Update: Dodd would keep Lieberman in Dem Caucus & Chairmanships

I watched Late Edition on CNN today and Wolf Blitzer posed the question to Senator Chris Dodd if his same-state Senator Joe Lieberman were to address the RNC convention, would he then call for him to be stripped of his chairmanships in the Senate. Dodd replied by calling Liberman a friend and said he would not push for the stripping the positions of one of McCain's top surrogates.

Apologies for the short diary, I will try to locate the transcript from today's show later. I am wondering what are the thoughts around the community on this.

Update: The transcript has just been posted and can be found here: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0807/13/le.01.html
BLITZER: One final question for you, Senator Dodd. Joe Lieberman, a lot of speculation he's going to speak at the Republican Convention, endorsing John McCain. He's been traveling all over the country with them. If in fact he does do that and he's your long- standing colleague from Connecticut, would you be among those Democrats in the senator that would strip him of his chairmanship, assuming the Democrats increase their majority in the U.S. Senate? DODD: He's not only my colleague, he's my friend. And Joe Lieberman does a great job on many issues affecting this country, a strong supporter of Democratic principles and values over the years and I would continue to be his friend and his colleague and I would not support an effort to strip him.

Dodd would keep Lieberman in Dem Caucus (none / 0)

Senate Dems are playing the same disgusting game they played with JoeBlo back when he betrayed the party in 2006. Back then they left Lamont to wither on the vine when Louseyman ran as a Republican, and now they're doing it to Obama as Kissin'Joe betrays his party again.

Whatever the outcome this fall, Joesuck needs to be kicked out of the Democratic Caucus come January.

See, that's just the thing. (none / 0)

I'd have to see the transcript to be sure, but I'm not certain if the moderator was asking Dodd if he'd ask for Lieberman to be immediately stripped of those positions - which would cause some serious chaos in a Senate where we don't really have a majority - or whether he'd ask for Lieberman to be stripped of those positions in the next Senate, where we're much more likely to have a secure majority with or without Lieberman.

I understand the game Senate Dems have been playing with Joescum all along -- and it only makes THEM look bad. He's the new Zell Miller and they need to assure loyal Democrats that he'll be shown the door in January.

I'd like to think that's what Obama told him that day when he cornered him on the Senate floor.

Re: Dodd (2.00 / 1)

It makes sense to deal with Lieberman for a few more months.  Lets not do anything rash, folks.

His time will come soon enough.

Re: Dodd (none / 0)

As much as I hate it, I don't think that it makes sense to trash Liebermann yet.  I don't trust the Republicans to play fair and I don't want to count on winning a big majority until we've got it.  If the Democrats fail to act then I have no problem with going after them.

No McCain in '08

He's looking out for his home state. (2.00 / 2)

You can't blame him - - it's constituent services, a senator's FIRST obligation.  BTW - the rest of the caucus does NOT have this excuse!

John McCain says he would stay in Iraq for 100 years? That's crazy talk!

I do believe he is in a difficult position. It was interesting that Lamont was a surrogate for him on one occasion in Iowa.

Why is Dodd (none / 0)

selling out progressives to pander to Connecticut?

The American people; they were for the war before they were against it.

Joeslime serves only himself. So, yes, we can blame him.

Y'know, here's an idea. (none / 0)

WHy don't we just move him to a different chairmanship? Can we do that? I wouldn't mind him so much if he wasn't working in military and intelligence assignments. Let's just stick him somewhere else.
