For Barack Obama (what can't a guy plug him once in a while, I've pluged over 30% of my potential congressional delegation and people in other states as well (the wonderful Darcy Burner and that is just challengers.)
may be a lack of passion from alot of people either because their candidate or punching bag are no longer in it.
has surged and the other progressive blogs (talkLeft OpenLeft and us) have lagged some, I threw in the last link to show that the people who are acting like (in Nom's words) Verruca Salt are not even on the map.
right now we are right in the thick of things, so i wouldnt equate any thing you are seeing now as definitive of the future.
but as a former media buyer, i will tell you that a day, week or even month do not constitute a trend. id be willing to bet that if you compare blogs like kos that alienated about half of its users to leave (as well as msnbc, etc) that they will see a significant dropoff in ad revenues over the next few quarters.
I am just trying to get a hypothesis for what is going on. This theory might fit, but you are right in that it is too early to say if it does or not.
your graph is dead.
based on your graph sg - it looks like all the sites listed have increased in usage - albeit kos is much larger.
in late May while the other blogs have been stationary.
but due to my background in media i looked at the trending over the the whole primary. and i believe - although dont quote me -that all the sites saw an uptick in the last 2 months with a dip in late may? this is from memory so i may be wrong.
The graphs expire fast it seem for people other than me...
illustrates how insanely massive dKos is compared to everywhere else.
That is odd...
The site to check this is alexa and I check the four 'national' liberal blogs (Dkos, myDD OpenLeft and TalkLeft)
Maybe it's because, for a variety of (unfortunate) reasons, MyDD users, with a bit of assistance from Jerome, decided it would be best to turn this place into a one-issue blog (the issue being Hillary Hillary HILLARY!!!).
Now that this issue is moot, all the great discussion one used to find here has long moved elsewhere. Those inclined to be interested in other issues have fled to where those issues are discussed, and those inclined to pout for a former candidate who has lost have set up shop at right-wing blogs like Flowbee's and Hillary's DeadEnders.
So really, who's left?
That said, I think this place will be fine in a week or two. It's just a nice summer weekend, that's all- people go outdoors!
sure blame it on Jerome.
Maybe you are not aware that he is not the only one that runs this blog.
I'm fully aware, thanks. I love Jerome, and have read him for years, but his actions over the past month or two pushed a LOT of Obama supporters on to greener pastures.
there was a good issue based diary today that i found.
http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/6/8/15163 7/4320
i agree that give it a couple of weeks and this place will either be hoppin' or deserted.
I hope you are right but I do doubt it a little unless we can offer something the other sites don't, TalkLeft will always have its niche due to its focus on legal issues. OpenLeft has Bower's analysis. What is our niche that makes us unique?
If traffic dies, I might go over to MNBlue...
Well for me, the attraction to posting, as opposed to simply visiting, MyDD is that the cast of regulars tends to be manageable in size, so you at least have an idea who you're talking to.
I can post a diary on Kos, and have 400 comments in 30 minutes, but I don't want to have to look at each individual's page to see who I'm talking to.
So I would think the edge here is there are solid front page posts with said front pagers often engaged in discussion, and there are detailed, but manageable, diary threads.
Seriously, I think once the post-Clinton hangover ends it winds up just fine. MyDD was never close to Kos in traffic, and that's ok.
i wouldn't go back to kos if you paid me...
BUT
I do have a diary I want to post, can't do it for fear of being banned since it isn't PRO obama....
SO
it's dead over here and going WILD on some of the new pro-hillary sites that have cropped us in the last couple weeks.....
I've already been warned twice here and get troll-rated every other comment because I'm not a good little dem and won't fall in line behind obama...
therefore - not much to say.
of the Wild new Hillary sites (like the confluence) and their traffic is lower than openleft. The only one that I know of that is hoppin is NoQuarter and I know of plenty of people who are doing internet black ops over there to disrupt, no to mention the lurkers checking in on the magical whitey tape.
there's a lot more than no quarter that have cropped up over the last week...
better not to say who/what they are because they are die-hard hillary supporters that can speak freely without having obama-people bug em...
there are also about 3-5 new hillarymccain sites too
"there are also about 3-5 new hillarymccain sites too"
Wow that sounds like tons of fun!
Thank god they made these sites, why didnt they make them a month ago?
Well if you're going to keep posting about "whitey tapes" and how you're not willing to vote for a Democrat, how is No Quarter a stretch for you?
Why WOULD you come to a Dem site, since you clearly are more interested in helping the Republican party out?
Dailykos is still a progressive blog. There's still a variety of issues being discussed and yes, there are Hillary Clinton supporters. Not the "Obama is a sexist race bater" types, but Clinton supporters nonetheless.
The 'Clinton protest' really had a sad effect. It essentially converted MYDD from a blog that supports the democratic agenda to a blog that supports Hillary.
but going along with your logic - then what did that make kos now? apparently there was a diary commending HRC supporters that stayed - 2, yes 2 were named!
apparently there was a diary commending HRC supporters that stayed - 2, yes 2 were named!
I'm not following what you're saying. Also, please link me to the diary in question.
she means this diary.
It essentially converted MYDD from a blog that supports the democratic agenda to a blog that supports Hillary.
to which i responded - then what does that make kos?
and i feel icky linking there, but here goes: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/6 /7/174521/7189/20/531873
Yes, because one diarist can only think of two Clinton supporters that means THERE ARE ONLY TWO?
I'm very active member of DK and I can't even pull a handful of screen names from memory.
Undoubtedly Dailykos had (and still has) way more Obama supporters. But the content still has been more diverse, and is so now. The fact that there has been so few Clinton supporters was their own damn choice. Generally a boycott is meant to punish an institution. And yet, here we are talking about Dailykos being as active as ever. So what was the point?
