A cookout with some bastards

Every year I attend a BBQ held by a friend of the family.  Her name is Deborah and sadly is a big-time Republican, though oddly enough not so much a conservative (well socially at least).  Now her late father and my father go way back, fought together in North Africa in WW2, so these people are practically family. Well, as mentioned, she holds an Independence Day BBQ cook out every year, and my father goes out of respect... and a free meal. Outside of me, sometimes, he's the only other non-Republican at these things.

Now, since 2000, since I started finding myself parting ever farther from Republican politics, my appearances at this cook out have been on and off.  The reason being was that many of the folks there are die hard conservatives, and arguments tended to be twenty to one.  You can probably guess who was that 'one.'  Its a real turn about, considering, that Debbie was the person that got me into politics (particularly the GOP) when I was a young Johnny Venom.  The folks at the BBQ were my political kin for a long time, and when I turned the other way, it came to them as a shock.

You'd be amazed, once you change parties, how fast your "friends" can quickly become your enemies.  Well, it's not like they wish me ill will, well most of them don't, just that they find it much better if I weren't voting.  Anyways, my father goes and gets Debbie's brother a belated birthday gift (his being on the 1st of July), a large set of grilling utensils and stuff.  Of course, an 83 year old isn't going to bother with hauling that, no that's apparently were I come in.  Reluctantly, or probably I'm just very stupid, I agreed.  Ok, I'm gonna skip a whole bunch of boring bits, what with the greetings and such. What I really want to get to is a series of conversations I had with some of these selfish gits.

Now conversations ebb and flow on all sorts of things.  So, instead, I'm just gonna break them down by topics.  You don't really have to know their names, they're conservatives.  And, for the most part, you've probably already got an idea on what they are going say for the most part.  Still, allow me to irritate your senses a bit just to show you what kind of assholes we're dealing with who want more power or at least keep what they got.  A little reminder to all the factions of the liberal/progressive side and the Democratic Party, why we need to stay unified.  Because of folks like PUMA are successful in stopping Barack Obama, we could have what is said below as the mindset for policy!

"Healthcare"

Me: So yes, I'm voting for Barack because as someone on Medicare and now Medicaid, now's the time for universal care.  What we have now is not enough, and I would like proper coverage without the current limitations.

Older male conservative engineer:  No you don't.  Trust me, I've traveled around the world on business.  What they have is socialized medicine.

Middle-aged female conservative chimes in:  John, do you really want to wait in lines the next time you need surgery?

Older male conservative engineer: Most places, socialized medicine is failing.  I've got property in Florida, we got Canadians flocking down there and you know what?  They come down here to use our hospitals because they can't wait any longer!  No, there's a better way!

Me: Better way?  How? (I was curious as to how he would say what I thought he would)

Older male conservative engineer:  You need to have real market forces to drive competition to lower prices.

Me: But we have a free market system in healthcare now, and I still can't get coverage!

Older male conservative engineer: No, what we have is half-ass markets in healthcare, but we need to remove the government from it all together.

Me: what about the poor?

Older male conservative engineer: That's what charities and religious organizations are for.  Let them run a special hospital for folks like that.  Also, we have Stroger Hospital, those people can have access to that.

Now, what I think should be developed, if the government HAS to come in, is to just grant everyone catastrophic care.  So if you get a disease or a car accident, then the government comes in.

Me: What about doctors?

Older male conservative engineer: Doctors can be paid with private insurance that will be mad cheaper.  They're going to have to compete.

Me: Since when do you ever see a doctor compete in price??

Older male conservative engineer: They will when they have no choice or else they should find another business.

"Jobs and Trade"

We started eating, and I suddenly found myself sitting next to Older Male Conservative and Female Plastics Lady.  Female Plastics Lady made her living in some odd fashion being a "middle man" selling plastics to manufacturers around the world.  She seemed to be all decked out in patriotic garb, with an armada of political buttons resembling medals on a general's chest.  My father made the mistake of bringing up jobs.

Now he's not mister free trader, far from it.  He's an old style trade unionist who has been warning about the perils of free trade since God knows when.  Unfortunately for him, this wasn't the crowd that would partake kindly to that. So when my father brought up the recent news how we lost 62,000 jobs, one shouldn't be surprised about the reaction.

