I am going to put my vote up for an auction type sale. The highest bidder shall have my vote. There are no minimum bids, and I have no "reserve".
There is only one catch. In order to make a bid, the candidate must be pre-qualified. And in order to pre-qualify, they have to demonstrate a commitment to justice. One way to do that:
free the Uighurs who are now detained in Guantanamo, and grant them refugee status in the US
The Uighurs are a Muslim minority group from Western China. There are 6 Uighurs who have been in Guantanamo for 6 years ~ a product of a system that is incapable of admitting mistakes. They were originally sold to US troops by bountyhunters in Pakistan back in 2002. They had fled to escape fighting in Afghanistan in Nov 2001, and they had fled to Afghanistan to escape persecution in China (yes, these people actually fled to a Taliban regime).
The US government classified these people as enemy combatants based on the flimsient evidence possible (they may or may not have been associated with a group that may or may not be associated with Al Quaeda). It continues to classify them as "enemy combatants", even though it now admits that they are not "combatants" of any sort, and that they have never been Al-Quaeda related. The US continues to call them enemy combatants, even though the US also wants to release them.
But the US cannot release them because they cannot be turned over to China, and noone else will take them.
I say: grant them refugee staus here, give them a fair compensation and release them to lead a productive life here. They have earned that right for the 6 years that have been taken away from them.
Candidates that publicly adopt that position will be qualified to bid for my vote. I hear that Sen McCain has already stated his position on this issue. I am waiting to hear from the rest of the candidates.
