Defeating Obama/Hitler "by any means necessary"

I know there's a strong argument to be made that sites like No Quarter should be ignored. Just visiting them for grins supports their hit count. But their destructive hate-mongering is increasingly disturbing.

Personally, I worry some about innocent/naive lurkers who might not get exposed to refutations of all the lies. Moreover, in my dabbling at No Quarter (whether arguing, parody trolling, truth-telling) I have perceived a softening from some (some) of the regulars when directly challenged. Left to their own devices, they seem to have way too much fun imagining themselves saving the world from the Marxist/fascist/wimpish/brutal Obama -- "by any means necessary," as they like to say.

The dangerous rhetoric at No Quarter is not limited to the comment threads. It can be seen on full display in the work of regular featured writers. One recent offering connects Barack to Hitler thusly: Obama gets backing from George Soros who was raised appreciating Hitler's cult of personality, which is why he's latched onto Obama -- because he sees Obama as the same kind of personality as Hitler (and that's why the Soros puppet Obama must be stopped by any means necessary).

You get the idea. There's much more to these cesspools than waiting for "whitey" tapes, hero-worshiping Larry Sinclair, and investigating Barack's birth certificate (which, BTW, is a certain TexasDarlin's current labor of love).

The strange-bedfellow aspect of these sites is pretty fascinating. So-called progressives (who haven't gotten over the "crimes" against Hillary) embrace a marriage of convenience with outright government haters and racists. As long as they all agree to hate Obama, the most disagreement they voice among themselves comes in the form of fond chuckles ("you make me laugh, silly"). Hard-core feminists hold hands with homophobic Muslim haters.

I find this all not only scary, but a prediction-come-true on my part. Months ago I wrote diaries and comments (in various places) about how, if Barack won, we'd see a new coalition of absolutists, from across the traditional spectrum, who would feel shut out of Barack's promise of a new political culture that attempts to move us beyond the culture wars. What I hadn't anticipated was the fierce degree to which their very identities would feel threatened. I predicted such an alliance, but not the violent tendencies that are fueling it. (I mention this not to toot my horn -- just to, once again, bring up the broader cultural dynamics that are some of my longstanding interests.)

While I certainly haven't spent weeks and weeks at these sites (my IP was banned recently from NQ), I have gradually come to believe it's a worthwhile way to spend some energy -- especially if one is feeling the need to burn off some extra feistiness . They clearly have some influence. Fox and friends regularly feature these PUMA types. No Quarter and Larry Johnson were recently featured in Financial Times and American Prospect (linked prominently at Real Clear Politics)

And I do think without the occasional voice of sanity (and, sometimes, ridicule), they will feel more free to carve out an increasingly Captain Kurtz-like outpost -- providing justification to the craziest of the crazies out there.

I know many of you vehemently disagree, but that's my opinion.

You people need to stop exaggerating.

There is nothing more hateful or dangerous being written there than that has been written at dkos or huffpo which folks at noquarter probably find equally loathsome.

Any word (2.00 / 2)

Wow, you are extremely tolerant (2.00 / 4)

The front pagers at DKos and HUffPo should not even be in the same sentence with comparison to No Quarter.  HuffPo and Dailykos may have some crazy comments here and there but No Quarter is a fucking cesspool filled with racists, delusional bottom feeders, GOP operatives taking advantage of idiots, and the mentally and/or emotionally insane.  Get a grip on reality before speaking.

Are you male? (1.33 / 3)

I think you need to get a grip on the truth.

Males tend to think sexism didn't exist in progressive blogs. markos and huffpo were cesspools of misogyny all day, every day during the primary.

A person would have to be willfully ignorant to not acknowledge it or address it.

Re: Defeating Obama/Hitler "by any means (2.00 / 2)

either you haven't spent any time over there, or you're part of their hate-filled tribe.

We're not just talking about people who enjoy flame wars, we're talking about an impassioned, single-minded effort to destroy Obama by any means necessary.

Do they really believe he's the antiChrist? No doubt some do, some don't. Regardless, the coalition generally ACTS as though the continued existence of the republic is now in their hands.

...destroy Obama by any means necessary.

Hmmm.....I recall dkos and huffpo had a similar intent but the target was Hillary Clinton.

Re: Really? (1.00 / 1)

Yeah I saw that. Obama brought it on himself. He played what some people call the race card in one of his speeches recently.

