It's always interesting when I hear people express disappointment at John McCain's tactics as David Brooks did the other day on News Hour, discussing McCain's "he'd rather lose a war" attack on Barack Obama:
One, the candidate is diminished by the campaign. He's a great man who doesn't seem that way from the way the campaign is being run, because there's too much focused on day-to-day message management.
Chuck Hagel seemed similarly disappointed:
"I think John is treading on some very thin ground here when he impugns motives, and when we start to get into 'You're less patriotic than me, I'm more patriotic,' " Hagel replied, adding: "John's better than that."
Better than that? Really? Slandering and lying are not below John McCain. Does anyone remember his blatant lie in the primary that Mitt Romney supported a timetable for withdrawal? McCain hammered Romney incessantly and Romney wasn't ready for it, but it was nothing short of a lie. And now McCain is lying again in his new attack ad against Barack Obama claiming that the reason Barack didn't visit wounded soldiers in Germany was that he wasn't allowed to take "cameras."
Watch it:
The Obama campaign responds with its trademark understatement:
"John McCain is an honorable man who is running an increasingly dishonorable campaign. Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. Senator Obama was honored to meet with our men and women in uniform in Iraq and Afghanistan this week and has visited wounded soldiers at Walter Reed numerous times. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid, and it's not worthy of Senator McCain or the 'civil' campaign he claimed he would run."
And at least MSNBC gets the facts right:
NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that there was never a plan for Obama to take the press to Landstuhl, despite the claim by McCain folks and others. The plan was to go with his military aide, retired General Scott Gration. The Pentagon said Gration was off-limits because he had joined the campaign -- violating rules that it not be a political stop.Obama had gone to see wounded troops in Iraq earlier in the week, without even confirming he'd been there. No press, no pictures. He has done the same when he goes to Walter Reed -- never any press.
But why is no one calling McCain out for being the liar that he is? Instead people are expressing great disappointment that he's not fulfilling his promise to run an "honorable" campaign instead of admitting that his claim to run an issues-based campaign in the first place was just another one of McCain's blatant lies.
[editor's note, by Todd Beeton]I replaced the previous Obama statement with the correct one responding to this ad. The one I had originally posted was in response to McCain's previous attack.
