Montana Blue

I used to walk on the beach every Sunday, early, with my dog Blue. She and I would watch the sun come up, our paws and feet in the water, she tearing around, sniffing the wind, dancing in the surf.

Today was my first trip back to the beach since she died last November.

Photobucket

My dog Blue was one of those great furred personalities almost everyone loves. And she was totally  indiscriminate in her affections. Obama or Hillary would be just fine. I cannot remember a human being she avoided. Well, ok, if they had a stick to ward off the pesky creatures--and these often proved to be Republicans--  she would give them a wide go  around. But otherwise she adored humans and they adored her. In Manahttan where we lived for  several years  I can still hear the piping voice of the boy who lived on our block calling out to his Mom as we passed,

Look,  it's the singing wolf!

To his young mind the whoooowhoo whooo-oohthat all huskies do  sounded like singing, although the same happy sounds often sent older Manhattanites scooting to the edges of the sidewalk sometimes wide-eyed in terror as they asked,

Is that a wolf?

Blue never suspected the terror she aroused. She thought it was a game.  And for Blue life was a game. She especially loved:

I have it, now you try and get it back.

But if you did succeed in gaining the upper hand she just laughed and whoooowhoo whooo-ooed at you.    In Manhattan Sunday mornings were a special treat for both of us as we'd get up early and walk from the East river across 79th  Street  to Central Park where we would tramp  for more than an hour through the Ramble.  I always wondered if it reminded her  of being back in the woods in Montana.

In the beginning I had tried a polite turn around the great circle where all the fancy Manhattan dogs pranced and gamboled loose until 9 a.m., but Blue deemed most of these pampered pooches a little short on the rambunctious side of life. No, the Ramble was more her speed, and mine too with its trails cut through a profusion of trees and streams full of mossy boulders. The Ramble  even has a lake although a mean swan often partolled the shore and Blue instinctively knew to give that honker a wide go around. [ok. ok. Yes. It was a Republican swan.]

Thinking back on that time I still have no words to describe how fondly my heart would swell at the way she  would bound off into the brush only to  turn up somewhere down the trail, looking back, waiting patiently for me to catch up.

Blue loved everything to play at in life except swimming. I don't know why, now,  I thought she should swim? But when she was 2 years old I threw her of the dock in Montana's Whitefish Lake. Blue was born not far from Glacier Park, and that is where we first hooked up. But she hated water over her head, and she  never, ever forgot getting tossed in. She also never forgave me, so that whenever she and I were in close proximity to a large body of water  she'd lower her head, roll her  big blue eyes at me and then dash well out of reach.

But Blue loved the great southern California  beaches. Some mornings she would dash into the surf up to her chest and then raise her head and sniff the wind. Dolphins often come in close to shore and maybe she smelled them or maybe something else. I will always wonder because it is one of the secrets she took to her grave.

Beside curiosity about  her secrets Blue left behind a brown teddy bear with a red bowtie that  she adopted the second I walked in the door with it from a trip to Japan. It is sitting in a corner of the house alongside   a  grey and white rubber monster with spiky hair that squeaks  and a small, furry  Siberian husky with blue eyes mailed to us from some animal rights group in return for a contribution.

But to Blue, all stuffed animals were attractive, ownership being a slippery  issue because at street fairs she would lift them off counters and sometime even swipe one from an unwary child's hand. She also loved in no particular order trucks, cars, walks, rabbits, chickens  and my mother's wheaten terrier, Duffy. Unfortunately. Duffy went off Blue forevah after he tried to swipe a tidbit from the Big Girl's bowl. Blue was an alpha female and well, you do not mess with the food of the  Goddess. Although I was delighted when she stopped standing over the water spout in dog parks issuing commands   about  exactly  when her minions could have a swig--or not.

I never wrote about Blue's death. What do you say when your best friend dies after losing use of her back legs from liver cancer. After 13 yeears she lived inside my very cells. And I was not ready to say goodbye. I knew she died, of course But that question of saying goodbye in your heart is a whole other matter. I cried for a week and then sporadically after. I am crying now. Because I am saying goodbye. She is dead, and I am still here and wanting a pal to ramble with.

I read somewhere recently that if you have a good relationship, when it ends you are more likely to want another. Whereas if you had a bad experience, you will be less likely to want another. So I am seeing my desire for a new four-legged friend in this light. It is a tribute to Blue and all she gave  me of her great hearted self. Of course, she was my first  dog love. And you never get over the first one. I don't care how many come after.

Re: Montana Blue (2.00 / 6)

You are right in that your first dog love is always special. Take it from someone who loves dogs and has had several share his life, they are all special. You will love the next one just as much as you loved Blue. Our feelings for dogs is much like our feeling for our children, you love them all, each in their own way.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. It is especially touching when I think about my buddy who is lying at my feet as I type this. He's getting up there in years and is pretty gray around the face. I'll be devastated when he is no longer with me. Especially, because he has been such a comfort for me after my fiancee passed away. That has formed an even stronger bond than normal.

