Congratulations, From a Clinton Supporter

Congratulations.

You did it.  You came from out of nowhere to build a tremendous coalition of all colors, all ages, all religions.

And you won.

I'll admit it -- I'm a little sad today.  That dream I've had for the past eight months, the dream of finally, finally hearing those glorious words -- Madame President -- is dead.

I knew this was coming.  I acknowledged, two months ago, that Obama would be the nominee.  I have said, since then, that I will vote for him.  I have condemned those Clinton "supporters" who say they will support McCain.  They do not represent me; they do not represent their candidate.  Clinton has made it clear that she will work to elect a Democrat to the White House in November.  Anyone who claims to be a Clinton supporter must follow her lead and do the same.

It's hard, though.  It's hard to accept that the dream is dead.  It's hard to know this is another lost battle in a seemingly endless war to achieve true gender equality.  We're not there yet; we're far from it.  We have so much work to do.  Women comprise only 16% of Congress.  We have a long, long way to go.

But today is about something else.

It's about a different dream.  An important dream.  The dream of Frederick Douglass; the dream of Harriet Tubman; the dream of Martin Luther King; and yes, the dream of a boy named Barack Obama.

Today, we are one step closer to realizing those dreams.  And for that, I am proud.  Very, very proud.

We still have a long fight ahead.  Miles to go.  There is work to be done within our own party.  This primary season has demonstrated the demons we have, even within the Democratic Party.

And we have not won the White House yet.  We know the Republicans will not hand it over without a fight.

But we are one battle closer today.

There are some who are still frustrated and angry.  They insist upon laying blame and calling names.  Today, more than any other day, we should ignore them.  They are not part of the solution.

Congratulations, Senator Obama.  Congratulations to his supporters.

And congratulations, America.

Anyone who pays attention to Republican blogs was never going to vote for the Democrat in the first place. That's why so many McCain trolls love to lurk about on Democratic blogs....they don't get the reactions they seek on their own turf.

Wouldn't that be just as sweet.

Through this process, Hillary has become her own person.  No longer Bill Clinton's wife, no longer the devil that the Republican smear machine created, no longer the distant, overly careful, thoroughly scripted politician-- she has connected with a vast number of people, and there's even some silent admiration among those across party lines.

I'm so sure this is only the beginning for her!!

Re: Don't give up (2.00 / 4)

Will you write a Diary on this already!

I can tell by your prose you can do it and I see you wrote one before.

What you said is so dead on.

I really had NO idea who Hillary really was, I never saw her standing alone in the political limelight, almost as if her name preceeded her.

The reason I recommend her for Supreme Court is I think it is a far more honorable position than President.  She can shape progressive policy for generations for LIFE.

Parents say how she is a great role model for their daughters?  How about Supreme court!

I can't tell her or Obama what to do, but I just would be tickled pink if she landed that seat in the Supreme Court.

I really, really want to write a diary on my feelings about Hillary and about the tortured process of nomination ... but ... it still really hurts to pull the deep feelings up to the surface, so I think I'll just hold off till things calm down.

Hillary in the Supreme Court would be an achievement indeed, I agree.  However, I'm still holding on to some hope for a President Hillary in 2016.  Obama is an awesome inspiration to many in the world-- but a woman on top would also be just as awesome!

Re: Congratulations, From a Clinton Supporter (2.00 / 15)

From this Obama supporter...  I'm not sure I agree with you.  I don't think that by realizing the dream of breaking one barrier, we necessarily lose the dream of breaking another.  As Dr. King said, injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

So we, supporters and progressives and Democrats, need to lean heavily on our new Democratic President and Congress to have a strong focus on women's rights and women's issues.  We need to force Barack Obama to be the first "woman President" in the same way that Bill Clinton was the first "black President."

Feminist causes aren't getting thrown under the bus, not by a long shot, not as long as we stand up and tell all our elected leaders and candidates that women's rights are human rights.

I personally don't long for the day we see the first female President.  I long for the day when the President's gender does not matter.  Which, unfortunately, means we have a much longer way to go.

Keep up the good fight and don't get discouraged.  You're part of the coalition too.

Re: Congratulations, From a Clinton Supporter (none / 0)

Very well put, but check this interview with Toni Morrison out:

Do you regret referring to Bill Clinton as the first black President? --Justin Dews, Cambridge, Mass.
People misunderstood that phrase. I was deploring the way in which President Clinton was being treated, vis-à-vis the sex scandal that was surrounding him. I said he was being treated like a black on the street, already guilty, already a perp. I have no idea what his real instincts are, in terms of race.

The dream of a female president is far from dead (2.00 / 3)

I think it's the greatest tragedy of this election cycle that Hillary's most fervent supporters have this mentality of, "if not now then never." Hillary, with very high negatives, a disorganized campaign, and huge stumbles, came very close to the nomination. If you give up now, then it probably won't happen, but the glory of democracy is that anything is possible, and no doors are ever completely close. I'm sure in 1988, after Jesse Jackson briefly captured the majority of pledged delegates only to eventually lose the nomination contest, blacks thought the same way about the likelihood of a black president, but here we are, a mere 20 years later, looking at the very realistic possibility.

I have just read through all the comments here.
I cannot express to you how excited I am to see both Clinton and Obama supporters speaking highly of both Clinton and Obama and all that they have BOTH achieved throughout this Primary season.

