Amnesty Request Diary (Update: Success!)

Update [2008-6-10 12:37:50 by really not a troll]: Success! Last night many of us were visited by the Admin fairy and had our rec/rates restored. Thank you MyDD! Let's celebrate by reccing some useful, non-meta diaries.

So, the primaries are over and some people still can't rec/rate. Instead of spamming all the admins, why don't we use this diary to request amnesty? This'll make it easier on the admins, who won't have to sort through their inboxes and won't have to hunt down our comment history (they can just click our usernames in-thread).

So, want rec/rate back? Post a comment.

Oh, and if you still have rec/rate, and want to get it restored to all non-troll users, please rec this. Thanks.

Update [2008-6-9 23:14:10 by really not a troll]:: Ironically, my first time on the rec list. Thanks! I'd thank you by name, but I don't have the ability to view who put my diary on the rec list right now. Admins, can we fix that so I can offer these fine users some proper gratitude?

THANKS to those with rec/rate who have kept this diary on the rec list:

Tips? (2.00 / 53)

I sense tips are unlikely, given the target audience, but if you feel so inclined and able, here's the jar.

You got a tip from me.
And a rec.

I think we all need to be able to tip and rec and promote good diaries that will focus our energies on the GE ahead.

Just my unimportant 2 cents :)

Here's a tip. For those who had their rec/rate unfairly taken way, get Firefox and the add-on Adblock Plus. Then, when you surf MyDD, Jerome won't get any ad revenue. Keep Adblock Plus engaged until you get rec/rate back.

Re: Tips? (2.00 / 4)

Not all Obama supporters lost rec/rate - and sometimes the ways in which one ended up tazed were pretty ambigious. The admins have always claimed that they were following a consistent set of criteria, but I'm more and more convinced that it ended up being a pretty haphazard affair.

Re: Tips? (2.00 / 1)

If you recommended a diary (perhaps a Bob Johnson diary) that Jerome wanted to boot off the recommended diary list, his method was to eliminate the rec/rate of everybody who recommended it, so their recommend would disappear and the diary would fall off the list.

I'm still a TU despite having a pretty robust attitude of doling out TRs and to Alegra, TD, linfar and Teresa - so I guess I was just lucky to have missed the key diaries that got people banned.  Actually, probably being in London the time difference was a big factor.  Anyway, I fully support an amnesty and hope it is done quickly before too many people give up on the site.

This goes far beyond rec/rate (none / 0)

There were also people whose posting privileges were revoked entirely merely for making a strong case against Clinton and/or for Obama -- and calling the site's host out on some of his less-reasoned judgements and decisions.

This includes the person who originally introduced me to MyDD. This person is a progressive Democrat originally from the midwest, now a local Democratic committeeman in New York State, and a very early adopter of this site... one of the most mild-mannered people I know, but also someone of great integrity, who would not agree to the pledge he was sent as a condition of continued posting abilities.

Such injustices should be undone now by the site's owners. They never should have happened in the first place.

Interesting.  I came here specifically because it was the place where the most fervent Hillary Clinton supporters seemed to post.  I still read and post more frequently at the DailyKos, and I read and post here.

I specifically came here because of the intensity of the Hillary supporting crowd.

I find it interesting when people say they won't post over there.  I've read what I find to be some pretty hilariously biased and pro-Clinton comments from Jerome over here.

I guess I don't really understand the mentality of leaving the place because they don't agree with you.

Yeah, whatever.

It was a cesspit in favor of John Edwards.

Dailykos was like the DailyEdwards until, and after he dropped out.

I came to this site, because there were some really funny, and really intense Clinton partisans.

We all have our own filters and lenses, and perhaps your lenses and filters allow you to see all the negative comments about Clinton as some sort of evil Kospiracy.  It would be possible to go there and pluck out hundreds of nasty comments about Clinton.  Just as it would be possible to come here and pull out hundreds of nasty comments about Obama (they would of course be relative to the number of comments on each site.)  If you're a Clinton partisan, it's simply easier to filter your way through negative Obama comments, just as an Obama partisan would find it easier to filter out negative Clinton comments.

An amnesty would be an admission of guilt, (2.00 / 4)

in that rating removal was a targeted attempt to silence Obama supporters. I'll be very surprised if everyone who got ratings taken away gets them back.

Re: An amnesty would be an admission of guilt, (2.00 / 3)

while I do think the privileged revocations were pretty badly biased, I doubt that it was a "targeted attempt". It seems more akin to an acknowledgement that, without some kind of check, Obama supporters would vastly outnumber the Clinton supporters (likely taking over most of the rec list), and there'd be a risk of a second Alegre strike.

Not necessarily. (2.00 / 2)

When you manage a forum like this, sometimes you just get tired of sorting through the crap.  They snap and smite away with the big heavy fist anybody in their line of sight.

My experience is that the best way to get amnesty is to privately send craven, boot-licking emails.  Undignified?  Sure, but, hey it works.

Re: Not necessarily. (2.00 / 2)

And here in proves **'s stupidity and short sightedness.

So what if Alegre did a second strike, SHE JUST did and could care less about the site she left behind.

So the solution to the wave in the internet based Democrats was to punish the majority and think they would take it or leave?

My prediciton is that *** will never grant amnesty because as Firewall said, its an outright admission and if you read the statements before he refused to admit to it, except he banned all those people for TRing Alegre.
And then by doing that you had "Is this Snark" posted for weeks.........

Re: This (2.00 / 3)

Even so he granted amnesty MONTHS ago, and he at least admitted to it.

