They Could Be In Cuba.

(cross-posted at Kickin it with CG)

In the summer of 1964, the "Freedom Summer" campaign was launched.  Dedicated to register to vote as many African American voters as possible in the state of Mississippi, which up to that time had almost totally excluded black voters.  The project was organized by the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), an umbrella of four established civil rights organizations: the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).  Over 1,000 people volunteered interested in helping out the civil rights cause.

At that time, many of Mississippi's white residents deeply resented the outsiders and any attempt to change their society. State and local governments, police, the White Citizens' Council and the Ku Klux Klan used murder, arrests, beatings, arson, rape, spying, firing, evictions, and other forms of intimidation and harassment to oppose the project and prevent blacks from registering to vote or achieving social equality

On June 19, the United States Senate -- after a lengthy filibuster and vote of cloture -- passed the landmark Civil Rights Act. Two days later, three progressives James Chaney, a 21-year-old black man and local Freedom Movement activist from Meridian, Mississippi; Andrew Goodman, a 20-year-old white Jewish man, student and summer volunteer from New York; and Michael Schwerner, a 24-year-old white Jewish CORE organizer and former social worker also from New York travelled to Neshoba County, in order to inspect the ruins of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church.

The church, a meeting place for civil rights groups, had been burned just five days earlier.  Before the three left the area, they stopped by the local COFO office.  Schwerner, aware that their station wagon's license number had been given to members of the notorious local Citizens Council, told COFO workers to contact the FBI if he hadn't called them by 4:30 p.m.

At approximately 5:00, Neshoba County deputy Cecil Price stopped the blue Ford carrying the trio. He arrested Chaney for allegedly driving 35 miles per hour over the speed limit. He also booked Goodman and Schwerner, "for investigation."   All were denied telephone calls during their time at the jail. COFO workers made attempts to find the three men, but when they called the Neshoba County jail, the secretary followed her instructions to lie and told the workers the three young men were not there.

Chaney was then fined $20, and the three men were ordered to leave the county. Price followed them to the edge of town, and saw them heading toward Meridian on State Highway 19, at approximately 10:30 p.m.

That was the last time they were seen alive.

Some local officials were hardly sympathetic to their dissapearance. Neshoba County Sheriff Lawrence A. Rainey said, "They're just hiding and trying to cause a lot of bad publicity for this part of the state". Mississippi governor Paul Johnson dismissed concern by stating that "they could be in Cuba."

When the FBI offered a reward for news of the men's whereabouts, a break came in the case. The men's bodies were found on August 4.  Schwerner and Goodman had each been shot once in the heart; Chaney, the lone African-American, had been savagely beaten and shot three time

The Ku Klux Klan, aided by local police, kidnapped and brutally murdered them.  Despite overwhelming evidence and two confessions, the State refused to prosecute the killers.

The U. S. Department of Justice appointed John Doar, to bring Federal charges (of Civil Rights Violations) against the killers. Against tremendous odds, Doar's successful prosecution led to convictions against many of the conspirators.  However, after 40 years, and only in 2005, finally was one of the killers convicted of their murders.

On this hot summer night, with all the bickering over the primary and election, let us pause and remember the sacrifices of the progressives before us and continue to fight for justice in the world.

Re: progress.... (none / 0)

continue to fight for justice in the world

It is quite evident that we, the United States, use double standards when interacting with the world, totally forgetting our values and the progress we made from 1964 onward. In foreign policy, as fully demonstrated by the Bush administration, and those before it, like Reagan who supported the Apartheid regime in South Africa, or ignored genocides and ethnic cleansings happening before their eyes (Nixon, Cambodia; Clinton, Rwanda; Bush II, Sudan-Darfur, Israel-Palestine), we seem to show a Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde face to the world, forgetting entirely our dedication to freedom and justice after 1964.

Never again? Not unless political expediency demands our looking the other way, or even condoning it.

Re: i agree... (1.00 / 2)

You say that you believe in justice in the world.

That's strange. I earlier put up photos of many Israeli human rights activists whose work is of the caliber of Chaney, Goodman, Schwerner, albeit on behalf of Palestinian freedom and self-determination, and against Israeli occupation and colonialism that goes on daily, but they were removed by administration because you felt they were antiIsrael. These people are antiIsrael?

