Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up?

Ok- I need to vent here.  I am so so so sick of Nancy Pelosi that I could VOMIT.  Can she NOT make a comment without speaking negatively about Hillary Clinton?  I mean COME ON!  It has happened so many times this year that I've lost count.  Now it's the "I don't know WHAT she's talking about, I'VE never experienced sexism" comment (that's not word for word- but close).  Well, you've only ran for a house seat in a Liberal California district Pelosi- not on a National level!  What a moron.  Seriously.  Not only is she incompetent in running The House- she's got a real knack for pissing people off.
Honestly- I think she's jealous of Hillary Clinton.  I think she LOATHED the idea of another woman with more power than her.  Well, guess what Nancy, Hillary Clinton IS more powerful than you, regardless of title.  18 million voters sealed the deal.  SO GET OVER IT!

I apologize for the spicy rhetoric- but I'm fed up.

has faced sexism, but that it can be overcome and shouldn't be considered the end all be all reason why Hillary lost.

glad to hear that Cindy is taking her on.  nancy does hate Hillary and she's really out of touch when she keeps the hate alive, by making her snide comments.  She's an old school girl, a queen bee? They were supposed to have died out with disco and irony, go figure.  I'll donate to Cindy too, she's pissed that Nancy refuses to see George as the war criminal that he is.  Nancy likes him, her daughter traveled with George and wrote swell about him.  Nancy comes from one of the most politically connected families ever, she's never had to work for a thing.  She has contempt for women, even though she's one of us, in body.

speaking of my ex congresswoman, she has had the luxury of running from SF. prior to becoming speaker, she has not had the media glare on her 24-7 while collecting votes to be speaker. would the other reps in congress have picked her as speaker had the press caricatured her as a latte-botox-nut-cracker fem bot from sf for say, 5 months, prior to the speaker vote?

she is a national figure because she became speaker.  how many people knew of nancy before that? my point is, that whatever tag she had- she did not suffer the daily and nightly attacks that hillary got on trying to become the party's nominee. if the speaker election was an open contest which ran on for say 8 months...would nancy still have been elected speaker if she got the hillary treatment from msnbc and ms. dowd on a daily and nightly basis?

No basically what Nancy Pelosi said is you just got get over it; sexism exists & women should just be happy with the strides we currently have made. I wonder how Obama would feel if he came in 2nd & many AA said it was due to his race & he was told the above @@

Sorry I can't just get over it that I still have to deal with so much garbage on a daily basis; garbage that even my own party, the more progressive movement, either denies exists, coins key phrases from or sneers at.  It doesn't make one feel too good about making their way - but  I guess I just have to get over it @@

Hmm don't know if I was talking about any of this - just pointing out how screwed up the sentiment was that was expressed & I don't see much in the way of outrage. If the same statement was made about any other oppressed group there would be mass outrage, controversy, debate & discussion. "I'm a victim of sexism myself all the time, but I just think it goes with the territory, I don't sit around to say, `but for that"...I think her candidacy was a just a bright, bright moment for us... Pelosi said she wanted to know more facts before she made a final pronouncement about sexism and the Clinton candidacy...

You're venting about something she didn't say, and completely mischaracterizing what she did say.

Re: You make my case (2.00 / 1)

I am sorry, but you will have to be more specific.  Show me some examples where "every criticism" of Hillary Clinton has been called sexism.  I think it is most likely that you have been so in denial of what sexism there has been that you can not discern between what is sexism and what is not.  It is an easy out for you to claim that people are saying every criticism is sexism.  that way, you really don't have to sift through what people say and admit that some of the comments and statements have sexism at their root. It is really not intelligent to refuse to look at things and reject what other people say without considering any of it.  It is over the edge bias, the same as you are accusing others of having.

Bzzzzzzt. No, that would be Chris Van Hollen's job, not Nancy Pelosi's job. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Van_H ollen

After the Democrats regained control of the House in the 2006 elections, Van Hollen became the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the fifth-ranking position among House Democrats. In this post, Van Hollen is responsible for leading efforts to get more Democrats elected to Congress.

Pelosi's main jobs are far more important. She is the ceremonial leader of the House, and more importantly, she is the political and legislative voice of the House majority. In other words, she is responsible for getting the Democratic agenda enacted into law. If you look at the agenda on which the Dems won power in 2006, and compare it to what Pelosi has actually done, she comes up short in several areas. That has nothing to do with her gender.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (2.00 / 1)

Way to jump to conclusions!

