Now, MSNBC goes after Obama

And so it begins.  MSNBC, affiliate of NBC, subsidiary of GE, one of the cornerstones of the military industrial complex, and one of the nation's largest military contractors, convenes its Wednesday morning 8 am political panel, Mika, Joe, Chris and Pat.

Chris Matthews, done with beating up Hillary (for now), starts on Obama:  Obama's "love of country" is "conditional", a "transaction" based upon "what it's done for him".  Obama doesn't "get" the "patriotism of the working class"  Obama's church affiliation and later disaffiliation were purely "cynical" and "political".  Obama appeals to the "upper end" and "the poor" but can't relate to "the middle" "the working class" "the guy who's proud to be an American".  They see "no evidence of his ability to connect with the average man" as opposed to Obama's "exotic life style".

Classic rope-a-dope.  Now that their primary target is tired and spent, we can watch how quickly all the Hillary-haters revert to form, and slowly begin their inevitable trek back to the status quo old white guy Republican ticket (because McCain would "pull off to the side of the road and give you a lift if your car broke down at 2 a.m.")  I guess that's NBC's new "who'd ya' wanna have a beer with test".

Prediction:  All those in media and industry who opposed Bill Clinton and Al Gore and John Kerry have not changed their stripes or their opinions.

We need to shore up our base and unify NOW for the inevitable onslaught, no matter how distasteful some might find it, and no matter how much some might feel it tarnishes their victory (unless they want that victory to be pyrrhic).

Oh I don't know, maybe from watching MSNBC?  Or do you call Chris Matthews saying:

It's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often.

criticism?

Re: Hmmm (none / 0)

You must have missed Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan beating the "Obama is an elitist and has a white working class problem" drum for the last two months. Oh and did you miss the Rev. Wright coverage?

Obama has been cut NO slack in the media. Saying it is just making excuses for Hillary losing.

Re: Now, MSNBC goes after Obama (2.00 / 1)

Yes.  They just turned on him didn't they?! Before today, the media laid out rose petals for him everywhere he went.

Chris Matthews is a tired hack who just can't shut up.  He will trash anyone just to hear himself speak.

by rf7777 on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 09:21:19 AM EST

Well, it IS Chris and Joe (2.00 / 1)

Chris Matthews says whatever he feels will get him noticed at any given time, and Joe Scarborough is a Republican.  Pat Buchanan... well, you know about him already.

Of that group, the only one voting for Obama is probably Mika.

Obama has had luck in controlling the media narrative even in a hostile environment (Wright, anyone?).  With some dedication and elbow grease we'll get through this.

I only caught about 20 seconds of them this morning.  Too busy watching the Obama speech from last night.

Buchanan (2.00 / 3)

went on his "He won't win Pennsylvania" rant and she agreed with him.

She hinted that she saw South Dakota as a bad sign for Obama going into the GE.

MSNBC's main agenda was to get rid off Hillary! (2.00 / 2)

Except for KO I would expect quite a few anchors would trash Sen. Obama. Most of them are Republicans. Don't mistake their hatred for Clintons as "Love" for Obama!

I thought the same thing (2.00 / 1)

I didn't expect them to stay in the tank for Obama.

and had Hillary somehow won then nomination, they would've beat her into the ground.

BINGO!!! (2.00 / 1)

Now that Obama is the presumptive nominee until he's confirmed in Denver, and NBC/MSNBC achieved their goal of humiliating the Clintons, it's Obama's turn! Matthews has repeatedly said that he voted for both Reagan and Bush. He did the same routine with Dean in 2004. He's untrustworthy as is Olbermann!

Media sucks (2.00 / 2)

They suck harder than the hardest sucking machine ever in existence (whatever that is).

I already saw it a couple of months ago, when "moderate" conservatives like David Brooks wet themselves about Obama when the Republicans had yet to crown a nominee.  But once McCain, their hero, became their nominee, the shift towards "honor and duty" McCain and away from "elite" Obama was unmistakable.

