MN DFL convention highlights and thoughts about Al Franken

The MN DFL convention is over and while I didn't get to go i did see a good portion of it online.  I'll combine these clips with some blog reactions and then analyze Al's endorsement and the problems he'll face.

http://www.TheUptake.com/ has a 4 hour highlight reel of the convention featuring most of the speeches.  Howard Dean gave an amazing speech.  If you want to check it out click on the menu button to the media player, then select On-Demand and go to MN DFL convention highlights.

Amy Klobuchar gave an pretty good speech, Steve Sarvi gave an okay speech, Tim Walz kicked republican rear end in his speech.  I didn't catch Madia's speech, and I don't think El gave one.

The big news at the convention was the Senate Endorsement battle.  Going in it looked like Al would be the favorite but that it would take multiple ballots, however Al had been taking a lot of hits about his comedy (both his work with SNL [the "drug and rape joke" to paraphrase Mikey Brodkorb of the RW site MDE I am so not linking there] and his work in Playboy (he wrote a very risque short story a good while ago).  His main competition was a Professor named Jack Nelson Pallmeier.  A third candidate Mike Ciresi dropped out a while ago as he had the charisma of Lieberman (I am kidding on the square here).  The two Twin Cities area reps (Ellison and McCollum) came out for Jack most likely due to these character problems of Al.  Tim Walz was rumored to be pushing for a no-endorsement vote to that Ciresi could jump back in the race (Walz is in a vulnerable district).

You can read the highlights of the day of the battle here:
http://www.mnpublius.com

So my thoughts:

I don't know if Al is damaged goods or not.  He has taken a lot of hits, but he gave a really good acceptance speech and a good apology speech (Mikey Brodkorb's opinion at MDE not withstanding).  If he doesn't get the race off character issues he will have trouble.  MN is a weird place as we elected Jesse Ventura.  It is hard to accurately tell the mood of the electorate.  If the race is on the issues then Al will win, if it is on Al's character he will lose.

I've heard rumors that Ciresi might jump back into the race and I don't know how I feel about that, he doesn't really motivate people, but he would neutralize the character issue.  I think I need some time to see how Al does in the polls if he can hold steady then he should manage to move beyond these issues eventually.  If he takes a hit then the vultures will circle and he will have a primary fight.

As of right now I back Al, but I want to make sure that he can overcome this rough patch.

kidding on the square. (2.00 / 1)

man that brought back memories.

I'm actually a little surprised.  Al Franken always struck me as a SMIDGE like a dirty old man.  I don't think he acts out on it but his comedy is definately tinged with it.

Still, I think he is also sincere in his desire to serve minnesota and follow in the footsteps of his good friend Paul Wellstone.

So good luck to him and MN.  Cspan will be a hell of a lot more entertaining with him in the senate.

Al should just run that skit from SNL with Tom Davis where they did competing ad's for some office, was funny as hell and could defuse a lot of the crap being slung.

So, could you elaborate a bit, SG, this endorsement does not mean he necessarily has the nomination? and if not, when is that determined?

Todd (none / 0)

In MN we have our primary for down ballot candidates in September, this was just for the party endorsement.  In MN we often have a primary battle to the endorsed nominee.  Mike Ciresi is thinking about jumping back into the race and challenging Franken.

BTW could you take a look at the user client8, He posted a video from TownHall and is trolling. (Thanks in advance).

Re: Todd (none / 0)

naw, I heard Mike Ciresi on NPR, he sounded as if he was leaving it open but it was unlikely,

had Fraken had a hard time getting the nod, then others probably would have jumped in, but as Franken won on the 1st ballot, I doubt Mike Ciresi will jump back in.

now to make sure Franken beats Coleman!

True that (none / 0)

I only heard the coverage on TheUpTake where they were speculating pretty heavily on Ciresi jumping back in.

He still might if Al's numbers tank so we need to make sure that Al doesn't tank.

Thanks, SG (none / 0)

So, when you say "character issues" I take it that's how it's being framed locally? Interesting that despite his troubles lately that he was so enthusiastically endorsed. He really made friends with the grassroots, I understand. However, am I sensing a skeptical tone from you about his candidacy?

He was getting (none / 0)

a lot of bad press about the tax issue.  The "rape" joke is something being pushed mainly by the local rightie bloggers.  He did get some bad press about the Playboy article.  Betty McCollum bashed him a lot over that.  That is what I am referring to as a character issue.  However he did get the endorsement of the DFL Feminist Caucus so that helped him at the convention.  Hopefully he can wrangle an Emily's List/NOW endorsement (that would really help him but this crap behind him)

He does have a masterful ground/outreach team.  That is the big reason he won the nomination fairly convincingly.  If you've taken a gander at his site you'd see that he does outreach really well online.

I am still backing him but I am more hesitant, I would like to see his polling be stable despite all of the crap being flung at him.  If that is the case I am back on board 110%, but if he can't overcome these issues I would like to see a candidate who can make a clean comparison with Norm.

Re: True that (none / 0)

I'm dubious about Al.  My only personal experience with him was at the MN state fair last summer.  Frankly, he came off as a complete A-Hole...  and I was pre-disposed to support him.  When I've heard him speaking on the stump, he comes off as angry and bitter.  And while I can identify with those feelings in this political climate, I don't think that they serve him well during an election.

I'll vote for Al in the general, but I'll have to think hard if Cirisi gets back in the race for the primary.

Isn't Jesse making some noise about entering the race?  I can't decide whether I think it'd hurt or help Norm if he does...

Re: not alwaysTrue that (2.00 / 1)

I saw Al speak in support of Sen. Bernie Sanders back in 2006 in Vermont.  He was pleasant and amusing, and a good time was had by all.

I also met him briefly during the reception following, and he didn't give off any horrible vibes IMO.

Public defender's office?  It still exists?  (I'm shocked and disappointed to see the recent press about the massive cuts in that area....)

Re: several "insiders" i talked to... (2.00 / 1)

well I will admit I am not as familiar with state politics as I am national, I tended to ignore the state level and focus on the national but i am switching that up now.

so I don't know much about Jack, but he did only get 35% of the delegates so I think now Al is safe in that I doubt he will get a serious challenger now.

Thank goodness Obama will be on the top of the ticket, he will increase youth turn out, and that will help franken

i must say i was shocked at the observation... (2.00 / 1)

(that jack would win the dfl endorsement), but i had no reason to disagree.  i wonder if it doesn't parallel what happened on the national stage, where party insiders thought one thing while the grassroots thought another.  if so, it's interesting that the grassroots' favorite won in both cases...