I think Nancy Pelosi (who was raised to be a political animal and behaves that way) is terribly jealous of Hillary Clinton because she's the more famous female in Congress. I don't believe that all females are catty or jealous at all and I don't believe this about other female Congresswomen. I do not see jealousy by Dianne Feinstein (who I also can't stand), or Barbara Boxer, or Sheila Jackson Lee, or Maxine Waters, or Jane Harmon, etc.

I think Pelosi had done an awful job (as evidenced by the awful job she's done), and I do think she's jealous, as evidenced by the fact that she keeps making public statements about Hillary Clinton, even though she's supposed to be completely neutral going into the convention.

And she was raised to be the "belle of the ball". Just like George Bush was raised to be the "cock of the walk", but she's a woman so that term doesn't really fit. I was going to say that she doesn't like being upstaged by someone who isn't of her "political pedigree" but I thought making an animal analogy would be more offensive.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (none / 0)

Here's my problem with these claims sometimes, people feel justified when they do it but when others do it, it's a personal affront. She said she hadn't experienced it, so the diarist takes her to task, as do you. But you say it's just because she is "the belle of the ball", but you know it wasn't meant that way, but others think differently. And then bickering ensues the same way some people though HRC's campaign baited and some think it's all hogwash. it seems to be from what perspective you come from. i would in turn say that maybe if when defending a point of view, if one doesn't toe a line that they know if someone said to them might cause offense, then these little matches might be best spent on important issues.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (none / 0)

You lost me at the end there.

I'm not really taking Pelosi to task on her comments about Clinton. I take her to task for being an awful Speaker of the House and a coward (i.e., a "political animal" instead of a strong leader). The fact that she keeps going out of her way to undermine Clinton makes me think that she's jealous.

And I don't think all women, or all female politicians are jealous, but similarly I'm not going to pretend that none of them are ever jealous. Men can be plenty jealous of one another too.

Ferraro's point is that race and gender helped....Obama, herself, Hillary.  It's a no brainer.  Race and gender also hurt Obama, Hillary and Ferraro.  The difference that ignorant people don't get is that at one time, like for 200 years, race and gender ONLY hurt.  It is a good thing, imo, that now there is a positive side to race and gender in the political arena.

On the other hand, Pelosi comes off as women and minorities who are right wingers.   Yes, racism and sexism exist, they admit, but we, women and minorities on the right, have risen above it...we are better than those of you who talk about how racism and sexism hurt people.

Two totally different things....

rec'd highly (2.00 / 1)

as Nancy Pelosi is not only useless as a speaker, but her comments are even more so. Why doesn't she run for President, and see how far she gets?

Re: rec'd highly (none / 0)

She would win CA and maybe Oregon?  And lose everything else!

Re: rec'd highly (2.00 / 1)

I don't think she would win California. Most of us know how useless she's been.

Besides being egregiously sexist..... (2.00 / 1)

Honestly- I think she's jealous of Hillary Clinton.  I think she LOATHED the idea of another woman with more power than her.  Well, guess what Nancy, Hillary Clinton IS more powerful than you, regardless of title.  18 million voters sealed the deal.  SO GET OVER IT!

...this is one of the most childish, incoherent screeds I've seen on here since the FlowBees decamped.

What is it about Clinton supporters and ALL CAPS?

Re: HAY Gaiz (2.00 / 1)

So saying that one woman is against another is fostering sexist rivalries?  What has it been called for decades when men have competed and underhandely sabotaged one another?  Or is the sexist part seeing it as two women fighting, instead of two people?

More of the quote- (2.00 / 3)

"My impression is, yes there is sexism. My knowledge is yes, there is sexism...but I find myself, I get a tremendous upside from being a woman."

AS I SAID IN THE POST- "poo-pooing" Clinton's statement against sexism.

This ONE quote was not the entire point either.  She has spoken out   about Hillary constantly during the primary- ALWAYS slanting  negatively against her.  Also saying "The Dream Ticket" will never happen.  As if to say- "we don't want Hillary".  Do your research.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (none / 0)

"I think she's jealous"?

What is this, seventh grade?  Are women, in your mind, not able to share powerful positions without catfighting?

Ugh.

Nancy jealous of Hillary?? (1.50 / 2)

Uh..not. The truth of the matter is that Nancy recognizes Hillary for the person she is. Many leaders in the democratic party have lost patience with her and her mystifying sense of entitlement.

And sorry..Hillary does not have more power than the Speaker, regardless of whatever number of democrats may have voted for her. In my opinion Hillary can learn alot from Speaker Pelosi. Maybe she would have been a trite more successful had she emulated Nancy's quest for unity in the party, and the Speaker's graciousness and class. More importantly, Nancy didn't get where she is by being married to a former President.

