Christmas Bombs for Iran?

Bill Kristol and John Bolton, in separate interviews, seem to be leaking a Bush plan to take out Iranian nuclear facilities before he leaves office. If it is done before the election, Obama is sunk.

If it is done before the election, Obama is sunk.

And this, why?

If it's done before the election, John McCain will have to go on record supporting it.

It won't be popular.

Re: Christmas Bombs for Iran? (2.00 / 1)

Bush would have Israel go in before the election, so that when Iran flips its lid and all hell (actual and potential) breaks loose, voters will choose the tested McCain and Obama will be sunk.

Oh, he's "tested."  I see.  And Obama is just inexperienced and would have absolutely no idea how to answer that 3 AM phone call, I suppose?

you go into an election with the electorate you have, not the electorate you'd like to have.

Personally I appreciate the link. I have been busy and did not notice the other diary. As far as I am concerned, I would love to see a really thorough diary by someone more knowledgeable than me about this subject. The noises on Iran are scaring the poo out of me.

Re: Christmas Bombs for Iran? (none / 0)

Actually, it's if Obama is elected, Bush will drop bombs (hence Christmas Bombs and not Halloween Chocolate grenades) and if Obama is not elected, he may punt and let McCain take his time organizing the bombing.

Hey look at it this way, maybe the super right wing crazies will vote for Obama so Bush will bomb Iran?  Weird huh?  At the same time Bush or McCAin is going to do it one way or the other, so that shouldn't prevent people from voting for Obama as a way to stop bombing Iran because que sera sera.
The GOPD (rather neo-cons) didn't think this one through

Of course... (none / 0)

A lame duck president bombing Iran without the express knowledge and consent of Congress totally wouldn't result in the administration being disgraced and possibly put on trial for war crimes.

This is bluffing.  This is the Executive branch using their reputation as being an unstoppable and amoral force of nature to scare people into voting Republican.

In this avalanche, the pebbles get to vote.

Re: Of course... (2.00 / 1)

I wonder what it would actually take for Bush to be held to a reasonable standard for anything.  Bombing Iran without the approval of Congress would not be that much of a stretch.  He could start off with "pursuing al Queda" (I know...) which would then quickly morph into "pursuing al Quds" (again, I know...) which would then morph into "eliminating threats against our military and economic interests" which would then morph into "holding the Iranian regime accountable" which would then morph into "bombing the (non-existent) nuclear weapons factories", which would morph into "bomb strategic targets in Iran".  I'm guessing it would take about six weeks and another outrage, maybe something related to climate change, to completely lose everybody (with the exception of Feingold).  So this could all get gearing up after the second debate between McCain and Obama and come to fruition right in time for Christmas.

Re: Christmas Bombs for Iran? (2.00 / 1)

Bush's hypothetical attack on Iran has been the dog that didn't bark in the liberal blogosphere for as long as I can remember.  I can't remember how many times I've been promised it would happen within days, including after that horrible horrible Kyl-Lieberman amendment passed.

I have no crystal ball, but I nevertheless feel extremely confident that if Bush were to suddenly attack Iran before the election, it would NOT be to McCain's benefit.