Female Plastics Lady: It's natural, why complain?

Old Man Lou: But now they have to find work.  Where are they going to go?

Old Male Conservative Engineer:
Then let them retrain and find a new job.

Me: Natural?? That's just nonsense!  C'mon, we'll have nothing at this rate!

Female Plastics Lady: Yes, its the way its always been.  We've always gone through periods where people lose jobs but new industries come along.

Old Man Lou:
But what if there are no new industries? A man needs to feed his family.

Old Male Conservative Engineer: Then they can get charity, or go on welfare until they find work.

Me: I thought you didn't like the government getting involved?

Old Male Conservative Engineer: I don't, but we're throwing money away on them as it is, and they won't kill it off. So it's here, but they should be forced to find work.

Old Man Lou:
I blame free trade, we got all the jobs going for slave wages in China.

Female Plastics Lady: Look, this is a good thing.  When you go into a store, like say Walmart, prices are cheap.  Americans demand cheaper prices. Well how do you expect that to happen?

Old Male Conservative Engineer: Yes, exactly.

Female Plastics Lady:
Globalization, its here.  You have to adapt.  Look, I could care less if someone loses his job.

Old Man Lou:
Oh come on, what if it were you?

Female Plastics Lady: It was me, back 15 years ago.  But I decided to educate myself, and now I have my own business and I'm making money.  There is nothing stopping anyone from doing this.  Its not my problem and it shouldn't be your concern if someone loses their job.  People will always find a job in this country.

Old Man Lou:
But we need the manufacturing jobs here.  We need to protect them.

Female Plastics Lady:
So what you want is for someone to take my money and putting it to save companies to protect jobs?  That isn't how it works!  We shouldn't be subsidizing businesses just to save some work here.  You have to be cost effective.

At this point, she takes off her sunglasses and starts waving her right hand in various directions, and then continues on.

Female Plastics Lady: Look, China is now losing jobs to Vietnam because they aren't cost effective in some industries.  I know, I deal with them a lot in my business.  Companies will go where it is most cost effective, Lou, you just can't change that!

"The Price of Gas"

An hour later we began finishing up our meal, Deb had brought some wine and desert cakes and ice cream. One of the later arrived guests came by our table, with a book, "Hatred's Kingdom" by Dore Gold, a belated birthday gift for Michael.  We all said hello, and then the topic got onto gas.

Late Guest: Just filled up my car, Jesus gas was expensive.  Ended up filling my tank up for almost $100.

Female Plastics Lady: What kind of car do you have?

Late Guest: Expedition.

The table gives out an "ah".

Late Guest: We need to bring the prices down.

Much at the table agree, well minus a 4 year old in an over sized "God Bless the USA" t-shirt who joins the table to eat a star-shaped cookie.

Middle Age Female Conservative: I hear you.  That's why we need to drill more.

Old Male Conservative Engineer:
Well, we better move fast.  The Chinese are already drilling off of Cuba.

Late Guest: Why should they be getting that oil when it's so close for us to take it?

Me: There are no Chinese oil companies off western Cuba.  It's already been proven to be a story cooked up by Cheney.

Female Plastics Lady: Oh get off that, they are drilling off of Cuba.  And you know what else, don't be surprised if you find them drilling near California soon!

Old Male Conservative Engineer:
Would figure, California hates the US, probably would give the oil to China.

Late Guest: We need to open up new fields.

Middle Age Female Conservative: Like ANWAR!  Dammit, I've been saying this for years!  Same with off California and Florida!  Stupid environmentalists, they are keeping this country back!

"Iraq and terrorism"

By this point, Middle Age Female Conservative had jumped onto Iraq and national security.

Middle Age Female Conservative: Those liberals want to basically keep this country neutered!   Limit our energy so that we are incapable of defending ourselves.  Hell, this is what the terrorists want, you know!

Me: I highly doubt al Qaeda has infiltrated the environmental movement.

Female Plastics Lady: Pfft..not the way the liberal green wack jobs act.  The Democrats think the same way.  Bunch of dumb hippies who think we can live in this koom-ba-ya 'oh aren't we all great we get along' commune garbage.  No, you watch, your boy steals the White House, and he'll pull our boys from Iraq.  You know what that means don't you?