It truly is a day to celebrate both of them.....and the other Democrats who joined them in the contest (Edwards, Richards, Dodd, Biden, Kucinich...and, yes, even Gravel!). A group of Americans we should all be proud of.

Thank you, Angry Mouse, for being anything but Angry in this diary. You are a gracious supporter of Clinton and I am sure she is proud to have you in her ranks....and I am equally sure that Obama will be proud to have you join his.

So, yeah, thank you to both Clinton and Obama supporters for pushing this diary up the rec list AND for commenting in a manner that makes me all the more sure that.....
We are gonna kick some major ass in November!

Look out McCain....we're comin' for ya.

I'm ready to win this thing!!!
"Who are you for? That is the wrong question. It should be who is for you?" HRC

Thank you for the sentiment (none / 0)

But I disagree on one point.

It's about a different dream.  An important dream.  The dream of Frederick Douglass; the dream of Harriet Tubman; the dream of Martin Luther King; and yes, the dream of a boy named Barack Obama

No it isn't.  And it wasn't about the first woman President.

Its about the future of our nation, our rights, our environment, our prosperity.  McCain's race or genitalia don't matter, and neither should Obama's or HRC's.  What should matter is the candidates values, policies and trustworthiness.  I think to frame it as merely identity politics lessens both HRC and Obama.

JFK didn't win because he was a Catholic and thats not what made him historic.

McCain = Iraq. John McCain = overturn Roe.

Congrats to Clinton and you (2.00 / 1)

Even though some of the things she said today concerned me, I recognize how amazing this primary election has been.  If in 1998 someone told me that the Democratic presidential nomination would come down to six months worth of primaries and caucuses between a woman and an African American I don't know if I would have believed it.

Re: Congratulations, From a Clinton Supporter (none / 0)

I will be voting for Obama if I have to crawl on my hands and knees to the polls in November.

We CANNOT allow the GOP to continue W's policies in the WH for 4 more years.

Hillary's gonna BRING US UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE!!!! (2.00 / 1)

Obama openly invited her to do so.
Screw the ceremonial post of Veep - she'll be Sec Health & Human Services, do a kick-ass job of changing the healthcare system, get full credit for it, then become the first woman President in 2016. And no, she won't be too old - she'll be in her late 60s, and we all know that women rock longer and harder than men!

Not this time.

Re: Congratulations, From a Clinton Supporter (2.00 / 2)

Congratulations Senator Obama.
I have said from the beginning I would vote for whomever the democratic nominee is.  As a democrat I feel hopeful.  Whether or not I will knock on doors and GOTV, I cannot say.  Today is a hard day for me.

As a woman of 62, I know now my dream will never be realized.   To see a woman as president will most likely never be in my lifetime. In the pattern of history, it will take women another 50 years to catch up.  I do feel betrayed and angry right now...but not at Senator Obama, but at the democratic party.  I feel the men, the leaders of our party, ignored sexism, and showed little respect for Senator Clinton.  They took their issues against Bill out on Hillary.  I resent that and always will.

As a woman who walked the walk for four decades, knocking on doors, trying to gotv, knowing that the worker bee women (the majority in our party) were always answering to male leadership, I accept that has not changed. I thought it would this year.

I remember in the sixties when we were protesting.  Women had little or no say.  We were often delegated to gopher status back then.  It should have changed.  But in this campaign, it hasn't.  Still women are talked down to....still sexism is OK.

I am not against men. I am for equality.  I do not think that women's issues will be a focus. I do not believe younger women get it.  I will vote for Senator Obama and encourage every one of my friends who are Hillary supporters to do the same.
I will not be told that I should not feel sad, feel angry, feel betrayed. I feel all those things.  I hope the anger goes away soon and I can get back to working for the party.  But for now, I am not ready to do more than congratulate the Obama campaign.

I understand (2.00 / 1)

Like you - I doubt I will see a woman elected president in my lifetime - and you and I are of slightly different generations (making it all the more heartbreaking).  I received the same treatment you did.  Every campaign I've worked on, every Democratic cause I've championed - I've been relegated to the role of assistant.  I also feel the Democratic Party abandoned Senator Clinton - and for specious reasons (none of which have anything to do with Senator Obama).

I congratulate Senator Obama on his victory.  Pray god we win in the fall.  The prospect of a McCain presidency (AKA more Bush idiocy) doesn't bode well for America.

As a step to get together against McCainites, can folks please rec ANYTHING over TexasDarlin's
"It's a Tie!" diary?

TexasDarlin is a recommended link on the New Republican blog, so from her mouth to the GOPs ears...

Congratulations from a Huge Hillary Supporter (none / 0)

The race-bating worked.

It also helped to take FL and MI out of the game and to move up SC with its high percentage of AA's.

Going after Hillary and Bill PERSONALLY was a master stroke.

Denouncing personal attacks and the "old style" politics on camera while your campaign staff is sending out emails to all the reporters trashing the Clinton's and claiming they are race-bators was and is a nice touch.

Also, congratulations to the "leaders" in the Democratic party for puting your collective thumbs on the scale for Obama and throwing the Clinton's under the bus.

Congratulations to Obama's allies in the media: the late hit piece on Bill Clinton in Vanity Fair was pure evil genius and should be applauded. It was already clear that Obama would be handed the nomination but you still trashed Clinton one more time, bravo!

Now let's all hold hands and swear allegiance to Obama the "uniter".