Jerome said he would provide amnesty when the Primary was over.
Obama clinched last tuesday, HRC announced she would concede on Wednesday, and she officially concede/suspended and endorsed on Saturday.

Jerome might make some excuse about traveling but he knew the last day of the primaries, he knew the RBC committee rulings.

I have gotten used to the idea that Amnesty will never happen on this site.

Is anyone else starting to accept that after 2+months this is the way it is?

Should we just give in and all make new accounts?

Oh, no, no, no...It had nothing to do with that. It was merely some fair and unbiased policing of the site, and it just so happens that only the Obama supporters got out of line.

It was not making Obama supporters on this site a lesser class of member simply because they dared to support the wrong candidate, grew tired of utterly skewed site policies, and called certain administrators on their complete unwillingness to deal with distortions and lies if they were posted by the right members.

Re: Amnesty Request Diary (2.00 / 3)

There were several purges during the past months..
some like texdarlin were restored...
Two purges that that stand out on the other side were obvious...
A Bob Johnson post....and those who rec'd it
and the most obvious was when Jerome admitted to restrictions to those who "piled on" when comments were made to alegre's sarcastic "Is this snark"...

I do not know if it possible for MyDD to restore "privileges". However they should try.
It is also appropriate to maybe...just maybe take another look at what constitutes a troll or a hide rating. A troll rating should apply to those who visit here with their only intent to disrupt with GOP talking points..

It also would be in the best if a warning was given first and be specific. If someone is restricted or banned, that person should be given a specific reason...
There should be careful consideration given to mass actions...

The hide should apply to serious profane attacks on someone who posts a diary or comments...

Now that we are in GE mode...can we move forward?

If they can be taken away, they can be restored.  Again, Kos did it in April, Jerome can do it now.

Re: Amnesty Request Diary (2.00 / 3)

For having been caught up in Jerome's pissy protection of Alegre, I lost my rec/rate abilities. Would I like them back? Sure, especially given that Alegre has demonstrated that she's not really part of this community and was just using it to get attention.

Is it important to me? Not so much.

Now, perhaps that's not the best way to make an argument for having them restored, but there you have it.

the sad thing is I know I fly off the handle too easily.  I try to remain objective, but it is too easy to let things be personal.  Here we are all (except for a very small minority of real trolls like itsoverorc) are working for the same goal, a more progressive country.  We let our little family disputes grow into huge rages.  Of course there are those egging us on in that, but we should be able to be calmer.

As an old septuagenarian, who cast his first vote for Adlai Stevenson, I sense your controlled passion. If you are really a "student" I salute your restraint. Don't think I could have stayed so even-headed at your age. I am troubled that many who post here are obviously first-timers in the political scene and don't fully understand the political process. I sense that as we have become a culture of "celebrity" there is more attention to personality than issues and that is indeed sad.

Maybe we should (2.00 / 1)

Maybe we should cross post this at DailyKos and DemocraticUnderground.

This is important, because as I fear this site is in it's last days (as long as the current path continues)  I would like this stain to be lifted.

I think that if amnesty was awarded and Jerome came out, appologized and stated this site was returning to it's roots then there is a chance, but if not I am sure and I HOPE that another site comes by and fills the void.

I say hope because if this site does not fix itself, change and adapt for the future then I don't see why it deserves to run.

Re: Maybe we should (2.00 / 3)

Im glad to see you are so concerned for Jerome's feelings.

The fact that this site is in it's last days are quite evident.

By Jerome not providing amnesty people will always be talking about these super covert bannings and restrictions that were largely done to achieve partisan goals.

He will lose this site over this, Obama is the nominee and this site thinks it will survive as the "site that banned people just for supporting obama"

What kind of site has members warning each other to stay away from Alegre diaries if they want to keep their privledges?

Re: Maybe we should (2.00 / 2)

How is Jerome going to "lose" this site? MyDD has been around for years, and all Democratic blogs get huge upticks in their traffic during campaign season, then they go back to their normal numbers. I think Jerome's traffic will survive quite well with all the former posters from Dkos, anyway.
And for someone who is so tragically disappointed in the site, you sure do post here a lot.

Re: Maybe we should (2.00 / 2)

I am tragically dissapointed because it is sad to see such great commenters on this site saying:

"Wow its so dead, everyone else is leaving and so should I"

I feel I should leave because it does seem to be deep sixing.

By doing these "sweeps" Jerome turned this from  a Dem site to a Hillary site overnight.

How can we take the site seriously if we have to make new Screen names.

How can this site survive what looks like permanent banishment of 50 people who TR'd Alegre, a member that used this site then sold it out.

Do you think she/he feels one bit bad?

Does this site wants to be etched in history as the site that banned/restricted over 100 users over a Alegre and Bob Johnson?

And no, I really have no interest in a site that has the same "Why was I banned" diary every single day.

Its Lame.

Re: Maybe we should (2.00 / 2)

As one of the "pile-ons" who was stripped of rec/rate due to TRing an insulting and content-free troll-post, I feel the need to mention that I wasn't banished from the site. It didn't give me much faith in the people administrating the site, but frankly they aren't why I post here anyway. I read HuffPost for the front-pagers and dKos for the news posted by their front-pagers such as down-ticket races. I come to myDD for the discussions in diaries like these.

As for rec/rate, eh, whatever. They ought to scrap it anyway. They don't feel that a significant portion of their users can be trusted to use the system, and it's apparent that a significant portion of the users don't feel they can be trusted to administrate it. I think we're both right.
