So a number of very prominent diarists here at MyDD have apparently come to the conclusion that they are going to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August to participate in the process of choosing our party's nominee...
Well...although I'm neither a pledged nor an "automatic" (I love you, Harold Ickes) delegate to the 2008 DNC Convention (look out...2012 here I come!), and have no press or media credentials (or any redeeming value whatsoever...) I have decided that I can't pass up such an historic opportunity myself!
I've never met anyone from MyDD in real life before. But so many bloggers on this site have been saying they are going to Denver recently, I can't imagine we wouldn't run into one another! See me in Denver? You guys are darn right you'll see me in Denver!! Although, I should make it clear...I won't be going to protest or call for a floor fight or anything quite so dramatic...I'll be organizing for a much, much bigger fight ahead.
You see, I'm going to help organize with the College Democrats of America, who will be having a convention nearby at the University of Denver. College campuses throughout the country are under attack as professors are losing academic freedom and the cost of birth-control at reproductive clinics on campus is spiraling out of control. I'm going to talk about Senator Obama's plans to bring the cost of college tuition down through targeted tax breaks and make financial aid more readily available for all Americans by streamlining the FAFSA program. Obama and Clinton chapters have been created all over this country in recent months, and we're going to be organizing to defend the rights of all young people, regardless of party and politics!
I'm going to make the rounds at Union organized events in the city, finding out more about how we can work together to create a coordinated campaign to grow our wages, create new jobs, and provide healthcare for our working families. I'm going to be hearing about Senator Obama's plan to provide healthcare to every American who wants it (and Senator Clinton's ability to steer healthcare initiatives forward). I'm going to be hearing about Senator Obama's push for tax cuts for the middle class and new investments in an alternative energy infrastructure, creating green collar jobs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
I'm going to talk women's issues with female Democrats and former Clinton supporters. We'll talk about the future of the never-ending fight for women's reproductive rights, privacy, how to move forward with organizations that fight for all women (even those Republican women and pro-candidate partisans who either disagree with, or don't care about, reproductive rights) like NARAL and Planned Parenthood. We'll talk about new strategies for electing more women to higher office (like Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the first-ever Female Speaker of the House) and how to coordinator these strategies with the efforts of groups like Emily's List and NOW. And we'll talk about how comfortable I will feel with a staunch lifetime advocate of women's rights like Senator Obama at the helm of our country, appointing right-minded women's advocates to the courts and ensuring the support of all Federal agencies in the protection of reproductive rights. Women are going to be organizing to support Senator Obama all over this country, and I look forward to helping organize these efforts in whatever way I can.
Perhaps we'll go on a bus tour of downtown Denver together? Or maybe we could hang out at the various media and delegate gatherings which are open to the public at all the different hotels? What do you think, Alegre? Perhaps we'll go see a ball game at Coors Field or perhaps you'll let me buy you a drink on a Denver pub crawl on the 16th Street Mall downtown? How about it TexasDarlin? Perhaps we'll support the arts with a visit to the Denver Art Museum or the Denver Botanical Garden? All of the above sound great to me!
So for all of the MyDD diarists who promise to be in Denver for the DNC Convention...
I only have one, joyous, energetic response.
I can't wait to see you there!!!