Me: That our friend's wish of having lower gas prices will come true?

Middle Age Female Conservative
: Don't be a smart ass.  No, and I'll tell you, I would take this as a personal slap in the face of that hoodlum does that.  I've got two sons over there!  They've worked their butts off over there, and now he (Obama) would just throw all that away?!

Repeatedly pointing her index finger onto the glass top table, her voice now in a slightly higher tone.

Middle Age Female Conservative: You remove those troops from Iraq, and the terrorists are going to be running that place in 24 hours!  Then, your good friend, will have to resend the troops!

Old Male Conservative Engineer: He'll be a black Jimmy Carter.  Then you watch, America will be pissed again and we'll get a new Ronald Reagan.  You know, in a way, I kinda hope he wins this November.

Female Plastics Lady: Gary (that's OMCE's real name) you're nuts!  You put that Chicago gangster in the White House, and he and his muslim allies will allow those fanatics to do what they please.  Today it's Iraq, but who knows where tomorrow.

Middle Age Female Conservative: Oh, God, I wish this president would just get it done already.

Me: Get what done?

Middle Age Female Conservative:
What needs to be done to secure us and our allies.  We need to go into Iran, we should have had troops in Pakistan, screw what's his name.  McCain gets in, you watch, he'll get the job done!

Me: You're crazy.  No way a war with Iran will solve anything!  We're already over extended.

Middle Age Female Conservative:
You want Iranians getting the bomb, John?  Do you want terrorists blowing up Israel?  I say let the Israelis get in on this too.  If they go, we go.

Late Guest: You don't want Iran to get the bomb.  Kiss our cities goodbye.

"Barack Obama"

Deborah finally came to our table.  She saw my Obama button (fuck it, I wear that everywhere!) and she gave a sour face to me.  Suddenly, she rubbed her forearm and then pointed at my button.

Deborah: You see this John? Whit skin.  You think he likes that?  No way. I wouldn't vote for an anti-Semite, he hates Jews John.  You know he's really a Muslim, don't you?

Me: Deb, that's a bunch of crap, and you know it.  There is no way in hell I'm going to believe all that.  Besides, the man's half white, for crying out loud!

Female Plastics Lady: But still a Muslim.

Me: No, he's not!

Deborah: How do you know?  The media?  They want a black person in so they can feel better about themselves.

Me: Because he isn't.  And as for the media...huh?

Old Male Conservative Engineer:
And how about that reverend?  You telling me, for twenty years he didn't know what kind of church that was.

Me: Wait a minute, if you're admitting he went to church, then you are in agreement he isn't a Muslim?

Old Male Conservative Engineer: No, because they can hide their faith very well.

Me: I think you're crazier than Janis (Middle Age Female Conservative)!

The banter went on, topics from Retzko to Indonesia to Michelle came up.  "She hates America" basically was the meme when it came to her.  These idiots were in total agreement that should Obama win, that the GOP would take the Senate.  And that in the following by-election of 2010, retake the House, in the belief that folks wanted gridlock.

I hope you can see why we need to win.  You all probably have your own 'Female Plastics Lady' or 'Old Male Conservative Engineer'.  These are real people, and sadly, across this country clones of these individuals abound.  They vote, and probably would do what they can to get others to go to their side.

We need to stay unified.  We can't let people like them win!  These individuals posses an almost Dickensian view on the welfare of this nation's citizens.  Their psychotic foreign affairs perspective is equally dangerous, if not more than their domestic policies.  This is, for the lack of a better set of terms, John Airbus McCain's new base.  Do we really want this group setting the nation's agenda?

God only knows how he did it.  I had a similar issue at Independence Day festivities, where the loons were talking about "the need to go conservative to restore our name in the world" and asking me "are you a communist?"

But I don't have the temperament for it.  Idiocy pisses me off.

There are usually many people I don't know at the 4th, so who wants to get into an argument with them or in front of them?

But if/when it comes up again with the family friend who brought it up in this case, I'll probably address his concerns.

One good things to come of it: they aren't crazy about McCain, and while they may hold their noses and vote for him, some will not.

It's good to be able to have a meal with folks you completely disagree with.  It reminds you of why you believe what you believe.  And sometimes you learn something.