Honestly on MYDD I see so much whining and people playing the "sexism" card it's pretty sad. There ARE plenty of constructive diaries and posts to be sure. But as for the rest, what are you? Are you a Democrat or a Clinton worshipper?
For those who are hoping Obama loses... when you're so hooked on a person you don't know personally that you're willing to give the world a third Bush term.... you have problems.
about how slow it is here, but I'm not exactly doing much to fix the problem. I've always liked dKos, but I really prefer the smaller community here. I'll be disappointed if the regulars leave permanently.
I promise to post a (non-candidate) diary tomorrow night.
has a great format with helpful formatting tools and is great for learning news, but discussing stuff there is crap as things fly off the list (I have a 50 on my list and things last maybe an hour)
is to try to be within the first 10-15 commenters on a given diary. That way, there's a good chance someone will read and respond to your post. Personally, I pretty much ignore the comment threads. I read a few comments, give out a few recs, and move on to the next diary.
Very hectic place. I really enjoy some of the hidden comments over there, though. Ran into a real live McBlogger today (he even admitted he was a McCain supporter). I hope tons of them show up there and at MyDD. They're hilarious.
I would like to read that... :)
He's clearly a real McBlogger, who's bashing both Hillary and Obama, while touting John McCain's credentials. Most blatant GOP troll I've seen in awhile.
And here's another of his anti-liberal/pro-GOP rants.
I wish people hadn't HR'd him, though. I'd like to talk to some of these trolls, but he isn't a TU and probably can't see the responses to his comments. I think we should engage some of these people, you know? Might be fun.
and there oh so funny antics (followed by my fave mydder's) are the only things keeping me here.
We need to think of a way to keep this place lively. Obviously, people are here, they're just not being very active. It's like a lot of us are semi-lurking. What could we do to keep things interesting?
i think your graph was only for 3 months. I did a 6 month one. you can see that dkos traffic dropped alot in feb. probably cause of the walk out and boycott and the hatred. mydd and talkleft have grown alot. are they as pop. as dkos. hell no, but they are growing. dko is growing now too.,
[i cant post it, it doesnt show up. im not determined enough to fix it,]
Yeah Dkos has been growing constantly, at a pretty good clip, myDD has grown too but ancedotal evidence shows that it is slowing down, same with OpenLeft (don't know about TalkLeft law was never that interesting to me).
I am generally a lurker/commentor (3 diaries in 3 months). I really like the community here. It is small enough that I know who the good diarists are and who will leave substantive comments. I will try to be more active to try and keep things a'float.
I am not really a good writer and am not really interested in talking about myself. Maybe I can talk about the intersections of politics and chemistry.
dude that would be interesting.
chemistry + politics = a hotmess.
[hahaa.]
DKos reminds me of a really large mutual fund like Fidelity Magellen which becomes so big and has so much to invest it winds up buying everything and becomes a glorified S&P index funds. Okay, I guess most of you don't know what I'm talking about, let me put it another way.
At MyDD you can post a diary and be reasonably sure that it will still be there for at least a few hours. On DKos, if you don't make the rec list (and only a very small percentage do), if you check back in a half-hour or so your diary is gone or way, way down the list. It's just too big. And with the return of the prodigal Hillary supporters it'll get worse. Comment threads are impossible to get through in a normal lifetime. And, as we all know, comment threads veer off into unrecognizable directions very quickly. You don't need 600 comments per diary.
Put another way, MyDD is a high school gym, DKos is the Rose Bowl. Too big. As Yogi Berra would say, "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." MyDD is a neighborhood, DKos is the whole city.
I also take exception to the idea that DKos is all that progressive. I've read some pretty unprogressive diaries over there. Reality based community, not so much. MyDD is much more user- friendly, and, IMHO, sophisticated than DKos (This despite the occasional trollish behavior of some of the users).
As for Kos himself, I have lost all respect. Many here have been upset with Jerome for his advocacy of Hillary Clinton. But nothing Jerome ever wrote even approaches some of the vile, demeaning, misogynistic brand of Hillary character assassination practiced by Marcos in the last few months. He's just not what he was, if he ever even was what he was. I think it started with the Newsweek job. Sadly, Kos, much like KO (dead to me), has become what he has always railed against. These views have nothing to do with my support for Hillary's candidacy (now, of course, transferred to Barack). It's a cautionary tale. Often people will turn on you when they find it in their self-interest. Kos and KO may have backed your guy THIS time. Next time may be different. Take everyting with huge grains of salt and be prepared for disappointments. To put it simply, all political alliances and allies are temporary.
I prefer mydd over dailykos
much smaller community, so we get to know one another better. That helps when we start bickering, because we aren't so quick on the draw to maim each other (not that we don't, but we could be worse)
mydd has been around for a long time - so I am sure it will bounce back
Afterglow
don't use alexa to gauge anything accurately. it only tracks websites visited by people who use their spamtastic little toolbar.
sure, it can be a good tool to look @ overall trends, but never trust it's numbers.
for what it's worth please all you secret and not so secret and the ones who thought dropping the name would make a difference dkos trouble-makers trolls and fools, please go right on back. they poisoned enough of the blogsphere for the last few months, their passin will not disturb me at all.
I sent an email to Jerome bringing this up to him.
The main point I got to him was "Please save your site".
He doesnt need me or anyone to list the reasons, but I am sure he will have a no-reply "pretend its not there" response.
Oh well, I will hold dear memories of this site, and I will hop back every now and then but I think my job is done here and I need to check out DemocraticUnderground.com finally and head back to my family on www.theyoungturks.com
