke English, they learned to sing all the songs phonetically.

Obama can't let him have it both ways (none / 0)

he either must be painted as a liar, or senile..

Nonono (none / 0)

You're way off base. McCain is VERY RELUCTANT to ever talk about his POW experience. That's why so few Americans can identify him as a veteran.

In all seriousness, though, if anyone can find ONE INSTANCE where McCain actually refuses to discuss that he was a PoW, I'll give you $10 on PayPal. Oh, and coming while on the subject of why he cheated on his invalid wife doesn't count.

That $10 offer is real. However, it is also first come, first serve.

Good god.  Someone needs to parry this YESTERDAY.

"Elizabeth Edwards has pointed out that you personally enjoy a government health care plan similar to the one you're decrying in your ads about the Democrats."

McCain: "that's a cheap shot - there are a few years there where I was under the care of another government".

"You're right Sean, how can we trust someone who lies to their family?  How can we trust John McCain if his own wife couldn't trust him?"

Innanity: "He was a POW for 5 years!"

Re: McCain falsely invokes POW Card for Liking ABB (none / 0)

Come on, that's not even a lie.  Saying his tastes in music stopped evolving is just a way of saying he likes 70s music.  I haven't seen the clip but it doesn't even sound like something that would have been said seriously.

If you want to make the point that McCain brings up the POW issue every chance he gets, well sure, but calling this a lie?

Well, I'll agree there (none / 0)

But it IS an instance of him tying the POW issue onto something in an absurd way.

"Hey, why do you like Stone Temple Pilots so much?"
"Oh, I had a heart attack back in 94."

"Why do you still listen to Van Halen?"
"Because I broke both my arms and legs in 1984. It reminds me that I can jump now."

"What music influences you the most?"
"Well, I like Aerosmith, because my mother died in 1973 and my father died in 1991."

Re: McCain falsely invokes POW Card for Liking ABB (none / 0)

they showed it on Countdown> He said it and he said he remembers it from when he was a POW. Lie is that song didn't come out until '76.

Which means that the North Vietnamese were more revolutionary in their methods than anyone even imagined.

If you admitted liking ABBA (none / 0)

wouldn't you try to immediately shore up your macho cred by referencing your POW years?

by JJE on Sat Aug 16, 2008 at 01:30:01 AM EST

Perhaps ..... (none / 0)

McCain is remembering 'Dancing Queen' not because of ABBA, but because it was his pet nickname for J. Edgar Hoover.

It's easy to get things confused ya know?

LOL.

Hell's bells, even the GOP didn't have to crucify Eisenhower's record in order to make Reagan their 'saint'. We can have two great ones, you know?