As you can see the folks at noquarter ran with it.

Larry Johnson has taken down worse and called people out on the racist blogs and commentary. You wouldn't happen to have in cut and pastes of that would you?

um ... and we haven't heard gender or sexism mentioned by any of these people who think race shouldn't be mentioned?

NO Q card decks seem to have 20 gender cards and most posters keep a few more up their sleeves

"what some people call" (2.00 / 1)

Obviously people who don't know what the fuck it means.

On the plus side, it's nice to have the Internet's dumbasses in one - eminently avoidable - place.

Evidently you don't read a lot of blogs. "Internet dumbasses" are unavoidable because they are everywhere.

Re: "what some people call" (2.00 / 2)

True, they're everywhere - but at some sites, like this one, they're discouraged.  At NQ, open racism is not only encouraged but openly practiced by those who run the site.

Anyone who willingly attaches his or her name to that site, willingly attaches his or her name to racism.  It is that simple.

I feel the same way about markos and huffpo. Open sexism and misogyny was encouraged by those who run the site. Sexism was allowed to go unchecked.

You haven't answered my challenge above.  Show me one instance of someone on Daily Kos saying something about Sen. Clinton that is worse than anything Republicans ever said about her, and not being troll-rated to smithereens for it.

Let's see it.

You can go over to the dkos  and dig them up. I no longer visit the site not even to lurk. I'm sure you know the way.

Do you know what GFY stands for (2.00 / 2)

You think Senator Obama deserves to be called a spade because he said the GOP was going to use his race as a weapon?

Let me guess, there is a perfectly acceptable reason they chose the Ace of SPADES.

"inadequate black male" was an accurate statement too I guess.

Fighting off bastard black descendants is also valiant struggle.

All of these are defended and promoted at the hate site you defend.

The only front page post deleted in the past three months was one contrasting Cindy the princess against the angry, ugly bitter Michelle.

It was racist and sexist.

Since Harriet 'black male' Miers, and Paula 'black bastards' Abeles are front page celebrities at that shit hole I'll let you guess why that story was pulled.

And... while they like to say they are tolerant of (2.00 / 1)

diverse perspectives, I found it interesting that my IP was banned (and all my posts erased) after responding to a slew of epithets and threats to beat me up -- whereas the original attackers are still posting there.

FYI, I had posted a comment in a diary that celebrated Kim Jong Il's so-called "endorsement" of Obama (another lame, oblique attempt at guilt by association). I asked a fellow poster whether he was planning on having as much fun condemning McCain for his "endorsement" by McCain's Vietnamese torturer. This made the cheery tough guy go ballistic, calling me every name in the book and threatening to pummel me if he ever saw me -- because, he said, I was ridiculing a war hero.

Re: Defeating Obama/Hitler "by any means (none / 0)

A front-pager calling Obama a "spade" and repeatedly comparing David Axelrod to Hitler isn't anything worse than here or HuffPo?

http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/05/07/ i-call-a-spade-a-spade/

Can you please link to a frontpager here or at HuffPo making similar comments?  I do not believe that it ever got that bad, here or there, and thus think you're making very inaccurate claims.

Today's headline at HillaryIs44 (2.00 / 2)

Voting For Barack Obama, Part VI

Obama supporters are packing extra Hopium in their hookahs lately. They need it. Obama supporters are learning what we have known since our very first day of publication through to today:

Obama simply cannot be trusted. Obama cannot be trusted on any issue. Obama cannot be trusted by his friends. Obama cannot be trusted by his enemies. Obama cannot be trusted.

Every post there is about Obama, none are about Hillary.  I wonder how the people who visit that site feel about the fact that it's turned from a militant pro-hillary site that often bashed Obama to an integral cog in the Republican Smear Machine.  They don't even talk about Hil as VP anymore, just how to get John McCain into office.  How transparent a scam is this?  Can members honestly think it was ever really sponsored by anyone except the GOP?

George Soros (2.00 / 1)

I do not want to dignify the essay in question or the website with my participation, but let's be clear on one thing:

George Soros is a Hungarian Jew who experienced anti-Semitism and the NAZI occupation of Hungary first hand.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_soro s

Soros may be a complicated figure in some respects, but to label him an admirer of Hitler is an irresponsible calumny that is beyond belief.
