The Details On Michelle Obama's Alleged Whitey Rant

Alright, Hillbuzz has the story though I have no doubt there site will be overwhelmed. Here's the link:
http://hillbuzz.blogspot.com/2008/06/wha ts-on-michelle-obama-rant-tape.html

And here's the text:

The Michelle Obama Rant Tape was filmed between June 26th - July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church: specifically the Women's Event.

Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.

Bill Clinton spoke during the Conference, as did Bill Cosby and other speakers, but not at the panel Michelle attended.

Michelle Obama spoke at the Women's Event, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant --- his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems.

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on "whitey", and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that's when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who's seen this.

The "tape" is a DVD that Trinity United sold on its website, and possibly offered free for download up until March 2008 when Trinity's site was scrubbed and the DVDs were no longer offered for sale.

This outburst happened just one month before the 2004 Democratic Convention, when Barack Obama delivered the keynote address.

This is pretty specific info and should be easy to affirm or debunk. We all look forward to resolution.

Re: The Details On Michelle Obama's Alleged Whitey (2.00 / 7)

The idea for the right wingers here is not to actually produce a tape of Michelle Obama saying inflammatory things about "whitey."  The idea is to convince everyone that such a tape exists... by then the actual tape doesn't even matter.  It's about assassinating her character with rumors so often that whether or not the rumors are true becomes irrelevant.

Oh, yes. I read a comment on hillaryis44 the other day where the poster said that it doesn't matter if it's true just as long as the story is out there. Of course I was appalled that a purported Clinton supporter would be just fine with that.

It's a classic whisper campaign.  Very slimy. Karl Rove used it in a lot of campaigns; it's his classic tactic.

It's a whisper campaign that has been turned into a delusional ranting and raving campaign.  I don't know whether it's better to ignore this lunatics or tell them to put up or shut up.

Either way, it's depressing to see so many partisan fanatics hang all of their hopes on the destruction of the Democratic nominee.

Re: The Details On Michelle Obama's Alleged Whitey (2.00 / 1)

Here's my question:

While the Swift Boat allegations were completely false, they got out there unchallenged for long enough to throw the election to George W. Bush.

The Obama is a Muslim smear e-mail, which as I understand probably started from the same source as this pile of horse manure, got out there and around the world to the point that there's a lot of people, including my dumb as a post stepmother, who believe it.

Shouldn't we be getting out in front of this story and pushing what a ridiculous allegation it is so that when people are on the receiving end of this whisper campaign they know to say "That's retarded?"

The other day the claim was that Michelle Obama railed against "whitey" for Katrina but this date is before Hurricane Katrina.

BTW, does it make any sense for Michelle Obama to rant against Bill Clinton during the summer that Barack was running for Senate?

This doesn't add up. Cut the rumor mongering.

Re: The Details On Michelle Obama's Alleged Whitey (2.00 / 3)

Makes no sense. Also that conference in question was NOT held at Trinity, but at a Chicago hotel as someone noted above.

There was breathless rumor-mongering about this when Larry Johnson and Susan Hu (formerly of this site) hinted they were releasing the tape last weekend, and of course nothing happened.

Apparently someone went on Fox and Friends and said the tape was coming out today - nothing.

There is no tape, rather a rumor perpetuated by Republicans and Hillary diehards, just like the Obama Muslium rumors.

Re: The Details On Michelle Obama's Alleged Whitey (none / 0)

I went to the link in the diary and also found this

UPDATED: It seems really easy for Chicago local media, especially, to determine whether or not this is the right tape of Michelle Obama. All they need to do is pull the tape from this 2004 Conference (particularly the panel Michelle was on), which should be readily available (since this was a very large multi-day event). All a journalist needs to do is watch this tape: if this is not the right one, they'd know immediately and this issue would be debunked. But, logically, this seems to be the most likely source of the tape people have been talking about at NoQuarterUSA.net

This is a truly bizarre statement. Why would the Chicago media make tapes of all the panels at a PUSH conference? And since this was the summer that Barack ran for Senate, if such a tape existed, it would have been news then and he never would have gotten the nomination for his Senate seat.

So the burden of proof is on Michelle Obama to prove that she didn't say these things, NOT on the people that are claiming that she did?  Awesome!

Seriously though, how do you debunk a whisper campaign?  There has been absolutely zero evidence brought forth about this tape... only the excited clamor of a bunch of dead-enders at NoQuarter.  They have the burden of proof, not the accused.

Re: The Details On Michelle Obama's Alleged Whitey (none / 0)

In "Annie Hall" Woody Allen's character is obsessing over a slur he inferred in the following exchange:

Woody: Did you eat?
Unnamed Person:  No.  D'you?

Allen's character bizzarely reads in to that "D'you" the word "Jew", as a subtle dig at him.

Michelle Obama:

Why'd he cut folks off medicaid?
Why'd he let New Orleans drown?
Why'd he do nothing about Jena?
Why'd he put us in Iraq for no reason?

Larry Johnson thinks we should hear that as "whitey".

Woody Allen, in satire.

Do I understand this right? (none / 0)

We are asked to judge Sen. Clinton on her own merits and experience, quite reasonably in my judgment.  She plays up her many accomplishments over a long and distinguished career.  This record of accomplishment is a major reason I supported her for the nomination once my candidate dropped out.  But we are told to never judge her on the basis of President Clinton's behaviors, policies, associations, etc.  She is not made from President Clinton's rib, after all.  She stands as an impressive figure on her own, free from any possible taint by dint of her association with her husband.

But when it comes to Mrs. Obama, we are to take her supposed conduct (alleged and unproved, spread in the most offensive of slime campaigns) as the defining essence of Sen. Obama's inner soul.  Never mind what he says.  Never mind what he does.  Ignore his accomplishments and record.  All that goes out the window because Mrs. Obama said some things some people might find offensive (alleged and unproved, spread in the most offensive of slime campaigns).

By the way, without the benefit of any, well, textual or other evidence in front of me regarding her comments, I can say that American policy - not Americans, let's not idiotically conflate the two - is substantially responsible for the continental crisis in Africa.  Not alone, but substantially, dating back to early post-war planning (WWII).  And it is true that President Clinton could have done something to try and stop the genocide in Rwanda, but he didn't.  He did urge NATO campaigns in Yugoslavia to stop mass murder, and sometimes I have wondered why the action in the one case but not in the other.
