The Extraordinary Privilege of Living an Ordinary Life

Arianna Huffington is shilling her new book on TPM Cafe, and it's just an exercise in "telling them what they want to hear" for her target demographic.

"The American genius is about bringing out the extraordinary in ordinary people."

This is flatter-the-mob populism at its worst, and the real story is more like tremendously extraordinary people somehow contriving to allow ordinary people to live ordinary human lives.

In Europe a farmer was just a peon bound to the land and forced to subsist on a fraction of his crop while landlords ate the rest, but in America those ordinary farmers could live ordinary human lives, because Washington and Jefferson and Madison made a republic to protect them from the lords of old Europe.

In the Old South a black man was nothing but a thing, but Lincoln made a war against the institution of slavery, and when none of his generals would fight a battle against other white men to free the slaves, he replaced them one after another until William Tecumseh Sherman broke the back of the South, and Martin Luther King and Jack Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson completed this great work, and none of them were ordinary men, but they made it possible for black men and women to live ordinary lives, and if pampered zillionaires like Arianna Huffington don't think that's good enough, and try to inflate expectations beyond ordinary life, the rest of us should remember that for most of human history almost nobody had the privilege of living an ordinary human life, and almost nobody enjoys that privilege today outside a few lucky countries like the United States.

It's easy to lose the extraordinary privilege of leading an ordinary life by chasing "lifestyles" that only exist on TV, and the United States has almost managed to trade away the ordinary pleasures of human existence for the pig-paradise of unlimited consumerism.

If we somehow draw back from the brink of economic and environmental disasters, and somehow pass along the extraordinary privilege of living an ordinary human life to the next generation, it won't be because flatter-the-mob populists like Arianna Huffington have conjured up dreams of reality-show superheroes...

It will be because extraordinary leaders like Winston Churchill have inspired ordinary people to make the ordinary sacrifices of ordinary human existence for the common good.

"Blood, sweat, toil, and tears..." There's nothing extraordinary about any of it.

Is this an advertisement or a criticism?

I wouldn't have known about Ms. Huffington's book had you not told me.  I'll check it out.

Huffington is a two-face (2.00 / 2)

I can still remember how she was pushing conservative agendas, with her husband here in California years ago. Then she flipped sides when it proved more financially prudent.

The religion of common sense? (2.00 / 1)

That's okay, I want nothing to do with Huffington the fake.  How anyone progressive can support that slimeball is beyond me.

Lame. (1.00 / 4)

Why, because she backed Obama?  Get over it.  Huffington Post is one of the most progressive blogs around.  For the past decade Huffington has been one of the loudest voices opposing the Bush administration, and in particular the war in Iraq.

Hurt feelings are a bad basis for political ideology.

Can you read?????????????? (2.00 / 2)

I haven't liked Huffington the fake since her husband ran for governor out here in California and trashed progressives.

My political life didn't begin with the 08' primaries.

Re: Huffington is a two-face (2.00 / 3)

Yeah, I used to watch her sit on Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect" and reel off the Republican talking points non-stop.   When I discovered she'd changed sides because her Rethug hubby turned out to be gay, my reaction was, "So you never actually believed ANY of that crap you spewed non-stop for years? How am I supposed to believe anything you say now?"

So I don't read HuffPo.

Re: Huffington is a two-face (none / 0)

I was highly suspicious of her for quite a while for just that reason (as I'm highly suspicious of Andrew Sullivan's Obama advocacy now). But since she came to the light, she's proven herself as a true progressive.

I understand that Clinton supporters are upset with her because she backed Obama, but that doesn't make her less progressive.

And remember that the story of Obama's bitter comment--one of the biggest "scandals" of the primary was--broken by one of HuffPo's own.

Finally, keep in mind that Media Matters, one of the most essential tools we have against wingnut media, is also run by a converted republican. People can change.

Re: Huffington is a two-face (none / 0)

Sadly, I'm sure the Right used to think she had proved herself a "true conservative".

My dislike and distrust of her goes way back before Obama/Clinton When I say I don't read HuffPo I mean EVER. Not just recently.

If her "conversion" were more gradual I'd be more inclined to believe it wasn't just political expediency at work.  At it is, she just swapped one day, presto, snap, like that.  How exactly does that work when one is already an adult? I could see it happening to a teenager new to the political scene, but not to someone who must have spent hours and hours justifying the Neocon policies so she could get up on national television and spew out their garbage convincingly.

So now she spews stuff that the left likes better. But I don't think she actually believes a word of it. I'm not clear she believes in anything.

I only trust converted Republicans to do whatever is in their best financial interest.  Why do none of them become moderate? Because there's no money in being moderate, that's why. Only the extremes make money. They sniff the wind, see that the Rethugs are on their way out (deservedly) and swing like a weathervane.

I really don't think he cares what we have to say. I doubt he even comes back to check.

this is brilliant:

It's easy to lose the extraordinary privilege of leading an ordinary life by chasing "lifestyles" that only exist on TV, and the United States has almost managed to trade away the ordinary pleasures of human existence for the pig-paradise of unlimited consumerism..."

this is RIDICULOUS:

so Winnie will save us!