Pelosi is useless (2.00 / 2)

She offered Chet Edwards as a possible VP pick for Obama today.  Does she want Obama to lose so that she remains the most high powerful minority in all of America?

The Hillary-Pelosi feud, soon to be followed by the Hillary-Sebelius feud; you know the media is going to eventually ask Hillary the question "how would you feel if Obama picks Kathleen Sebelius to serve as his VP candidate."

I have given up on Pelosi.

She has disgraced herself during the primary process.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (2.00 / 2)

Not to mention during the last 2 years when she had the chance with the majority to at least try some legislation that would be notable, but went on to do nothing, at least that I can see.

Nancy is a disgrace (2.00 / 3)

but she's been jealous of Hillary for years. When Hillary went to China and gave the famous speech where she proclaimed womens' rights to be human rights it was Nancy who tried to stop her from going and giving the speech.

Re: Nancy is a disgrace (none / 0)

I love your sig, I almost didn't get it at first.  You talking about how Alice Palmer broke the rules and how Hillary played with the rules on MI/FL, so Obama a "dirty guy" because he actaully follows the rules.  I appreciate the sarcasm, but it doesn't come off as snark at first, but now I get it...good one, that's really funny!

Pelosi keeping strong women down - see Jane Harman (2.00 / 4)

I agree.  I was so upset back in 2006 when one of Pelosi's first decisions after Dems took the house was not to have Jane Harman be chair of the House Intel. Cmte.

Jane Harman was ranking member of that cmte.  Agree with her completely or not, she is smart and capable.  Pelosi had a personal rivalry w/ Harman, who's strong personality and past attempts to gain power in the California delegation (and run for gov) have bothered Pelosi.  She deserved it -- not in the way people say Hillary deserved presidency (no one deserves that unless they get the delegates, which Clinton didn't).  Harman had earned that position and was best qualified.

Rather than let the most qualified woman have the job, Pelosi instead wanted to put Alcee Hastings - who had been impeached as a federal judge - in that position.  She eventually relented on that and put the 3rd ranking member in the position.

I think that as a woman herself, Pelosi is not good for women in leadership.  Rather than support other women's success, she seems to have a pattern of working to keep down (or be dismissive of) other women who might rival her power.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (1.75 / 4)

The reason Nancy Pelosi is completely useless as Speaker is because she is as complicit in the goings on in Washington as any Republican.

The reasons she blathers on about Clinton is because she is an idiot.

Two completely unrelated shortcomings but they add up to one phony bitch.

by JustJennifer on Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 05:14:39 PM EST

Too funny (2.00 / 1)

The reason Nancy Pelosi is completely useless as Speaker is because she is as complicit in the goings on in Washington as any Republican.

That's just idiotic. Nancy Pelosi has a far more progressive record than, just to pick a name at random, Hillary Clinton.

Two completely unrelated shortcomings but they add up to one phony bitch

I'm just imaging the howling and screaming from you and the people reccing your comment if someone had called Hillary Clinton a "bitch".

Your selective sensitivity to sexism and name-calling is laughable, but hardly surprising.

And to the extent that Pelosi has been ineffective, it's because she's been undermined by Clintonite cats-paws like Rahm Emmanuel and Steny "FISA" Hoyer.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (none / 0)

Nancy's never really gotten me excited--she's almost as useless as Reid. Seriously, "impeachment off the table", and generally getting nothing accomplished in the congress--time to go, Nancy-poo.

She is worse than Reid.  Reid at least has some political sense, and was known for his ability to convince others of issues behind the scene.  I don't know what good Pelosi has been.

Re: Could someone ask Nancy Pelosi to shut up? (2.00 / 6)

Pelosi looks like she is constantly on camera.  What is with the smiling dolt look? And, I share your aggravation.  Everytime she has opened her mouth this campaign it has been to put down Clinton, whether it was an early on rejection of the so called "unity ticket" or a veiled call for her to get out of the race before it was only half over.  My biggest disappointment in her however, is her failure to lead when she had the opportunity to push for a Democratic agenda as the speaker.  I was so thrilled when she was appointed the speaker, because it was a milestone for women, and I even liked her at that point.  Little did I know what a failure and missed opportunity she would be.  It is a real shame.

Disclaimer:  Anything I have said about Pelosi, I would gladly say about any man who trys to pull the same shit.

by Scotch on Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 06:13:02 PM EST

Since we're paraphrasing, (2.00 / 1)

what I came away with after watching that interview was that Nancy Pelosi was basically telling Clinton supporters to either "get over it" or "go Cheney" ourselves. The longer I listened to her, the more pissed off I got.
