Dear bloggers:

RE: Widget Action:  "End Police Pre-Trial, Extra-Judicial Electrocutions and Executions" (Tasering)

Please consider placing one of these anti-taser widgets (various sizes available) at your blog, in preparation for a day of blogging against police pre-trial,
extra-judicial electrocution and execution of members of the public.

The widgets lead readers to a new "Electrocuted While Black" blog
(by African American Political Pundit and me), where we will link to all of the blogs that have notified us by e-mail that they have joined the anti-electrocution (taser) campaign by adopting one of these widgets.

Subsequently, the Afrosphere Action Coalition (AAC) will call for a day of blogging on the issue, and then issue a press release
including the names and links of the participating afrosphere blogs.

In spite of police claims that electrocuting Blacks and other members of the public is necessary and normally harmles, research reveals that 600 pound bears and
one thousand pound moose are often treated by game wardens with greater care for their wellbeing and integrity than are members of the public when confronted by police officers armed with electrocution/execution devices.

In fact, police call in the game wardens to treat wild animals humanely, while acting alone in treating Blacks and other members of the public inhumanely.

America Shoots Animals with Anesthetic Darts, but Electrocutes and Executes Human Beings Pre-Trial with 50,000 Volts of Frequently Lethal Force

Please send us an e-mail (francislholland@yahoo.com) as soon as you have adopted an anti-electrocition widget.  We must  stop pre-trial, extra-judicial electrocution and execution of Blacks and others, which has become the modern version of lynching.

This is an action of the Afrosphere Action Coalition.

Sincerely,

Francis L. Holland, Esq.

Well, that's helpful. Which part of the message is lacking credibility?

The problem isn't the TASER.  The problem is that it's being used for the wrong situations.

There are very specific situations where a TASER should be used:

  • As a less-lethal alternative to an officer's sidearm, in cases where lethal force would otherwise be justified.  Example: to subdue a schizophrenic man brandishing a sword who is posing a danger to the safety of officers and bystanders.
  • To subdue an individual who is in a position to otherwise bring harm to himself.  Example: to stop a fleeing 12-year-old girl from running into traffic and potentially killing herself.

Situations where it shouldn't be used, but routinely is?

To enforce compliance with officer commands.  As long as a suspect is resisting nonviolently, there is no call to use a TASER.

I read an interesting article (none / 0)

in the New Yorker last month about developments in "non-lethal" force use in law enforcement. It was informative, but also frightening. You can read an abstract here:

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/ 06/02/080602fa_fact_wilkinson

After reading that I was thinking, I believe that most states have laws/regulations requiring police to fill out a mountain of paperwork and take desk time after they've discharged their weapon on duty. We might be able to affect taser usage by making the bureaucratic consequences more cumbersome and requiring a similar level of reporting and review of the use of the taser. I don't know, maybe law enforcement already does this. Of course the easy recourse to a taser is a horrific practice and worthy of condemnation. But at a practical level, we don't have to convince everyone of that in order to have some change.
