Hillary's speech last night as a clever way to unify the party

I've been a very strong critic of Hillary Clinton's campaign tactics, and I was very dismayed by what I heard from her last night.

Yet, as I see the events unfold today, I want to provide a more generous, positive interpretation of what Hillary is doing and what she really wants.

Here's my theory - she gave her "victory speech" last night, raised the issue of being VP, threatened to use her 18 million supporters as a bargaining chip, as a clever way to unify rather than divide the party.  She's basically taking one for the team.

She also knows that her hardcore supporters really believe that Obama must put her on the ticket, but she doesn't really want it and knows Obama doesn't want it, either.  So, how does she make it impossible for her to be VP?  By acting ungracious, not conceding, imply that she's willing to take the fight to the convention, have Terry McAuliffe introduce her as the next president.  And the result?

Her own supporters have come out today to criticize Hillary's seemingly unseemly campaign for the vice presidency.  More of her supers have switched to Obama.  Essentially, by being unreasonable about the VP slot, she is giving cover to her supers to switch on over to Obama.  I'm thinking of Ed Rendell, Hillary Rosen, Barbara Boxer, Charlie Rangel, etc.

And here's the important effect of these very high profile Clinton-ite defections.  It makes it much, much harder for her diehard supporters to claim that Obama and his male allies are denying her what she deserves, the VP slot, because of sexism.   It's pretty hard to make this argument when really loyal Clinton-ites like Rendell and Rosen publicly say that they don't think Hillary can bargain for the VP, and that she shouldn't use her supporters as bargaining chips.

Basically, she's laid down the foundations for her to concede in a way that diffuses some of the fighting energy among her core base.  Additionally, look what's happening - she's actually unifying the party!  Clinton and Obama supporters are indeed coming together behind Obama, and doing it much more quickly, perhaps, if she had been gracious and conceded last night, when a lot of her supporters still have very strong, raw feelings.

By being the "bad girl," she diffuses that energy, and gives even more reason for the dem leaders, Pelosi, Reid, and Dean, to pressure the supers to move more quickly to coalesce around Obama.  And that is what's been occurring.

I'm not sure I completely buy this theory, but, it's plausible, especially since all signs point to her shutting down her campaign and all signs point to her being supportive of Obama.   It makes a lot of sense, and I'm the first one to recognize that this is a kind of brilliant move that only the Clintons could pull off.  Essentially, she's using triangulation for the good of the party, where she is playing the role of the extreme third party to bring her supporters and Obama supporters together.

If this is in fact what she is doing, I give her a ton of credit.  She's actually sacrificing her own public image for the sake of the party.  And if I'm right, she will conceded very soon and in a very gracious and enthusiastic fashion.

We'll see what happens.  But, even if Hillary isn't intentional taking one for the team, the effect has been, nevertheless, to unify the party.

Hillary is conceding Friday (2.00 / 6)

Your diary is insulting to me a supporter of hers. I don't know how you Obama supporters think you can do this without us, but whatever.

Trash away!

Could you please provide us with some specifics as to why you feel insulted by this argument?

Honestly, I'm not trying to be insulting to Clinton supporters.  I'm actually saying what Hillary is doing is for the good of the party.  And if this is what she is doing, I commend her for it.

As phoenixdreamz said, (2.00 / 1)

That supports my theory.  Hillary is too smart and too politically savvy not to know how her speech last night would have been received.  So, I can't imagine that she gave that defiant speech knowing she'd concede two days later.  I think she gave that speech to speed up the unifying process.  Good for her.

You should take this down (none / 0)

Or eidt it to make clear you aren't trashing Sen. Clinton.  I am didn't prefer her in the primaries but it is over.  Even if the ABC news thing isn't true, she is suffering super delegate defections that will make carrying it to Denver pointless.

Is your comment directed at my diary?

No... (none / 0)

... at the comment I was replying to.

It's kinda weird seeing folks upset about a diary that's claiming that Hillary is selflessly burning her mana to promote party unity.

Re: You should take this down (none / 0)

Did you read my diary?  I am saying that Hillary Clinton is actually deliberately facilitating the superdelegate move to her, thereby undercutting the whole take it the convention energy among her base.

But, point taken, I can see how my title could be taken the wrong way.

I disagree with your diary (none / 0)

Clinton had some very kind words for Obama last night. The reason why she didn't concede last night was that after a long primary fight, and a victory in South Dakota, she wanted her supporters to feel good for at least one more night. In addition, she wanted to reaccess her situation.

By conceding on Friday, Clinton will be doing something unprecedented in the modern primary era. No other runner-up in a closely contested primary election has conceded this early. Humphrey (72), Brown (76), Reagan (76), Kennedy (80), Hart (84), and Jackson (88) all continued the fight to the convention. (We haven't had a close primary fight since 88) Moreover, no one ever told these men to give up the fight. Traditionally, the runner-up and nominee negotiate the exit strategy by talking about convention speeches, the vice presidency and payment of campaign debts.

Now you might argue that there was pressure on Huckabee for him to drop out of the race this year. But Huckabee didn't even come close to McCain this year.
