Help nix the Lieberman-Hagee love affair

In spite of the anti-Semitic rhetoric of Reverend John Hagee that was eventually uncovered and published on YouTube (now deleted), Joe Lieberman and two Congressmen are still attempting to give Hagee credibility as a supporter of Israel, in particular, the Likud faction that would deny Palestinians any rights to an independent state. Joe's right wing Neocon proclivities are widely known, but his willingness to sleep with a bigoted Islamophobe like Hagee is an embarrassment.

As a last minute attempt to bring these lawmakers to their senses, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) has issued this appeal, which I am sending along. If you are so inclined, please contribute by signing this petition from JVP's Campaign Director, Sydney Levy.

Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Representative Elliot Engel (D-NY) and Representative Mark Pence (R-IN) are scheduled to speak at the upcoming conference of Christians United for Israel (CUFI) - Pastor John Hagee's organization, which is dedicated to preventing a just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ensuring ongoing bloodshed for years to come.

At last year's CUFI conference, Senator Lieberman called Pastor Hagee a "man of God" who is "like Moses," one of the "most revered" Jewish leaders of all time. Such a comparison degrades our religious and cultural heritages. Pastor John Hagee, who has "prophetically" identified the anti-Christ as Jewish and claimed that Hitler was God's instrument to force Jews to go to Palestine, is a man for whom Jewish lives -- and Palestinian, for that matter -- are cheap; stepping stones on the path to Divine Glory. Pastor John Hagee has no concern for Muslims or for the truth, when he states that, "those who live by the Qur'an have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews... it teaches that very clearly."

Join Jewish Voice for Peace, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and Just Foreign Policy by sending an email to Senator Lieberman and Representatives Engel and Pence calling on them to cancel their upcoming speaking engagements and disassociate themselves from CUFI.

After you send this email, you will be asked to sign A Statement from concerned Christian and Jews as well.

Warmly,

Sydney Levy, Campaigns Director
Jewish Voice for Peace

Thanks.

Schmuck with a sense of humor. (2.00 / 1)

In passing I might note another effort to stifle Joe in the Senate in 2009 from LiebermanMustGo.org, passed on by Brave New Films.

Here's what you can do: Sign our petition today and tell the Senate Democratic Steering Committee to strip Lieberman of his leadership role in Congress. Then, e-mail this video to everyone you know and spread it on sites like Digg and elsewhere.

Recently in Talking Points Memo, Josh Marshall suggested that the best way to limit Lieberman is by encouraging the Steering Committee to render him powerless in 2009. Lieberman must go, and you can make that happen by donating to Brave New Films today.

Lieberman himself responded to this campaign. The Hartford Courant reported:

When asked about the new www.LiebermanMustGo.com Web site, Sen. Joe Lieberman said this afternoon that it certainly had the right to collect signatures demanding he be shoved out of his Democratic Party positions next year. But he said, "I think most people in this country are really tired of this kind of partisan politicking."

So, what's his plan to counter the petition?
Lieberman joked, "I'm not going to sign."

Ya gotta love it.

It was funny.  I'll give him that.

In many ways, Hagee is like Moses. He is trying to set up a situation that will lead to a period of genocide and racial purification like the one that took place after Moses led the Children of Israel to Canaan.

In his own mind, perhaps. I assume that's what you mean.

Yes, in his own mind. I'm not trying to suggest that he has the leadership qualities, or any others, of Moses.

Congrats, shergald... (none / 0)

you've actually written a diary worth recommending!  I'm proud of you.  (And no, that's not snark.  I really mean it.)

IMHO, Lieberman is a disgrace to the Senate, to the country, and to Jews everywhere.  Tipp'd and recc'd...oh, and sign'd as well.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were no rhetorical questions?

Go further and join the peace activists, i.e., become a member of JVP.

I'll have to read through their positions... (2.00 / 1)

in full before deciding on that.  So far, though, I like what I see!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Re: Congrats, shergald... (none / 0)

Well at least it's not hot of the newswire from Ramallah. That's a change. But Joe is an easy target...and in my opinion a shondah.

The problem is that he still votes solidly as a dem on social and labor issues. So it's hard to boot him out of the caucus.

In retrospect Al Gore ( who I adore) made three big mistakes that looked okay at the time, but...later...not so much.

1. Debating Ross Perot on NAFTA... and winning.

2. Having Donna Brazile running his campaign in 2000.
( she's has never won in any campaign - brazile shrum and penn should all be banished to an island for every four years)

and of course

3. Joe Lieberman.