Wow... (2.00 / 5)

I'm sorry about Blue. It sounds like she still occupies a very special space in your heart. I understand. I had a gray cat named Emily as a child, and I grew so close to her. When she died, I was devastated. And in fact, I sometimes still tear up a bit when I see another cat with gray stripes.

Still, I'm sure Blue's watching over you from that Great beyond with the Great Goddess of the Sky. :-)

You know, this diary also reminds me of my mom's dog, Jackie. She's a rat terrier who recently turned 8. While Jackie now lives with my mom in her condo, I spent most of my teenage years with her. I'm sure when she passes along, I'll cry like hell. But no matter what happens, I'll always have a special place in my heart for her as well.

Yes, they do-- find their special place in our memories and hearts. I still think about the dog I had when growing up. Rascal used to ride around in my bicycle basket, and I was so proud that I never  had to lock my bike 'cause he was on the job. lol

What an amazing diary (2.00 / 6)

Linfar, thank you. I'm here reading this at work and I just teared up a little bit--you're an amazing writer and I love animals to death (although I'll admit to being more of a cat guy), but every animal in my life has been so wonderful and a great friend. I'm so sorry about your dog's passing.

Yeah you definitely need to get another dog.  We got our dog Jonesy at the Humane Society, and he's got the best temperament you could imagine.  We think he was abused as a puppy because he was really scared of humans for a while after we got him, but he's warmed up and is the perfect dog.  There's probably a dog at the Humane Society right now waiting for you to come pick him/her up. :)

That commercial is amazing...but, my wife has to change the channel whenever it comes on. It makes her sob. We have 3 shelter adopted dogs....if she had her way we would have a dozen (if I'm being honest...I feel the same as well!). They bring such joy to our lives and household that I cannot imagine life without four-leggers in the family.

Back to that commercial though...awesome and heartbreaking at the same time.

Re: Montana Blue (2.00 / 4)

my first real dog was a black, scottish terrier named Sailor. he was a rescued mutt. he was batshit crazy. he had personality. he was a badass; but one day i left the gate to our backyard open and he ran away. I went looking for him; left a trail of weenies to our house, but it was like he disappeared. i cried so much, and beat myself up for leaving that dumb gate open. I found out later it was my brother who left the gate open.

10 years later, my brother still blames me and I still blame him. We can never bring Sailor up without starting an epic argument of who's fault it was. but we always talk about how awesome he was. we eventually got past it and got a new dog-- our new dog reminds me of Sailor every now and then. some how it seems like Sailor would approve-

[sorry for your loss, i know it takes awhile to move on. I think we waited like 2yrs before we got another dog.]

Re: Montana Blue (2.00 / 2)

They were/are big woofers, for such little girls. Maddie is sheltie samoyad cross and she thinks she is a big bad wolf. Kady was a sheltie springer mix and my second dog love of my life. My first was our dog Copper when I was a child. She was a Sheltie who died when I was in my early 20's. I still grieve for her as well.

Re: Montana Blue (2.00 / 1)

One of my best friends lost her 12 year old canine companion on New Year's Eve. It has been almost 7 months and she still can't talk about it without getting emotional (nor, for that matter, can her friends).

We all loved Bear and 'grew up' with him. Someone at the time told her: "He has gone to where the rabbits run slow and straight". Every time we talk about him the comment comes up and we laugh....and then tear up.

She has a new pup now.
Brand new.
Not only am I a new 'uncle'....he is named after me. I kid you not. Her 3 yr old son wanted to name him Kysen....she got him to agree to 'Kai' (so that "people would not get confused").  ;)

He has big paw-prints to fill.
All I know is that Kai will be the recipient of all the love and lessons his family received from Bear. He is a lucky little fella (despite having been named after a silly human!)....and I am sure that whatever lucky pooch ends up sleeping at your feet will be just as blessed thanks to Montana Blue having 'trained' you well.  ;)

From one dog-lover to another...I wish you the best of luck in the adventure of finding your new best friend. I look forward to stories and pictures.  :)

Re: Montana Blue (2.00 / 1)

No, jimmy died around ten years ago when he was ten.

He's created a peacable kingdom around the place for bunnies chipmunks, chickens etc and was working on a project of removingg bears fromf the orchard.

He'd come back slashed up and proud of himself & we'd take him in for another 100 stitches. One night he got the remains of a boiled down turkey carcass as a treat, trotted up to fight bears & got bloat. Took him to vet at 3 am. A minute before we got there his head was on my shoulder, breathing in my ear, but when I opened the back door he was stiff.

Father malamute, mother lab. An ultimate alpha. If dogs barked at him in the parking lot he'd look at them as if concerned about their feelings of inadequacy.