I suggest that you are demonstrating the same double-standards, hypocrisy, I remarked about concerning US foreign policy in my earlier post above? You just can't have it both ways and expect people to take you seriously, even though, like many others, I recommended your diary. Our post1964 civil and human rights agenda is universal without exception.

Respond, then. If you are going to be a critic of my diaries, then you must also answer to the human rights injustices you apparently support, or at the minimum, are silent about.

I've heard of this happening on Daily Kos, but it was usually right wing GIYUS troops who were asked to engage a site in order to remove materials that were not complimentary to Israel. Apparently, Israeli human rights activists are a danger to Israel. You apparently agree.

Implore someone else.

Two wrongs, (2.00 / 1)

Going through here uprating someone for doing what you hide rated someone else for doing elsewhere is called hypocrisy.  It's wrong every time, no matter who is doing it.  "He/she started it" is only a legitimate argument if you're six years old or younger.

dont bother.  that particular user is questionable at best.

shergald's diary in question that they are referring to was not 'hijacked' by me.  i simply asked him how much he gets paid to blog since he indicated that he was reposting a diary from 2006!  then when i was questioned - i pointed out that shergald was banned from kos doing what he does here.  so if that's comparable to posting pictures of dead children in a blog about civil rights activists then we both know what type of people we are dealing with.

but major props to you for helping me deal with the trolls.

It was the first comment in a diary in which he or she said that they had first commented on it in 2006.

"How much do you get paid to blog?" followed by an off-topic, beligerent back-and-forth.

That's trolling.  And I couldn't care less whether or not pointing that out makes me questionable to you.

We have, and we have not. (2.00 / 2)

It would be obscene to not acknowledge that the price paid by all those who have worked to get us this far has not been valuable.  Both folks like Rev Wright and, imho, folks who rant places like this about how horrible the country is on these sorts of issues ften do just that.

Karl and I have discussed the need for compromise and small steps to achieve great ends, and he is full of stories about just such things.  A classic is when he was in the south in the early sixties and went to have breakfast at a black restaurant and could not get served.  His local host (a black pastor) explained that for him to take that stand at that time in that place would have brought down retribution on the restaurant by the local (white) police force, so while it contravened the foundation of the purpose he was pursuing he decided to leave.

Many who would burn the bridges ahead of us would be well served to learn that the sacrifices we have to pay on the road to a better world are not always as self-fulfilling as chaining oneself to a gate for the cameras, but rather include internalizing disappointment for doing necessary things for which the critics on the sidelines will stone you.  Bearing the resentment of your peers is another high price to pay.

My oft-referenced step-dad (2.00 / 3)

Rev. Karl Lutze was one of the people who organized college students to go down to the south and register black voters.  With typical non-chalance he tells about being followed by Klansmen in pickup trucks while going house to house.

I don't think it is possible for the rest of us to fully understand what it means to put our beliefs on the line to that level.  We live in such safe little bubbles - fearing the most  unlikely risks to ourselves - and shying from any action which could be tracked back to ourselves while bitterly grumbling about those who put themselves at risk trying, and often failing, to better the world.  It would be preferrable to me to be shot walking those dirt roads with Karl or Mr. Chaney than to live as so many of us do today.

Two of Karl's books - "Awakening to Equality" and "To Mend the Broken" - are the best depictions of what it means to put your life where your mouth is, imho.  Anyone who is serious about understanding the civil rights movement we are still in the midst of can get copies at the link in this comment.

I know what you mean (2.00 / 2)

One of the most frustrating things is that so many of the generation (and the one that followed) that went with Karl personally into the mouth of the dragon have become the helicopter-parents of today.  "Not me" "can't be bothered" "I-pay-my-taxes" nebishes as quick with a cynical criticism as they are to avoid a conflict.  We have become so eager to protect our precious skins that we have given up our right to an opinion.

My brother pointed out that by forcing me past that edge early in life, the bullies of my childhood achieved the greatest work in their lives by making me such a mouthy bastard.  We have lost the understanding of how fulfilling it is to stand up for what we believe in.

Whenever I see whites bitch about Rev Wright's provocative speeches(which admittedly contained exagerrations and some slightly paranoid rantings),I just want to remind them to be thankful that those rants are all that is left and to be thankful that African Americans never organized their own Mossad and wiped out every White person who were complicit in the racial stuff in the early to mid20th century. A lot of uncles, grandparents would be missing today. Saying Goddamn America is very mild compared to what I would have done if I lived in that era as an African American.
