A timely reminder

This is a pretty lame diary, but the latest xkcd seemed apropos.  Is it an evolutionary bug in our brains that we're inclined to be dicks to people we can't see?  Or is it a feature of the internet that we let loose the flames we have to repress in real life?

It is the anonymity (none / 0)

When you associate an identity with a person it becomes harder to flame them.  When they lose that identity they become flame bait if you disagree.

Re: It is the anonymity (none / 0)

I think that's a lot of it, but I've seen my share of flamewars between people who have developed online "identities" (e.g. active long-time members of Slashdot).  Maybe these "identities" aren't robust enough, or maybe these people really are loud-mouthed jerks in real life.  Maybe when alyssa says (below) that it's always harder to flame people in real life, that's another way of saying that online identities can never be sufficient.

I choose neither.

I believe what people say online is a reflection of who they are. Even if you repress your true feelings offline those feelings are still a part of who you are.

A part, but then again everyone's part asshole.  What part of their nature someone chooses to repress is, I think, perhaps more important than their basic impulses.  You can test the combination of impulses and repression either offline or online.  I prefer to think offline is the truer test, both because we've evolved to deal with it, and because the alternative is just too depressing.

bug. its way easier to say nasty things to people when you dont have to look into their eyes when you do it. that and you dont really have to deal with the 'real life' reprucussions so much when shit goes down.
