Walmart's Sercurity: Are You Living Better Yet?

cameras.jpgTwo stories today highlight a major issue with Walmart's corporate culture and, more importantly, the danger of the corporation to its customers.

The first story comes from Kansas where Renee Smith was assaulted in a Walmart bathroom. Apparently several people saw her purse being stolen, including a Walmart employee, but no one did anything to stop it. The most upsetting part of this story though, is that after the assault, she went to a security officer in the store and pointed out the woman who stole her purse, but they didn't do anything about it. Instead, they simply let the thief leave the store. It is appalling, but it seems pretty clear that Walmart's security don't really care about preventing crime, unless it involves significant monetary loss for the store.

So what exactly does Walmart's security care about? The second story answers that. According to The Morning News, Walmart won a permanent gag order against Bruce Gabbard, a former security employee who spoke to the media after he was fired. He revealed that in his job he spied on reporters, infiltrated groups critical of Walmart (like this one), and spied on employees, vendors, and consultants.

Yes indeed, this is Walmart helping you live better at its best. It is well documented that crime is an issue at Walmart. Walmart stores, and their parking lots in particular are often a hotbed of crime, but Walmart continues to focus not on preventing these crimes (which would be quite easy) but on spying. Getting mugged is apparently Walmart's idea of you living better.

Okay I hate WalMart but I must be fair, most of the large retailers do not allow employees to stop shoplifters or involve themselves in situations like this. It is because in todays world the suspect is likely to pull a gun and start shooting. The companies policy is usually we have them on camera, we have there car on camera, we'll turn it over to the police, there is no sense anybody getting killed over it.

my friend had her purse stolen at wal-mart. when she asked to see the video tapes of the security cameras that had caught the incident, the manager had to admit that the camera were not actually taking any footage and that they were only used as deterrents;

[i dont expect so much from walmart anymore-]

I wonder how much stuff gets stolen out of there? I know people that live off shoplifting, and I suppose walmart is like a little friend to them. I will have to ask around to see what folks say.

its relatively easy to steal from walmart if you look innocent; or depending on the time of day [late at night I dont think they care as much if you steal stuff] those little ladies that check the receipts always target me, apparently I look guilty, by opting out of plastic bags and trying to carry all my goodies by hand.

[i dont know, those little old ladies that guard the doors are pretty intimidating; they must stop tons of hardcore thieves!]

Alyssa,

this is pretty common. Most of the cameras installed at Walmarts were put up to spy on employees who were trying to unionize their store. Once they were fired or shut up, the cameras stayed up, but no one monitors them, and with the real threat of unionization gone, they stop recording anything. After all, who cares if someone gets kidnapped and killed from their parking lot, it's the unions that are really scary.

We could be. (2.00 / 1)

We are going to have to wake up now to the fact that stores like Walmart are dinosaurs. Granted, they are dangerous dinosaurs, that haven't quite died off yet. I am trying to shop more locally in every way. I am seeing food coops popping up everywhere. I want to support products that do not involve huge transportation costs and that support good wages for the producers of the products.

Oh yeah, and walmart shit always breaks.

Re: Walmart's Sercurity: Are You Living Better Yet (none / 0)

But if Ms. Smith had lost the receipt for her purchase, she'd have been manhandled by a security guard on the way out and the police would arrive to book her shortly.

The dystopian world of Wal-Mart: where the only crime that counts as crime is a mindless infraction of arbitrary rules, and interpersonal assaults are just part of the day.

Wal-Mart actions are exactly like the Bush administration -- ignore the well-being of the citizens/shoppers, but watch out for your own back through illegal means.  This is what I'd expect from a GOP-like, morally bankrupt corporation like Wal-Mart.
