McCain Panders, Obama Stands Firm on Offshore Drilling

I am proud of Obama for standing up against McCain's latest ineffectual pander.

Just like McCain's absurd "gas tax holiday" proposal (which all economists agree would save Americans either nothing or $28 on average), McCain's recent proposal to open up America's coastal waters to offshore oil drilling operations (which is, to boot, a 180-degree flip-flop from his earlier position) is a shameless, useless sop to voters that assumes that Americans are too stupid or ill-informed to realize what crap it is (according to recent polls, Americans may indeed be just that stupid ill-informed).

Here is Obama on the latest McCain silliness:

Believe me -- if I thought that there was any evidence at all that drilling could save people money who are struggling to fill up their tanks by this summer or this year or even the next few years, I would consider it. But it won't. And John McCain knows that.

Re: McCain Panders, (2.00 / 1)

Yea, compromise on the things that matter, like FISA, and don't compromise on the things that won't ever happen, offshore drilling.

That's some kind of bs to believe in.

WTF, Jerome? (2.00 / 4)

No, I didn't want him to compromise on FISA, but I think it's horrible that you wrote that entry condoning offshore drilling. Whether it will happen or not, it's still wrong. So you think Obama might as well pander on this? I'm glad he isn't compromising on offshore drilling. Eventually, the voters will recognize it as a silly gimmick which won't produce quick returns -- the same way they realized that the gas tax holiday was a gimmick.

He wasn't my first choice, either, but I'm not going to sit here and say he's full of bullsh*t.

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.

Re: WTF, Jerome? (none / 0)

I value freedom more than I do loyalty to a candidate that will sell it out. He can have my vote, but that doesn't make it any better... I'll skip over the part where you revision what happened with the gas tax/windfall profits issue in IN.

"Educate the voters".

Pffhhfttt, howabout on something that matters?

Re: McCain Panders, (1.00 / 0)

To top that gas tax $28.00 saving only?

Here is under the radr know fact---that was a 2000 report everyone of the economist cited, which was completed in 1999. The SUV sales increased in 2000-2003 I read close to 57%.

so the saving is much more and it of course is a hell of lot more on diesel owners...

I skip over plenty of opportunities, but not the ones that matter.

Remember to stand on the uphill side when tipping cows.

Re: McCain Panders, (none / 0)

So in your world making fun of Obama for opposing off-shore drilling is one of the cases that "matters?" If he came out against torturing kittens would you feel it "matters" enough to diss him on that too?
