OR-Sen: Jeff Merkley Calls On Gordon Smith To Donate Stevens Money To Charity

Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley, the Democratic nominee for senate from Oregon, has called on Sen. Gordon Smith to donate the $39,000 he received from Ted Stevens to charity.

The longest serving Republican senator in United States history, Ted Stevens was indicted today on federal corruption charges. Stevens has contributed $39,000 to Smith's campaign. [...]

"Senator Smith should donate these contributions to charities to help provide health insurance to Oregon children," said Speaker Jeff Merkley. "Ted Stevens has been indicted on very serious ethical charges. These charges cast an ethical cloud on money he raised from oil companies and others, some of which he passed on to Gordon Smith."

TomP has more in his rec'd diary including this tidbit:

It should also be noted that Gordon Smith's PAC donated $10,000 to Ted Stevens.

Tying every endangered GOP senator to Ted Stevens: priceless.

Update [2008-7-29 20:9:43 by Todd Beeton]:Both Gordon Smith and Susan Collins have given in and will be donating Stevens' donations to charity. I suspect they'd give away their party registration to charity as well if anyone would take it.

Update [2008-7-29 21:44:8 by Todd Beeton]:Looks like all the rage among Republican Senators today is to give Stevens' donations from this cycle only.

[Gordon] Smith spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride said in an e-mail that Smith will donate to charity the $10,000 that he received from Stevens for his current re-election campaign. "Given the indictment, donating the money is the appropriate thing to do," Gilbride wrote.

At least two other Republican senators up for re-election, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., and Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H., also announced Tuesday that they would donate to charity contributions from Stevens. Both said they would donate the $10,000 they had received from Stevens in the current campaign cycle to charity.

How dumb do you have to be to still have any Stevens money on the books?

I mean - it's been pretty clear for more than a year that the guy was gonna be indicted - frankly, the indictment actually looks lighter than I thought it would be.

I suppose ever penny counts with the disaster that is the GOP's 2008 electoral fortunes, but man... I'd have started quietly returning Stevens' cash last year and told him and his PAC thanks, but no thanks ever since.

Re: OR-Sen: Jeff Merkley Calls On Gordon Smith To (2.00 / 1)

A little pressure worked! Gordon Smith is donating the money to charity.

I highly doubt Gordon Smith would have donated the money if it weren't for Merkley, the blogs and the press pressuring him to do so.

Now, I wonder if Smith will ask for the money his PAC gave Stevens back? Hmmmmmmmm....

Re: OR-Sen: Jeff Merkley (2.00 / 1)

Great news, Sarah.  Smith wants his connection with Stevens out of the news.  But he gave $10,000 to Stevens after he knew Stevens was under investigation.  That won't go away!

Correction: Smith won't donate all the money (none / 0)

The Smith campaign just clarified and said they would only donate $10,000 of the $39,000 given to them.

Smith's PAC gave him 10K after FBI probe reported (2.00 / 2)

After doing some research, I think I found a second story that might be even more damaging to Smith.

Smith's PAC donated $10,000 to Ted Stevens about three weeks after the Washington Post reported that the FBI told Stevens to preserve some of his records related to the remodeling of his home by Veco.

Why did Gordon Smith give money to a politician who he knew was heavily involved in a bribery scandal?

In the future, will Smith's PAC put in place better rules and procedures so that it does not give money to corrupt politicians?

Or, rather, is Smith such a rabid Republican partisan that he will give his PAC money to ANY member of the GOP?

Thanks for your work on this. I'm not sure why Gordon Smith didn't hold off on giving Stevens money after he was implicated in the bribery scandal. Not very smart IMO.