I'm surprised Chris "tingle up my leg" Matthews could turn this quickly.  But McCain has cultivated many relationships with the media in the past couple of decades, and the media love him.  A "maverick" in the party, "principled", etc. etc..

I saw boycott these stupid talkshows on cable news.  I haven't turned my dial onto MSNBC in quite a while, and I think it's made me healthier and a less agitated person.

Matthews turned on Obama in Pennsylvania (2.00 / 1)

The largest effect that "bittergate" had was to sour Chris Matthews, who is the self-appointed champion of poor Pennsylvania folk, on Obama.

He started towing the Clinton working-class hero message immediately.

He's oscillated a little since then, as he is wont to do, but you can't count on Matthews for anything but inconsistency.

Re: Eh (none / 0)

It's also thought to originate from the British House of Commons.

"The longest-running use of the phrase, often mentioned by tourist guides, is from the British House of Commons where sword-strapped members were instructed to stand behind lines that were better than a sword's length from their political rivals. Thus the cry to "toe the line!" was echoed to return order to the House and to quell a potential mortal conflict."

Funny (2.00 / 0)

I heard each and every one of these slams against Obama --- from the MEDIA --- many, many times before last night.

What makes them any different NOW than they were when Der Buch'er, Tweety, and slappy joe were bloviating on the same topics, using the exact same words back in March, April, or May?

This morning was nothing new.

Keitho will always be in the tank (2.00 / 5)

MSNBC has turned into a circus.

BTW, I hear Keitho is a DKos blogger...Heh :D

"Keith Olbermann Diary"

And, yes, if I'm going to step out from the cool, comforting environs of the shadows, I'd rather spring forward to pimp the book or the newscast.
But, having now read a (mercifully few) claims here that I'm a) attacking Clinton, b) burying Edwards, and c) clobbering Obama, I feel the need to mention that I truly don't have a preference. I am tilting in no direction, sending out no subliminal message, and thwarting no truth....

In reference to "not having a favorite," I say BS.

Or rather, he had respect for all the candidates then.  One of them lost his respect since.

What? (none / 0)

What reason would he have to have a favorite in January?  He's just a pundit.  He didn't know that Obama would become the presumptive nominee then.  He didn't even know if he'd make it to Super Tuesday.

He could have liked Obama, but that doesn't mean that he was against Clinton.

Keith likes to call out hypocrisy.  Sadly one of the campaigns gave him a lot to work with this time around.

pundit - A source of opinion; a critic: a political pundit.

What difference does that make? When you're in the tank, you're in the tank.

Re: Now, MSNBC goes after Obama (none / 0)

Nah, that's the same old Matthews/Scarborough "regular guy" (hint hint, I mean white people) bullshit, nothing new to see there

They're going through the motions, but they watched McCain's and Obama's speech one after the other last night just like the rest of us, and you can see the "whoa!" in their eyes

Sure they'll go after him, and I don't know what makes any of you think they haven't gone after him a lot harder than they've gone after Hillary (or god knows McCain) already with the race stuff, and especially the patriotism stuff, which we all know is code for the race stuff

Remember: we can't trust the media and that's why we built this alternative, so let's not despair when they do their usual bulls*it

by fightbull on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 09:33:54 AM EST

And they will have a field day with him - kicking OB from goal to goal!
by M1513 on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 10:46:05 AM EST

Re: Now, MSNBC goes after Obama (none / 0)

Nonsense. You think MSNBC hasn't talking about Obama's difficulties connecting with working class people before? Discussing a candidate's vulnerabilities is very different from smearing him/ her. I'm watching right now and the coverage for Obama is fairly glowing.

I'm amazed at how many people buy into this bait and switch idea of the media "making" Obama the nominee and then turning on him in favor of McCain. Put your tinfoil hats down for a sec and realize the media is way more complex than that. Talk to any right-winger by the way and they think the media has always been completely left wing and that they are all in the tank for Obama.

by animated on Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 12:58:25 PM EST