But yeah, a lot of what you've relayed was ill-informed at best.

great diary. (2.00 / 7)

to be honest though - some of their points about socialized medicine (UHC) are true.  but i 100000000% would rather have my system than one in which 10% have no coverage and a huge group more are underinsured.

ill tell you a little story to underscore my point.  a few years back i met my mother in LA for a bit of girls vacay.  she went ahead of me by a few days.  a day before i left - my mom phoned me and said she had a bladder infection and had phoned her doctor from there and he had a prescription sent to the pharmacy - could i pick it up and bring it for her.  of course - i obliged.

when i arrived in los angeles - to our dismay the airline had lost my luggage (note:  always carry medicine in carry on).  now my poor mom had been suffering with this for a couple of days now and could no longer take it.  so we decided to go to the hospital so that she could get a prescription written and filled.  she had purchased medical insurance prior to leaving (as most canadians do before going to the US) so money was not of concern.

when we arrived at the hospital - cedars sinai - we were stunned.  it was just beautiful - it looked more like a country club than hospital to us.  but what's more - there was 1 person in the ER - 1 - we could not believe it.

after about 5 minutes in the waiting room - we were ushered into a room when a nurse came to ask us some questions, etc.  she told us that she was canadian and moved to the US since she made 3x the amount of money here than in canada.  but that she missed the country terribly.

finally the doctor arrived - my mom told him what the problem was and he wrote her prescription.  when we left - we were directed to a cashier!!!!!

the bill for the visit was $400 and the doctor did not lay one finger on my mom and was with us for a total of 4 minutes.

we left the hospital saying to each other that we were so grateful to have UHC.

That hospital (2.00 / 1)

IS a country club hospital.

Most city hospitals will have many people waiting in the ER. Some of them may be gang members that have been beaten, shot or stabbed. There is always at least one cop nearby and unless you are in dire medical needs..... you wait.... and wait.... and wait...

The weekends seem to be the worst.

no different, except you have coverage, you get cared for and you don't get a $400.00 bill for being "looked at".

Also... I am assuming no gang related crap or less of?

One other thing.... totally off the subject. Do you ever watch "Corner Gas" on the television machine?  :)

We get it on cable on WGN (Chicago station) but I believe it is a Canadian show.

I FRICKIN LOVE THAT SHOW!  :)

no - gang stuff here in my city too. (2.00 / 1)

but guns are illegal here- so its probably substantially less so than in cities in the US.

i also have private insurance with my job that covers things like dentist, eyeglasses and private hospital stays, etc.  and i do thank my lucky stars for how lucky i am.   especially i just had a baby and in the past 10 months i have been to the doctor a lot between myself and baby.

oh - and i don't watch corner gas - but have heard that it is funny - a spoof on small-town canada?  WGN carries it?  i think i get that channel - too funny.

are you in chicago?

not only do you wait in ERs in US but also you get (2.00 / 1)

a long wait to see any kind of specialist. When my mammogram came back with a suspicion of cancer, I was told the name of a surgeon to get in touch with. My appointment was for 5 weeks later only to get a call the day before informing me that the surgeon was closing her office (my gyno later told me she did so because she couldn't take seeing more and more young women and mothers dying of breast cancer) and was given another name which I had to wait 3 weeks to see only to be told after the biopsy that my cancer was very aggressive. So I lost 2 whole months when maybe the difference in waiting might have contributed to my never going in remission.

My stomach, liver and pancreas are shot to hell after 2 different rounds of chemo and I've had to wait 2 1/2 months to see a gastroentorologist. I'm living in Houston, a city reknowned for it's medical center and I had to wait regardless.

On the other hand, my friend in Toronto was diagnosed with ductal micro calcification on a Tuesday, was referred to a surgeon by her family doctor on Wednesday and spoke to the surgeon, himself (a rarity here) on Friday, who scheduled her for surgery at the Jewish Hospital on the next morning, Saturday, this was all done in the same week. So I take the rationing and waiting time excuses by americans against UHC with a grain of salt! The grass is not always greener on this side of the borders!

thanks for sharing.  and i am glad to hear that you finally got the treatment you needed.  its the stories like this that really make me angry and is one of the reasons that i so looked up to HRC and her passion for UHC.

my father lived in the US from when i was a small child until he passed and used to giggle as he called canada a 'communist' country.  yet - he always retained his citizenship for fear that if he got really sick that he could always come back and get treatment.

keep up the good fight suzie!

