McCain Remarkably Weak in West Virginia

It was a week ago today that I wondered aloud here at MyDD as to why in the world John McCain was up with ads in West Virginia, spending more than 7 percent of his media buys between the beginning of May and the middle of June in a state George W. Bush carried handily in 2004. Now we know why.

ohn McCain begins the general election season with an eight-point advantage over Barack Obama in West Virginia. The first Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of this general election match-up shows McCain attracting 45% of the vote while Obama earns 37%.

Neither man is terribly popular in the state. McCain earns favorable reviews from 48% and unfavorable ratings from another 48%. The numbers for Obama are 40% favorable and 57% unfavorable. Those figures include 26% with a Very Unfavorable opinion of McCain and 35% with such a negative view of Obama.

Now for as bad as McCain's numbers are in West Virginia, you can see that Barack Obama's numbers there are actually worse. And in elections between the unpopular and the more unpopular, it's generally the merely unpopular that win.

But these numbers suggest that although Obama is comparatively weaker in Appalachia than he is in other corners of the country, McCain isn't really the best person to capitalize on this situation. I think it highly likely that McCain will win West Virginia, as well as states like Kentucky and Tennessee. That said, if the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee are finding themselves spending money in the fall to ensure that they're winning states like West Virginia, this isn't going to be a terribly close election.

after all, we're probably more worried (2.00 / 1)

about the similar counties in Ohio and Pennsylvania.  If -- if -- McCain does poorly there relative to Obama, it's very good news.

Obama kicked off his GE campaign (2.00 / 1)

in the Appalachian part of Virginia yesterday. He is not ceding the region to McCain.

Re: Obama kicked off his GE campaign (2.00 / 1)

It's like what Obama did to Clinton in PA--sure he'll win the state, but because of his fundraising he will force McCain to pour money into a "Safe" state and break him financially.

Or does anyone think that Obama can't out-fundraise McCain+RNC now that the primary is over?

Re: Obama kicked off his GE campaign (none / 0)

I don't think Virginia is a lock for McCain. Far from it. Democrats have been winning at the state level for some time now and I think it's ripe for the picking at the Presidential level.

Re: Obama kicked off his GE campaign (none / 0)

Northern Virginia is Blue. Richmond's Mayor is Doug Wilder, America's first Black Governor.  November is going to be a battle between the places I just mentioned vs. western Virginia (minus Charlottesville, very liberal town) and Hampton roads, where there is a HEAVY military prescense.

There is where the state of the war comes into play. If Iraq is going badly, then Obama will win.

Re: McCain Remarkably Weak in West Virginia (none / 0)

I think we will see the Clintons camped out in Appalachia from now until the GE.  That combined with Obamas undoubted monetary advantages may net him some states, or at least force St John to play defense.
p.s. Don't want this comment to be perceived as anti-Obama.  I just think that this is where the Clintons can be most helpful.  I fully expect that African American voting is going to be off the hook, so if he can bring his numbers up in the more rural areas some of these states will really be in play.  Obama 2008!

If he comes to Appalachia (none / 0)

He can make it competitive. If he really tours West Virginia and gets to know some of the voters the way Hillary did, Obama can actually win West Virginia. I've believed this all along - Appalachian voters go for the familiar. They want to be comfortable with you before giving you their vote. By avoiding the state Obama allowed West Virginians to form the worst conclusions about him.

Starting in Bristol, Virginia was great. He can minimize his losses in SW VA, and possibly put WV in play. He might even minimize his losses in historically Republican East TN; Harold Ford did surprisingly well in East Tennessee, so it's not out of the question that a black Democrat could put Tennessee in play. Kentucky will be hardest of the three.

"By avoiding the state Obama allowed West Virginians to form the worst conclusions about him."

He was just being nice to Hillary since he knew the nomination was a wrap. And now he can go into the state not being way behind, with a clean slate, and introduce himself on his own terms.

Re: McCain Remarkably Weak in West Virginia (none / 0)

So much for the argument that Obama wouldn't be competitive in states that he lost to Clinton. He lost WV by 41 points and he's behind McCain by only 8.  A Virginian on the ticket would be very helpful.

Obama Stronger than Kerry in West Virginia (none / 0)

I think the headline should be that Obama is polling better than Kerry in West Virginia, where Kerry lost by 13 points.
