Stop The "Iran War Resolution"

I hope to spread this far and wide. NO. MORE. WAR. From the website Stop AIPAC This resolution demands that President Bush "initiate an international effort" to impose a land, sea, and air blockade on Iran to prevent it from importing gasoline and to inspect all cargo entering or leaving Iran. Such a blockade imposed without United Nations authority (which the resolution does not call for) would be seen as an act of war. Congressional sources say the House could vote on the resolution, H.Con.Res. 362 (see full resolution here), as early as next week (June 23-June 27). As of June 20, it already has 169 cosponsors in the House. Current list of cosponsors here. See bottom of page for latest status. What you can do after the flip.

You can send an email or printed letter to _your_ representative asking them to oppose this resolution.

From the Iran Nuclear Watch blogspot: According to the House leadership, this resolution is going to "pass like a hot knife through butter" before the end of June on what is called suspension - meaning no amendments can be introduced during the 20-minute maximum debate. It also means it is assumed the bill will pass by a 2/3 majority and is non-controversial. As of June 18, the bill already has 169 co-sponsors. If and when the bill is voted on suspension, there will be a roll call vote and AIPAC will use how member's voted on the resolution in the lead up to the elections.

I hope that this election isn't going to distract us from those who have been trying start yet another useless war. We cannot afford to let this go unnoticed, please at least send a note to your representative.

Update (h/t Steve M)

Here is a list list of cosponsors of the bill. There are too many Dems to count, which to some is the sign of a tragic sellout, while to me it sorta makes me wonder if the bill is actually that bad. I'll quote the tail end of the resolution so people can make up their own minds.
Whereas nothing in this resolution shall be construed as an authorization of the use of force against Iran: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress-- (1) declares that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability, through all appropriate economic, political, and diplomatic means, is vital to the national security interests of the United States and must be dealt with urgently; (2) urges the President, in the strongest of terms, to immediately use his existing authority to impose sanctions on-- (A) the Central Bank of Iran and any other Iranian bank engaged in proliferation activities or the support of terrorist groups; (B) international banks which continue to conduct financial transactions with proscribed Iranian banks; (C) energy companies that have invested $20,000,000 or more in the Iranian petroleum or natural gas sector in any given year since the enactment of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996; and (D) all companies which continue to do business with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps; (3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program; and (4) urges the President to lead a sustained, serious, and forceful effort at regional diplomacy to support the legitimate governments in the region against Iranian efforts to destabilize them, to reassure our friends and allies that the United States supports them in their resistance to Iranian efforts at hegemony, and to make clear to the Government of Iran that the United States will protect America's vital national security interests in the Middle East.

If any bombs start getting dropping on Iran, we are losing this election; Superman couldn't win it.  How about that, Bush starts another war to save the Republican Party?

Re: Stop The "Iran War Resolution" (2.00 / 1)

With 60% of the population opposing the current war, I think whoever is complicit in the march to war will be held accountable.

So I pray that this would not be effective, they certainly would have to entice Iran into somehow look like the aggressor for justification, that may be the only way ( I hope )

Re: How will Obama vote? (none / 0)

My guess is that Reid and Pelosi will fight to give Obama cover by preventing this resolution from coming to a vote.

Beating the war drum again?  The Republicans have really run out of ideas, but it works each time.

Re: Stop The "Iran War Resolution" (none / 0)

I think that's really, really silly.  Everyone hates Bush, but he starts another war, and suddenly everyone will go "Gosh, we totally need another Republican to prosecute this war"?  There is no way the public would reward the GOP for starting a war with Iran at this point.

Re: Stop The "Iran War Resolution" (2.00 / 1)

I am very interested in seeing how he handles this, a good test frankly, and one where he might gain a bit of traction since he has been against the Iraq war all along.

Re: Stop The "Iran War Resolution" (none / 0)

since he has been against the Iraq war all along.

Even though he voted for funding it every time.

It will indeed be a good test of his conviction and leadership on the issue.

We will see.

I am assuming you crossposted this someplace else, because your "list" of cosponsors is not linked.

Here's more on the Iran Resolution (none / 0)

House Resolution Calls for Naval Blockade against Iran
America's powerful pro-Israel lobby pressures the US Congress

A US House of Representatives Resolution effectively requiring a naval blockade on Iran seems fast tracked for passage, gaining co-sponsors at a remarkable speed, but experts say the measures called for in the resolutions amount to an act of war.

H.CON.RES 362 calls on the president to stop all shipments of refined petroleum products from reaching Iran. It also "demands" that the President impose "stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran."

Analysts say that this would require a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Since its introduction three weeks ago, the resolution has attracted 146 cosponsors. Forty-three members added their names to the bill in the past two days.

In the Senate, a sister resolution S.RES 580 has gained co-sponsors with similar speed. The Senate measure was introduced by Indiana Democrat Evan Bayh on June 2. In little more than a week's time, it has accrued 19 co-sponsors.

AIPAC's Endorsement

Congressional insiders credit America's powerful pro-Israel lobby for the rapid endorsement of the bills. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) held its annual policy conference June 2-4, in which it sent thousands of members to Capitol Hill to push for tougher measures against Iran. On its website, AIPAC endorses the resolutions as a way to ''Stop Irans Nuclear Proliferation" and tells readers to lobby Congress to pass the bill.

I don't know if any of you have noticed, but I think Bush has been planning to go to war with Iran for quite some time. I think their strategy is as soon as one war starts looking bad, let's start another one.

Now I am trying to stop yelling out my window.

Re: Stop The "Iran War Resolution" (none / 0)

This bill will probably die in committee. That's the preferred method of dealing with something like this. It still bears close scrutiny to make sure it fails if it does come to the floor.