Re: great diary. (2.00 / 1)

It's funny how people complain about long lines with socialized medicine.  About 2 years ago, my girlfriend had a bladder infection that she couldn't stand and we went to an emergency room here in NYC since it was a Sunday and her doctor was not working.  We waited 3 hours before a doctor saw her and in that time I spent 2 hours with the stench of vomit since the lady in a wheel chair next to me had wretched.  Even though we informed the nurse, several times, it took them 2 hours to look at the lady and clean up the vomit.

When people talk about healthcare in this country being so great and how we don't want socialized medicine, I have to wonder if they've ever been really sick and not making 6 figures a year.

Re: great diary. (none / 0)

great point.

i kinda look at it like this analogy.  your country is like an employer and its citizens like employees.  does the employer treat its workers well?  does it do everything in its power to ensure a happy and healthy environment so that it may prosper?

not having healthcare or being in a society where a good chunk don't is really IMO not responsible to its people and beneficial to the future.

Re: great diary. (2.00 / 1)

Wow, have I got a story to share, then!  My mother had a heart attack a week before Christmas two years ago.  The ambulance took her to Lutheran General Hospital (once a non-for-profit church-run organization, now part of the Advocate Medical Care Group).  They were quick at the ER, but you had to see the lines for the others.  Apparantly there was a car accident, some victims were taken in, while others had to wait (I'm not making that up).  Anyways back to my mother.  She ended up staying in the hospital for 72 hours.  Now she had no insurance, at the time she had just started at a firm that did cleaning services for Home Depot and they offered no bennies.  Without counting the doctor's bill for services, her hospital bill by itself was about $62,000.  Including the doctor's and lab tests, add in another 20 grand.  Be glad, be very glad you had Tommy Douglas and your version of Medicare.

Thanks for all the work that went into this.  Rec.

I think it should be mandatory for every doubting Democrat to spend an hour with a conservative Republican listening to their arguments against Obama.  If that doesn't save you I don't know what will.

Thankfully, I no longer have to subject myself to my Republican ex-inlaws, the same entitled twerps who were regularly forwarding me "rag-head" emails back in 2004.  They included a brother-in-law who told me the only reason I was anti-Bush was because I was too "cowardly" to see my enlisted son shipped off to war.  (Conveniently, his kids never enlisted)

Here's the bottom line on these idiots -- they don't give a good God damn about anyone but themselves.  They honestly believe that their prosperity is a result of their hard work and faith in the right god and anyone not equally blessed doesn't deserve to be anyhow.

Re: A cookout with some bastards (2.00 / 4)

The way to deal with these people is to be prepared for their arguments. Health care is an easy one. Get the facts about the real level of care in this country compared to countries with UHC. There are plenty of reports out there showing the disgraceful condition of health care in this country. Start your argument by pointing out how our current system handicaps our companies when they have to compete with companies from countries that have UHC - Canada, Europe, and China all have UHC. Think what an advantage that gives their companies. Don't argue health care from a fairness point of view. Argue it from an economic point of view. That's the only thing a lot of these people care about - their wallets.

When they made comments about opening up ANWR expanding coastal drilling, did you point out that there would be no benefit for at least 10 years and what benefit there was would be very small? Did you point out that the oil companies have leases on 10's of millions of acres that they aren't drilling on? How hard did you push back against the urban myth about China drilling off Cuba? Not that they would believe you, since Cheney told them so.

The way to argue with these people is with the facts. They have little knowledge of the true state of things and argue from flawed thinking.

Move to Houston - it's lonely being a democrat (2.00 / 2)

here. This city is a lovenest for the Bushes. Barbara was able to stop construction of a mid-rise about 5 blocks away from their house because of privacy issues and threatened to move away. Result: construction banned because they're the city's treasure as quoted by the then Mayor Brown, a democrat!

She almost plowed into us driving out of her street in her Mercedes (remember how we were told she drove a Buick?) we had the green light but she just drove straight ahead and missed us by a hair as if the street belonged to her but worse when she followed us to the supermarket, my husband went ahead of her, to hold the door for her hoping for an apology, she gave him such a look of disdain, I'll never forget it, so in return, he let the door go but the sneers he got that day from the shoppers was not worth it! They live just up the street from us, so we see them often in the winter. When he comes in the supermarket, he's surrounded by security and everything comes to a standstill, but at least, unlike her, he's very gracious and apologitic about it.