Very sexist though. Didn't approve of my wife driving or receiving male visitors. He'd just lean on them until he got them out of the house.

Eliot, who we got a year later, is also a malamute cross, even bigger (125 lbs) and the opposite except in sweetness.  A goofball but good to have around

Jimmy sounds like an amazing soul. I had a malamute for awhile, but he stayed with my ex when we split. And I have to say I was astounded by this mal's prepensity for laying around. Moving was just not his cup of tea. they are all so different. One day I thought I'd take him out for a run in Central Park. me on my bike and him alongside. We took Jimmy's sister back after 8 years of living in a small back yard because the folks were getting divorced. She had turned into a fat grouchy elderly lady.  He was still puppyish. He had spent the years running free on hundreds of acres.  I don't think I'd get another w/o a lot of room.

Malamutes are big fuel burners.  Want to pull a sled all day.  I leaned to use it when we went to San Francisco. I'd lean back on the leash & let him pull me up the hills :-)

Oh yea- the fawn.  We only let him keep it for a day.

An employee brought it in thinking it was abandoned. However mother deer park their fawns. We brought it back that night & the mother picked it up.

Always kinda regretted it, Jimmy & the fawn certainly seemed to have bonded

Re: Montana Blue (none / 0)

I dunno. I can see where you would have regrets, but I bet the fawn was happier with Mom and going on to live  a "proper" deer life :)

Re: Montana Blue (2.00 / 1)

Beautiful dog, beautiful name, beautiful diary.

My first love was Jaxom.  I was 18, he was eight weeks.  My mother said "Oh, he's adorable!  But he can't stay." So we moved out together.

Jax was a Pit Bull (yes, those pit bulls), and his zest for life was beyond doing justice to with less words than you used, so I will try to paraphrase.

My father-in-law hates dogs.  He loved Jax.  The children in our neighborhood in Toronto would knock on the door and ask if he could come out to play.  Jax is legendary to everyone I've known across North America.

Jax raised several litters of kittens in South Carolina.  Watching them nest in his fur - precisely like the classic Warner Brother's cartoon...

Speaking of water, when a friend's dog in SC tried to swim out to chase a stick with Jax he ended up foundering helplessly (yes, you think they could all dog paddle, eh?). Jaxom had just trotted up onto shore triumphantly with the stick and turned to see him going under.  Without any pause he dropped the stick, swam back out, grabbed him by the scruff and hauled him back to shore.

Jaxom's always had your back, and he never ever hesitated, damn the odds.

The only two people he ever did not immediately love - one a liar and thief, the other a pompous manipulator - he would never tolerate (he realized their nature long before I did).  And this (in our younger days) among a rough crowd, but in retrospect he picked out the only two who really were intolerable and unreformable.

From snowmobiles to motorcycles to RVs, he and I went everywhere together.  He lived with us aboard Damien's Cradle on Centre Island when Damien was born.

At 13, living in Utah, he didn't have the mobility of his youth, and spent most of his time relaxing in the yard, the couch or, of course, our bed.  Our neighbor's came over with a year-old male terrier of some sort who bounded around the yard while Jax lay in the shade one day.  The young buck took it in his mind to, um, "attempt a dominant position, common among male dogs" on Jax.  Without moving a paw, Jax reached up, grabbed the youngster by the skin of the neck and pulled down in such a way that, somehow, said pup landed flat on his back with his wind knocked out, thoroughly chastened.  "Age and treachery always win over youth and enthusiasm." ;-)

One day, of course, he couldn't get up.  I held his head and talked to him at the vet - he had been there for me all my adult life.  Donna got me home.

That was ten years ago, and - apparently - no you don't get over it.

But it's OK, you can love again.  Bennie is three now, waiting at our new home on Siesta Key while I type this outside the local cyber cafe (Verizon won't have the house live for a week, damn them).  Donna and the kids are at the old house one last night before we move the rest of the stuff in the morning, so it's just the two of us tonight.

Think I'll go cuddle the big brown boy.

Thanks, linfar.  I'm glad you had Blue, and I'm sorry.  Don't worry, you will find love again.

You made me cry, chris. Jaxom sounds extraordinary. Yu outta send that around to all the pit bull hating places. So glad you have Bennie. I am thinking of getting a border collie 'cause I love the stories about Jax, Brian Schweitzer's-- the dem gov of Montana--dog. but not sure.

linfar, you got me! (2.00 / 1)

I don't get misty too easily, but your story made the room a little dusty over here!

Sorry to hear about Blue.  Having said that, you should definitely get a new dog ASAP.  Make it a puppy - a good place to focus all that love!

I definitely recommend adopting from your local shelter.  The American Humane Society has great information and a local shelter finder.

I just adopted a couple of kittens a few months ago, and they are awesome!  I know you're a dog person, but maybe this will get you started:

Best wishes!
