The Lady Has Class

Hillary Rodham Clinton just sent the following letter out to all of her supporters:

I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you.

On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.

I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee, and I intend to deliver on that promise.

When I decided to run for president, I knew exactly why I was getting into this race: to work hard every day for the millions of Americans who need a voice in the White House.

I made you -- and everyone who supported me -- a promise: to stand up for our shared values and to never back down. I'm going to keep that promise today, tomorrow, and for the rest of my life.

I will be speaking on Saturday about how together we can rally the party behind Senator Obama. The stakes are too high and the task before us too important to do otherwise.

I know as I continue my lifelong work for a stronger America and a better world, I will turn to you for the support, the strength, and the commitment that you have shown me in the past 16 months. And I will always keep faith with the issues and causes that are important to you.

In the past few days, you have shown that support once again with hundreds of thousands of messages to the campaign, and again, I am touched by your thoughtfulness and kindness.

I can never possibly express my gratitude, so let me say simply, thank you.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

So to everyone who said (and may still be thinking) that Hillary Clinton is ANYTHING other than a steadfast Democrat, please read her letter.  She is committed, as she always said she was, to making sure a Democrat is elected in November.

Let's let the vitriol die down.  Let's realize we're on the same team.  Let's come together.

I want to thank Hillary Clinton: you made my dream of seeing a woman as a serious contender for the White House come true.  We didn't get there this time--but we will.  And I hope when that time comes, I will be privileged to be able to vote for you.

Update [2008-6-5 5:1:17 by aurelius]: Thanks to all the gracious Obama supporters who have commented in this thread. I feel better than I did earlier in the day. Let's keep the good feelings 'rollin!

Yeah, who was that guy?  I thought it was some sort of public service announcement about the need for more money being put toward the welfare of the elderly, who instead wander around and say strange things.

No, Hillary, thank you. (2.00 / 5)

Dear Senator Clinton,

It has been a tremendous honor to have been one of the record number of Americans who voted for you in this primary. I have never been as proud to support a political candidate as I am of supporting you.

You have inspired me, and I suspect millions of others, with the depth of your courage, perseverance, sacrifice, love of country, and dedication to our shared vision of America. You carried the banner for the poor, the uninsured and underinsured, and the forgotten and invisible among us. You continued even as the privileged and the elite demanded you quit, and endured the derision and outright hatred of many who opposed you. At times their animosity wore me down, and convinced me that you should surrender. But you kept going. After being counted out, you prevailed in contest after contest, and ended the campaign with more votes than any primary candidate in history. You have earned my deep and lasting admiration.

I hope that when the time is right, you will again run for President of the United States. I promise that you will have my support once again, and this time, I hope to be there wishing you well on that January morning when our country will be fortunate enough to have one of its finest citizens as President.

Yours sincerely,
OrangeFur

That was surprisingly gracious.

I am looking forward to Saturday and in the future to regaining my respect for the Clintons whom I once so admired. This is an important and wonderful first step.

We're going to get together (none / 0)

and usher in a wave of Blue in November.  I have no doubt that Hillary and Bill Clinton will put their hearts and souls into getting Barack Obama in the White House.

I'm really hoping that he picks her as his running mate and that they can walk through the door together--Imagine having a black man and a woman, for the first time in the history of this republic, walk into the White House--together.  I get a little misty eyed just thinking about it.

Re: We're going to get together (2.00 / 1)

I have to say a unity ticket doesn't look half shabby to me. It is amongst my top three ideas for VP (the other two being Richardson and Clark).

Truth be told, 80% of my anger is directed at Bill, rather than Hillary. Some of his off-color remarks during the campaign season were atrocious. No one denies he is a master politican and he should have been an enormous asset. Somewhere along the way, I think, emotions got the best of him and his famous temper couldn't help but display itself. It was only when Bill was told to keep his yap shut that Hillary was truly able to find her own voice and enter into a comfortable groove.

She has run a tenacious campaign and you should be proud of her! She has shown to girls everywhere like my niece that women can be whatever they want to be -- even the President. :)

I think Bill got his back up (none / 0)

a little too much at times defending his wife-he really wanted this for her.  I heard a great idea floated for what to do with Bill:  have David Patterson (Gov of NY) appoint Bill to Hillary's Senate seat if she becomes the Veep.  I think it's a great idea.  John Adams went back to the Senate after his presidency and did great work.  I can see Bill as the next Liberal Lion of the Senate :)

Re: The Lady Has Class (2.00 / 2)

I know you meant well, but there was nothing surprising about it. The caricature that's been painted of her bears no relation to the truth.

Re: I'm Thinking EXACTLY The Same Thing! (2.00 / 1)

Do you consider Obamabot an insult?  I've never used it--okay, I used it once at the big orange blog whose name I dare write--because I thought it implied that Obama supporters were blind robots or something.

Oh, and as they say, great minds think alike!  I'm all about trolling for Bob Barr!  Where do we go?

to be an insult. Or was. Now it's kinda moot and reclaimable. Clintonistas and Obamabots are in it together - Democratistabots or something...

And we'll figure out how to support Barr in his quest to siphon off Repub votes!!!

Re: I'm getting there. (none / 0)

You know honestly...I'm not there.  Yet.  I will more than likely vote for him over McCain, for the simple reason that my children can't afford another Republican administration.

I hope to get there, and be able to cast my vote for him w/out holding my nose, and at least enjoy casting my vote.  But right now I'm not there.  I hope to get there before November...but right now I'll just focus on working and supporting the really important down-ticket races.

Re: The Lady Has Class (2.00 / 4)

That is a very class letter.

Despite all the criticisms of Hillary Clinton made  by Obama supporters, it really is important to have his candidacy endorsed by her, one of the giants of the Democratic party.

It feels great that democrats are beginning to remember that we are colleagues, not opponents.  It was a pleasantly jarring moment seeing Lisa Caputo, Dee Dee Myers, and Paul Begala together on Larry King enthusiastically pledging to campaign for Barack Obama.

Party is already starting to unite and coalesce.  Saturday should be an amazing celebration of this historic democratic primary race.

Thanks. I suppose I should delete my diary - if I knew how! I did not see yours while composing mine. Todd has posted the letter on the front page. May the only troll smiting we need to do be that craven man running as the Bush apologist for the experiment where they don't tell people they are actually being harmed because they only care about the results and not the soldiers or people or innocent victims they kill and maim.

John McCain is a liar. Erratic, poor judgment.

Cheers to smiting repuglican trolls :)  (I think there's one lurking in this very diary--unless he's finally been HR'd back to his bridge!).

Reading this is balm for the soul.

Nothing in this life can be done without allies. No one does anything alone.

I pity poor John McCain when he reads Hillary's letter.

Thank you Senator Clinton.