I'm surprised at your interaction with these republicans. Maybe it's a cultural thing in the South, but everyone knows that I'm the lone democrat amongst my acquaintances, but everybody has always been very polite and would never discuss politics with me in a situation where I would be outnumbered. That would be just too tacky for them! What they say about me and my opinions behind my back, might be all together different, but I never felt ostricized for having a different point of view. Their responses have for the most part been, "we understand, you lived in Canada and abroad" patronizing maybe but not insensitive!

I empathize fully with your diary. I was curious (2.00 / 4)

to know how your dinner ended. Such dinner normally don't end well in my experience. Thus I tend to keep quiet in a room of conservatives. I've an unwritten rule with my conservative friends or relatives, they don't bring up rightwing politics, and I don't bring it up...

Well, we argued a bit.  I've known these idiots for a long long time, and in the end we basically agreed to disagree.  Besides, the conversation changed when someone brought a dog (there were three other dogs there) that seem to upset the others, an well...pandemonium!

This type of dialogue is routine in my neighborhood and social circle.  The few friends and family members of the Democratic persuasion speak in asides so as not to cause discomfort to hosts and hostesses and sensitive relatives.

Arguing doesn't help or change things in a social setting. People will come to their own conclusions , based on their own experiences, or, if they have a developed conscience or sense of justice, learning of the experience of others.

Re: A cookout with some bastards (2.00 / 1)

To be fair, we actually do have a "half-assed", non-free market for health care. Everyone both on the left and the right agree there. The rightwinger engineer guy was likely talking about the tax bias that has shifted people toward obtaining medical insurance through their employers, driving up costs because of the principle that the brunt of my medical decisions go to you my boss, not me and so on. Some people are stuck in jobs they hate because they need the coverage their employers give, others cannot afford the so-called "market price." Everyone has already agreed, from Hillary to McCain to Obama that taxes on individually-obtained medical insurance should be removed. As a result everyone has agreed on that basic point that there should be at least that kind of shift toward a free market.

Re: A cookout with some bastards (2.00 / 4)

I had a similar situation a couple of months ago...  it was at my barber shop... some guy who literally looked like a robber baron from the 19th century was spouting off tons of right wing talking points...  He was portly, wearing a three piece suit, had greased back hair... I was waiting for him to pull out a monocle...

Anyways, I couldn't take it anymore and I challenged him directly... I was nervous, since I didn't know the politics of my barbers and worried that I might get my head "buzzed"... It seemed that the barbers were very annoyed at this guy, so I gave it a shot.

He started off in the usual right wing strategy of trying to defame me.  He asked if I had a degree in economics... Surprise!  I did!  Ha Ha!  That threw him off big time... He asked me if I ever was out of the country.  I listed all the places I had been to around the world.  He was not happy...

The line that really shut him up was when I said that without appropriate taxation and government revenue, there is no investment in infrastructure that would be good for business... look at how bad the roads are in this state, and the bridge collapse in MN and of course our 3rd largest port being drowned in New Orleans...

The guy left pissed off... I was shaking from nervousness... you always have to worry about challenging conservatives, 'cos they are a very violent people...  Then, I looked at my barbers....

They applauded me!  It turns out they hate this guy!!  They loved my arguments and never expected someone like me to express them.  It turns out they are both democrats... I told them that there is no reason to be afraid anymore and to stand up!

Everyone here can be a hero and stand up to a right winger... even just for one day!

I feel your pain (2.00 / 2)

O know exactly what you're going through, having conversations like that.  I've become more and more liberal as I get older, and when I moved to the south (from the midwest), I was really shocked at how conservative everyone seems to be.  I have conversations very much like that at every company meeting and at least twice a week on the phone. Apparently, I'm the only liberal in the whole company, and everyone knows it.

