My prediction: Bam throws Jim 'Sub-prime' Johnson under the bus

To those who worry about the possibility of Jim Johnson, one of Obama's VP vetters, hurting Obama's image: you should relax.

If history is an indicator, Obama will place Johnson in the same spot he reserved for Jimmy Carter, Jeremiah Wright, and Father Pfleger: under a bus.

Today's Washington Post's story examining Johnson's dealings with Fanny Mae will be the last straw. You heard it from me first. Obama cannot stand continuous bad press, if it takes distancing himself from friends and partners.

Chill out. Obama will be fine. Johnson will soon be asked to give up his duty as VP vetter.

Ridiculous (2.00 / 2)

I'd be disappointed if he did.  He can't bow to every made-up controversy.

Re: Ridiculous (none / 0)

This seems to be the theme: attack his associations.  Pick four or five, and you can say things like "will he throw yet ANOTHER person under the bus?" when I can't really think of anyone he's actually done that to.

When I first heard about this story I laughed and said "only an idiot would try to tar him based on one of three members of his vice-presidential exploratory committee", but there it is.

KB, how many McPoints are you up to?

Re: My prediction: Obama throws (none / 0)

Quite possibly but the effect will be to make him look weak or lacking in judgement. And indeed it does raise some questions about his judgement. This doesn't seem to bother you, just so long as there are plenty of buses around.

Dogwhistle: (n) dawg-whis-l (2.00 / 2)

"A word or phrase designed and used by trolls to perk-up the ears of those sensitive to a negative meme."

Usage in a sentence:

"It is easy to tell that the diarist is a Troll because s/he uses the dogwhistle 'throw under a bus' to obliquely say 'Obama is a self-centered immoral asschap who will betray anyone to achieve his evil ends'".

That better?

Re: Rawhide (none / 0)

The conspiracy theorists are trying too hard.
When I tgyped "Obama", the diary title was truncated in the main page. I then tried "Bam" to make it more compact, although it was still too long, as you can see. Then I said, what the heck, and gave up.

By the way, Bam is short for Obama, not "bambi". You are very creative, though.

You are playing dumb, because you KNOW that Obama has been many times referred to as "Bam".

Even the NY Times spoke about Obama's nickname "Bam", in this article:

Times have clearly changed for him, as they have for other candidates. Consider Senator Barack Obama. "Obama" may not be the longest name ever, but it can still give tabloid headline writers fits. The News met the challenge with "Bam."

Some may refer to such measures as "weak sauce."

But the MSM is getting fairer (2.00 / 3)

More evidence that the media honeymoon is over -- Washington Post columnist (on economics) Robert Samuelson --

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con tent/article/2008/06/10/AR2008061002528. html

But Obama's clever campaign strategy would put him in a bind as president. Championing centrism would disappoint many ardent Democrats. Pleasing them would betray his conciliating image. The fact that he has so far straddled the contradiction may confirm his political skills and the quiet aid received from the media, which helped him by virtually ignoring the blatant contradictions.

And what does the straddle tell us of him? Aside from ambition -- hardly unique among presidential candidates -- I cannot detect powerful convictions in Obama. He seems merely expedient in peddling his convenient conflicts.

Keep posting what you think, and don't bow to those who want to silence you

This is a democracy

People unfamiliar with the writings of Erich Fromm need to read him.  There's a synopsis of his most important work here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_from _Freedom

Escaping Freedom

As `freedom from' is not an experience we enjoy in itself, Fromm suggests that many people, rather than utilising it successfully, attempt to minimise its negative effects by developing thoughts and behaviours that provide some form of security. These are as follows:

  1. Authoritarianism: Fromm characterises the authoritarian personality as containing a sadist element and a masochist element. The authoritarian wishes to gain control over other people in a bid to impose some kind of order on the world, they also wish to submit to the control of some superior force which may come in the guise of a person or an abstract idea.
   2. Destructiveness: Although this bears a similarity to sadism, Fromm argues that the sadist wishes to gain control over something. A destructive personality wishes to destroy something it cannot bring under its control.
   3. Conformity: This process is seen when people unconsciously incorporate the normative beliefs and thought processes of their society and experience them as their own. This allows them to avoid genuine free thinking, which is likely to be anxiety provoking.

Don't let others impose their will, or their need to control, on you.

Re: My prediction: Bam throws Jim 'Sub-prime' (none / 0)

Dan Balz of the Washington Post says today:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail /2008/06/11/obama_defense_of_johnson_rai se.html?hpid=topnews

The most important decision Barack Obama will make between now and the November election is the selection of a vice presidential running mate. That makes all the more remarkable his effort Tuesday to suggest that the people he has put in charge of helping make the decision are somehow not really part of his campaign.

[skip]

At a news conference in St. Louis yesterday, Obama was asked about Johnson and the fact that the candidate has often criticized the activities of Countrywide. Rather than defend his choice, he sought to suggest that the role Johnson is playing is only tangential to his campaign and that it is impossible for the campaign to vet the vetters.

[skip]

All of this will be sorted out in the days ahead. But in the meantime, for Obama to suggest that Johnson is floating in some outer orbit of his campaign raises questions about the candidate's willingness to deal forthrightly with controversy. [skip]

There are many ways Obama and his team could be responding to this, but they are doing what they've done in the past when turbulence hits, which is to hunker down, stick to their talking points and wait for the storm to pass, which it often has.

[skip]

It isn't clear whether the uproar over Johnson is a passing storm or a more serious problem for the Obama campaign. For now, the campaign has decided to treat it as a minor annoyance that will soon disappear. But the candidate's response has raised questions about the candidate himself that could well linger past the moment.

Yep, Obama is corrupt, and only the blind cannot see it.
