Thought that John McCain had taken enough of a beating for allowing his chief economic advisor to call America a "nation of whiners" and to speak about a "mental recession" facing the country? Think again. McCain is apparently welcoming Phil Gramm back into his presidential campaign with open arms.
Ousted John McCain campaign co-chairman Phil Gramm is back with the campaign's top advisers this weekend, as the campaign gathers top supporters for a series of briefings in scenic Aspen, Colo. The former Texas senator stepped down from his position after he said in an interview last month that the country is in a "mental recession" and that we had become a "nation of whiners."
Gramm was seated in the front row, with other top supporters, this afternoon as McCain addressed the Aspen Institute in a "conversation" with Walter Isaacson, president of the institute and a former editor of Time magazine.
What a campaign McCain has been running this past week -- embracing Jack Abramoff's one-time best friend in politics, Ralph Reed, and now bringing back into the campaign Phil Gramm, a huge supporter of the subprime lending industry who mocked the economic crunch felt by many Americans. This is how McCain tries to convince voters he's not out of touch?