One jackass from Florida told me he wanted to have Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton shot because of the minimum wage increase, and then gave me an incredibly wrong speech about how increasing the minimum wage lowers productivity and increases inflation, blah blah.  He was so wrong I didn't know where to begin.  You see, he was "better informed" than Hillary and Nancy, because he'd taken an economics course in college.  Um, guess what, moron?  Florida's minimum wage is higher than the national - Nancy and Hillary had nothing to do with that.  Also, you may want to take a refresher econ course, because every single point you made was either incoherent or just plain wrong. And gee, I wonder what made you select Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton for your threats.  Is it because you're a misogynistic pig, or because you're an idiot and they're the only two people you could think of?

I've found that many of the conservatives I've spoken to have no idea why they believe what they believe - they just parrot Sean Hannity's talking points. These are people who want to keep Guantanamo open, although they don't know where it is. They don't care about poor people, even though some of them are (or used to be) poor themselves.

It's pretty amazing the shit that comes out of peoples mouths.

Minimum wage (2.00 / 2)

Hey, OT, but I've got a minimum wage story.

So, ours just went up to an obscene $7.65 an hour on July 1 and the local AM radio news was "reporting" on that.  They mentioned how the rise would "hit" the entertainment, hotel and restaurant industries the hardest and then offered this from a spokesperson for the hotel industry --

"We be forced to choose between laying off staff, cutting back hours, cutting back on services or slowing down on construction of new facilities."

wow.  I guess "lowering profits, or cutting back on executive pay and perks" were off the table.

They didn't interview any poor snerd on what he was going to do with his extra $20 a week -- a couple books for the kid, enough gas to get to work every day of the week, new shoelaces for everyone.  Too bad.

Re: A cookout with some bastards (2.00 / 1)

Right wingers have this very distorted view on health care... even the chronically ill ones feel justified going into bankruptcy to get health care.  They feel that if they aren't paying out the nose, then the quality of care must be poor.  So, they can't conceive of socialized medicine being very good...

Some points to use against them...

They love to use the Canada argument about some richy rich Canadians that don't want to wait a couple months for elective surgeries... The Canadian health care system is funded mostly by the provinces, not the federal government.  Richer, more densely populated provinces have care and access that is vastly superior to our own.  The midwestern and northern provinces and territories don't do as well, but it's completely a question of funding, not the system itself!

When they ask you if you want to wait in line for a surgery, make sure you tell them that most Americans are already waiting in line thanks to private insurance rationing... the average wait for elective surgery in the U.S. is as long or longer than many socialized medicine countries thanks to our broken system.

Removing government from the health care system... they love that one... remind them about the little Vioxx affair... do you really want medicines to not be tested or inspected?  Do you want surgical procedures to have no medical review?  There's a reason why we have so many regulations in place in medicine... they are a result of serious abuses in the system!

Never mention the poor in regards to health care... do bring up chronic illness and insurability... especially if they have a close friend or family member with such a condition... remind them that their health care ideas would leave said family member destitute or bankrupt.

There are many ways to argue democratic points, but you should always be on the offense and turn their arguments against them.  Remember, conservatives only care about themselves, so make sure that your arguments are targeted towards their personal situation.

Re: A cookout with some bastards (2.00 / 1)

I'd like to add that if your conservative friends are of baby boomer age (they tend to be the worst conservatives--disciples of Reagan and all...) remind them not to sign up for medicare at age 65 since socialized medicine is so awful... make sure tell them that you will hold them to that and will be checking...

Their reactions will be as humorous as McSame claiming that he is an agent of peace in his recent commercials...

Re: A cookout with some bastards (none / 0)

The point I always make is that diseases are infectious. This simple fact seems to get overlooked a lot. It is in everybody's rational self interest to treat any and all conditions since if left untreated, conservatives might become infected. And, yes, heart disease, cancer, asthma and virtually everything else has an infectious component in its developement.

Always point out the very effective parts of health care provided by the government. Things like sanitary sewers and treatment, clean drinking water, restaurant inspection. Point out that the cutbacks in inspections result in people dying. Making people responsible for providing their own health care is like having everyone treat their own sewerage. Do you really think that having neighbors with pit latrines in their yard has no effect on you?

Underlying the presentations you were subjected to is the literary construct of 'cure'. Point out that universal practices, public health and readily available health care protect everyone. How do they expect to remain healthy when people with TB have no access to health care?

These folks are seriously deficient in scientific understanding of how people become 'sick'.
