Where We Can Go from Here

(Proudly cross-posted at Clintonistas for Obama)

I know, I know. It's been a tough week for all of us who care deeply about our Constitution, the foundation of our republic. And yes, I know what's made this week tougher was Barack Obama's agreeing to this capitulation to Bush-Cheney. So what do we do now? Where can we go? How can we put this disappointment behind us?

Follow me after the flip as I discuss where we can go from here...

First off, I know some here have been uncomfortable seeing us argue over the FISA Amendments Act. But you know what? It's not always a bad thing when all of us don't agree with Obama on everything.

While I strongly disagree with Obama's stance on the final FISA Amendments Act, I'm glad that there has been open discussion of this here and at other progressive/Democratic communities. Obviously, many of us ARE distressed & disappointed over this. While we all understand that sometimes we have to compromise to get at least some of what we want, I just think that the Constitution is something we should NEVER compromise on.

And no, I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way. That's why
it's important for us to have an open discussion on this. After all,
haven't we all hated seeing how the Bush-Cheney regime has always
crushed dissent? And how the GOP "dittohead" footsoldiers never
question their own leaders on anything?

We're Democrats (and Independents, and Greens, and others, and even
ex-Republicans), and we're supposed to be better than that. We're the
ones who are supposed to be questioning authority. We're the ones who
are supposed to hold our leaders' feet to the fire. We're the ones who
are supposed to strive to make things better for everyone.

So are we all still united to elect Obama this fall? Sure. But will we
all agree with everything he does? No. And are we supposed to blindly
accept everything he says? I don't think so.

OK, so now we all understand the value of open discussion. But hey, open discussion doesn't get Democrats elected! I know that. That's why it's also important that we move on to working hard to ensure we don't see any more disappointments like this in the coming months and years.

And how can we do this? We can get involved with the Democratic Party in our communities. By electing more & bettter Democrats, we're doing our part to ensure we won't see any more massive failures to protect & defend our Constitution. So by volunteering and contributing, we can do a whole lot to take back our country.

Also, why not reward those who have been fighting the good fight all along? Help the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation fight this horrid FISA capitualtion in court. Believe it or not, we still have a chance to have our say in court. And since this bill is NOT a Constituional Amendment, we have at least a decent chance of overturning this heinous violation of our Fourth Amendment privacy rights.

Oh yes, and let's also remember to reward the great Democrats that stood with us the whole time? Remember Chris Dodd. Remember the Blue America candidates. Remember Russ Feingold. Remember Barbara Boxer. Oh, and remember Hillary Clinton! She didn't have to stand with us, but she did. She's showing her true-blue colors now as a progressive warrior. But hey, if you don't want to give there, give here.

And finally, let's not forget about our nominee. While he disappointed us on the final vote, Barack Obama did support all the important amendments that would have improved the bill. And as President, he's promising us that he will work to improve this legislation. So yes, let's hold him accountable & make sure he keeps his promise. And at the same time, let's all work our patooties off to ensure he becomes President so we can actually hold him to that promise! :-)

I am angry at Obama, but I don't feel betrayed by him, because I knew he was a compromising centrist all along. I was dazzled by Jack Kennedy in 1956 when I was 11; at almost 63 I am immune to the seductions of a pol pretending to be above politics. I have avoided saying "I told you so" to my grieving daughters who truly believed in him.

I am still sure that Obama would be about a million times better than McCain. I am a librarian; I value intelligence, rationality, education, reading,  writing. Obama is an excellent writer; McCain can barely read the teleprompter. Intelligent people are educable. It is up to us to continue to educate Obama about the important issues.

True... (2.00 / 4)

I am angry at Obama, but I don't feel betrayed by him, because I knew he was a compromising centrist all along.

That's also why I ultimately backed Hillary in the primary. I knew all along he takes the "post-partisan" stuff seriously while Hillary's more of a hard-core progressive warrior. And as a progressive warrior myself, that's what I like to see.

But anyways, we certainly can keep ressuring barack from the inside to fight a little more while continuing to advocate for him.

The resident pragmatist to kick my butt and remind me to get on the train! Thanks, Beltway. And don't worry, I'm already on board. Just don't get angry when I politely ask Mr. Conductor to ditch the old map for a better GPS. ;-)

Re: Where We Can Go from Here (2.00 / 2)

"It is up to us to continue to educate Obama about the important issues."

I think Obama knew what the issue was, and he did, as you say, chose the correct political decision.

He HAD to vote that way, or deal with perhaps MONTHS of attack ads in the purple states.

I hated that vote, but it is a rock in my shoe, compared to the toxic waste dump of the Republic party.

Sure, we need to hold his feet to the fire, but we also need him appointing a generation of district court judges not based on the idealogical criterion of the Federalist Society, as McCain will.

"because I knew he was a compromising centrist all along."

I think he may fool you a bit.

I'm in your age range, my mom dragged me around while she was doorbelling for Jack Kennedy (like the good irish catholic she was) and I have been waist deep in the political wars since.

And, I think, (perhaps wishfully on my part) that the problem with us in our generation labeling Obama as a centerist is generational context?

What does a millenial think "a centerist" position is, if they weren't formed in the crucible of the divergence of left and right America that we say, played by Nixon and Reagan into the southern stragegy that STILL dominates our politics today.

I think Obama simply belongs to the genertation behind us.

And, Obama is about to shatter then Southern Strategy, I would bet money on it.

Which will change the polical game for the first time in 40 years?

And I think, he is thinking beyond the left/right paridgm we grew up in.

Anyway, we shall see?

And at any rate, I have a wonderful smile on my face, cause I may win the best five dollar bet of my life.

My wifes boss is a smart as a whip black woman, lawyer with a degree from Georgetown, and talk about a type A personality?

She is a political junkie like me, and WAY BACK when this thing started, she asked me who I was backing.

When I said "Obama" she said, point blank

"White Americans will never put a black man in the whitehouse"

I said, "I got 5 bucks says you're wrong."

That bet is looking pretty darn good at the moment.

Re: Where We Can Go from Here (2.00 / 4)

The least worst choice is Obama.

And that's the best I can say about this whole primary process and the general state of the Democratic party.

I've been a star-struck, slavishly devoted Democrat for my entire life, but now I am bitterly disillusioned and feel quite used.

Nevertheless, there is still a shred of pragmatism in my being and that small shred will always favor the Democratic nominee over  John McCain.

I know, I know... (2.00 / 2)

We're all pretty depressed right now. But hey, it's not all bad this week. At least Obama did some good things as well that reminded us why he's infinitely better than McBush.

Re: Where We Can Go from Here (2.00 / 1)

The constitutional erosion has been perhaps my greatest passion, but I'm not at all disappointed in Baracks (meaningless) vote.

It was a Republican trap. If there was a attack between now and November Obama's vote would have been blamed.

I'm glad we haven't nominated a sucker.  Winning and then truly fixing FISA is far better that a meaningless gesture.

Re: Where We Can Go from Here (2.00 / 1)

Well said. Dissent for a legitmate reason should always be allowed.  I agree with your diary because you are strong/relentless on your position, but you can see the forest from the trees.  After reading more about the negatives of the new FISA amendment beyond the immunity, which I was always strongly against (but not sure on the ramifications of the other parts), I do see this as a crap bill.  I also agree that it could've been a landmine for Obama.  THat leads to another debate on sacrificing ideals for pragmatism, one that has been held numerous times so I won't go into it now.  Thankfully there is potenial for correction/revision.
Keep up the good work
